Not exactly. Pipe bombs are pretty "common" in the US, at least a couple a year.
 
There's apparently a set of photos going around that shows a guy with a black backpack then the next photo showing him leaving the scene without a backpack, does anyone know what photos these are? I cannot find them but they're being referenced and talked about on other forums.
 
An IED is not ubiquitous with the Middle East. Prior to their most recent change in name, road side bombs were used all around the world.

They feature simple designs that anyone with a desire to learn can find in 15 minutes on Google.

Is there a post where someone posted any new updates for today? I was at school forever and haven't heard any new news or updates since yesterday evening.

There are two sets of photos going around, that I have seen, showing two different people with backpacks/duffle bags but I'm hesitant to post them because they are almost certainly bullshit and it'll probably just end up with some innocent guy getting accused.

Only new thing is that the bombs used pressure cookers and were placed in black duffle bags.

Explosive type used makes this more likely to be a domestic. The international terrorists are generally well funded and bring fairly sophisticated and power explosives to their targets. My current expectation is that this is a domestic operation.

Why build all these small bombs. If all 5 went off, I think there would still be more maimed than killed. Seems like they could have made 2 gigantic bombs with the material. Or 1 big one.

That's why I side with it being a message. Not after body counts...

There were only ever two bombs. The other reports were all false alarms.

The fact that no one has claimed responsibility seems to indicate domestic as well. Wackos want anonymity. Foreign terrorists would want to accompany this with some kind of message, otherwise, what's the point?

On tax day. I somehow think that is the detail that in the end is going to be the 'driver'. I really hate speculating but I've been thinking about this a lot and it's part of human nature to try and find a explanation for the unexplainable.

Eh, I don't think the bombs were necessarily designed to target legs. They were just designed to cause damage. Pressure cooker with ball bearings. The bag of course had to be placed on the ground anyway.

This, not to mention that the guy on the wheelchair that lost his legs wasn't a runner but an spectator that had his girlfriend running.

Yeah, I'm in the same boat. International terrorists would have claimed it by now I would think in order to push whatever goals they have.

This sounds domestic and planned out by one person maybe a few at most. Two bombs, likely on timers (no confirmation), in black bags. Target was the audience, potentially the racers (if the explosion had been bigger- it may have caused people to run back and be hit by 2nd explosion as the distance would appear safe to someone). And the purpose was to do damage and cause a lot of violence if not deaths.

I honestly have a bad feeling that this isn't the last target in their mind(s) either. It doesn't sit me with right and feels like someone or a couple people who were seeing what kind of damage they could do and then go for more the next time. Truly hoping the FBI analyzes the data fast before whoever did this either disappears or comes back with something worse.

1 bomb in one place does less collateral damage than 2 bombs in two different places (or 5, in your earlier example).

It's just common sense.

Plus, if you take into account the process of making a bomb, creating one on a larger scale may make it less reliable.
 
I think people need to be careful about saying that international groups would have claimed this immediately. It took til 2004 for OBL to claim responsibility, and even then he wasn't believed by some (who argued that he was merely ideological support and not direct planning) who viewed the claim as opportunistic.

I think it's too early to tell if this was meant to kill a lot of people or not. It could just be some psycho who didn't know much about what he was doing.
