Bonus round: TGS highlights

I hate that there are so many pure dumbasses representing gamers on these heavy traffic shows and such. I still haven't seen a show where the people talking connect with my own opinion on a majority of things.

Not connecting with your opinion = Being a dumbass? Or am i misreading that?

The big sites are losing a lot of traffic to youtubers if that helps you. GT especially seems to be in trouble.

Shane opinions always pissed me off but hot damn i miss the guy, it was always entertaining to watch with the kind of pace he gives . also i miss marcus, good stuff i hope they invite them more often

GT needs to do something about the way that new set is lit, it just looks completely lifeless with all that grey in the background.

Oh, they're going to bitch about Quiet? I'm done watching.

I also found it funny that none of these game journalists bothered to go to what I assume is still probably the biggest gaming event in Japan.

Yeah. I was going to say the same thing actually.

He always kept Invisible Walls flowing. He is good at keeping a conversation interesting.

To be fair, TGS the last few years has been mostly mobile games (and still is). This year caught everyone off guard I think.

After the last couple of years I don't blame them.

I don't get why everybody's jumping on them for their Quiet criticisms, I mean I'm a huge MGS fan and I think Quiet's appearance seems just kind of scummy to me and I know Kojima says their is apparently a reason for it but it had better be a good one for it not to come off as tone deaf fan service.

Wasn't her invisiblity power the reason?

Either way I really disliked the "why aren't they doing everything like we do in the west?!" attitude. I'll be sure to never visit whatever site Shane launches.

Yeah I did find that weird. I guess they don't realize that many Japanese devs/publishers have been trying to do things like in the West (e.g. Resident Evil 6) and as a result they've suffered. There's a certain appeal that Japanese games have that they don't get it seems.

I dont how that could be it, at least could be it in a logical way. When she goes invisible, her clothes goes invisible too.
So that way it would make more sense having a skin tight suit than having a bikini top and torn up tights that have the panties (or whatever those are called) on the outside.

After the last couple of years I don't blame them.

Probably, but the reality is also that the western press appear to be largely ignorant of the new gaming scene in Japan just because it no longer aligns with the western preference of consoles.

How many of them would be aware of Youkai Watch and how massively big it is in Japan?

I believe it's related to her weakness whatever that is.

And this is why I really never liked Shane.

I think we could have a serious discussion in the industry about women in games and what Quiet will mean (and if there is a reason for her to dress the way she does), I personally was shocked with what happens to a certain character in Ground Zeroes and Kojima's certainly seeming to go much darker then he ever has before with that so my gut is telling me there is a reason and its not just T&A and if thats not the case then yes lets all bitch about it then but until the happens don't condemn the entire game for what is likely a troll, this is freaking Kojima after all, the guy who altered trailers to hide the fact you played as Raiden for a majority of MGS2, the guy who created a boss fight largely to break the fourth wall and mess with what the player views as a normal boss fight, it goes against EVERYTHING hes ever done to make a character like this, have her dress the way she does and not have it mean something. Again, I think this (positive or negative) could largely be a great talking point and something to have a proper conversation on...

But instead Shane and the others would rather bring up whats going on currently in the west and assume that the rest of the world is paying attention to gamergate and everything else.

Then you have the whole FF thing, if he doesn't like it fine but what is so bizarre about this premise for a story then any other previous FF game? All FF games have ridiculous stories to them that's what makes them so interesting to begin with, in FF7 you start out as a terrorist blowing up a huge factory, in FF9 you play as a guy with a tail who (along with his theater group) kidnap a Princess, in FFX you play a huge sports star who is transported across time and space to a place where the ultimate evil is 'Sin' the embodiment of the evil in man...

And a road trip to save a kingdom is too out there?

I think Shane is far to jaded and has his beliefs in the industry so outdated (this is the guy who claimed the game that sells the best should get GOTY) that he really just isn't worth listening to which is why I fully intend to not check out what site hes working on, I don't believe he was ever THAT well liked on GT (hell look at his Skyward Sword review on game trailers, he gave it a 9+ but the ENTIRE review is bashing the game for 9+ minutes, its freaking horrible, if you don't like the game fine but don't spend the entire time bashing the game and still give it a 9, that doesn't make any damn sense!).

I believe it's related to her weakness whatever that is.

