Bombs detonated at Boston Marathon finish line

How common is it for somebody to do this sort of thing as a one off? How you could do something like this and return to a normal way of life is beyond me.

So...on CNN's "What We Know" page:

-- An injured Saudi student who was questioned after the bombing was a spectator at the race and was running away from the scene because of his injury, another U.S. official told CNN. The student was interviewed by authorities "but it came up empty. He was just in the wrong place at the wrong time."

Wrong place at the wrong time? Why did they suspect him?

I know Ricin is a particularly vicious poison, but how hard is it to get ahold of?

Apparently he was suspect because he was a brown skinned person running from an explosion. From what I recall, random people tackled him and took him to the police.

Edit: So, because of that, they had to investigate him.

Look a brown man running away from an explosion!! ::TACKLE::

He should sue those idiots.

In this picture you can see the second bomb detonating close to the road rather than back near the buildings. That picture with the bag could indeed be the bomb.

An envelope that tested positive for the deadly poison ricin was intercepted Tuesday afternoon at the U.S. Capitol's off-site mail facility in Washington, congressional and law enforcement sources tell CNN.

After the envelope tested positive in a first routine test, it was retested two more times, each time coming up positive, the law enforcement source said. The package was then sent to a Maryland lab for further testing.

The envelope was addressed to a U.S. senator, though the sources would not say which one.

Wolf would now like the picture blown up or expanded "to see if it is infact a black nylon bag". It might be the bomb, but I can tell you it isn't black Wolf

My guess would be paranoid "witness" testimony to him acting suspicious. So, racism.

I could make a few guesses, but it would only take one...

He's brown.

Right. It just seems like the elephant in the room. I wonder if anything will come of it. Probably not, since the dude let them search his apartment.

If that bag on the runners side of the barricades was the second bomb then it's only a matter of time before a picture or video of the guy shows up. The placement of that one is so blatant though that if it is the bomb then it was probably planted second as the guy moved back from the finish line.

I don't really understand why CNN is trying so hard to push the old runner that fell as a hero. When they interviewed him yesterday he basically just said he fell, someone helped him up and he finished the race, checked his time and went home feeling good. He didn't seem to really be aware or care that there was a bombing. I'm not bashing him or anything, but there are much more inspirational stories they could push

Media should focus more on Carlos. That dude is a real fucking hero.

IIRC it's not particularly hard to make.

The instructions on how to make pressure cooker bombs and ricin are both on the Internet. Both are tricky, but relatively straightforward to make. The problem is that both would be viable methods of international sleepers, militia type nutbags, false flag conspirators, random assholes, copycats, you name it. I think our best hope is the recovered materials and the wealth of video footage - and despite the very real danger of Internet vigilantism, the sheer weight of 'decryption' available from the public nowadays may actually help

A tiny dose can kill someone if it's inhaled. I'm not sure how that compares to anthrax.

Anthrax is a bacteria that can easily be inhaled. Previous Anthrax letters have contained a white powder infected with the bacteria that is easily made airborne upon opening the envelopes. It's highly lethal and only some strains respond to anti-biotics.

Ricin is a naturally occuring poison. It's highly toxic. A dose of less than a drop is more than enough to kill an adult human. However, it's most effective when injected or inhaled. Ingestion is significanly less dangerous and requires a larger dose to reach lethal levels of toxicity. I assume that the letters were coated in ricin in the hopes that they would be handled and then the handlers would eventually ingest some when eating lunch.