I also read somewhere that she needs to
absorb sunlight
for her powers to work. That would explain it. I guess we'll find out when the game comes out.

It's obviously mainly just fan service and I'm not really sure why such a big deal is made out of it.

Do they talk about anything about MGS5 other than Quiet? I mean hell, they could of talked about Kiefer's role as Big Boss now and what impact it has. Or the fact that there was a 20 minute demo of the game. Seems like a bad watch so I'm just going to ignore it.

I hate jumping on the Quiet discussion, and we ultimately do need to look at the character from the fullest perspective, but we also need to realise that just because something makes sense doesn't also make it the only option to do something like that.

The Boss has no need to open her zippers and show her scars to Big Boss prior to the fight, but Kojima did anyway. Eva made sense as a character with how she looked, but there's been similar characters in other fiction that doesn't dress as blatantly as Eva.

I'm confident Quiet's looks will be justified with sufficient degrees of MGS world rationale. But at the same time, I highly doubt it's to the extent where she couldn't have worn a sports bra as an alternative.

I just lean back and acknowledge that Kojima is a great visionary who is also eccentric and perverted, and frankly, I would not have it any other way.

I don't know who the middle guy is, but he is like the Dementor of fun from this video, just sucking it dry whenever there is a hint of it...

EDIT: Oh and Annoyed Gamer bringing women equality into it... I'm glad political correctness has jumped into gaming as well, because it wasn't already overblown enough in the media. Yay.

There's a strong whiff of racism across much of the english based gaming media.

I'm gonna have to call bullshit on this comment. Maybe you could say that Western media is harsh against Japanese games, but to suggest that there's racism is going too far. I personally hate most Japanese games, and find anime creepy as hell. But I respect their culture; there's nothing wrong with it being much different than the West.

I really can't believe that Shane brought up the "Quiet sitting with her legs spread" bullshit. That's an actual sniping position. Even if you're prone your legs are going to be spread. And it's not like her legs are spread apart, she has one propped up for stability and the other flat on the ground.

Anyway, this was less about TGS and more about "Let's talk about FF, MGS, and Silent Hills".

To be fair while his specific point may have been off the commentary that quiet is ridiculously sexualized is fair. It's fan service and kind of creepy, but par for mgs games.

FFXV has one of the most grounded story premise and direction in the entire Final Fantasy franchise, along with FFXII.

This Shane guy is full of shit.

At the MGS5 discussion now, Shane talks a lot, but he doesn't really say all that much.

It's cute that they think Quiet will be the most controversial aspect of the game, though. There's definitely going to be way more controversial stuff happening in the game than whatever is up with her design or her back story.

Also his weird argument about the characters being inspired by western boy bands like One Direction... it's not like Japan (or Asia in general) doesn't have their own boy bands looking more or less like that.
And road trips are popular in the west? Erm, they're a narrative trope popular everywhere, because it's the basic premise behind the freedom of adventuring and journeying.

Not everything has to revolve around the west.

The funny thing is One Direction was created specifically with the way Japanese boy bands are created, in mind.

They were sculpted a certain way and marketed heavily here in Japan where they are finding quite a bit of fame.

The delivery changes but the tricks remain the same.

Since it's irrelevant to the rest of the world, I'm not sure it matters, to be honest. The media in question is western, after all.

The commentary in the video, in the comments on GT, and frankly here at NeoGAF is sad.

People complaining about discussions of sexism are disgusting. People trying to pretend that its racist to recognize that Japanese culture is particularly bad about gender politics, are also pretty disgusting.

It is annoying to have a bunch of guys talking out of their asses about subjects that they clearly don't understand or even care about. But then, that is how I feel when people on GAF talk about how they are sick of feminism getting in the way of their video games.

If they think Quiet is controversial, I wonder how they feel about the use of child soldiers.

Unless a news outlet like Fox News picks up on it, I doubt the gaming community will even raise an eyebrow at the use of child soldiers.

Even if we can play as them, kill as them or even kill them directly, it just won't create much long term discussion.

Quiet's outfit on the other hand will be talked about at great length even long after the game has come out.

i think Quiet's design is absolutely silly, and i think we will have plenty of occasions to point that out, once the game is out (since it will surely be mentioned in many reviews and discussed in plenty of threads on here) so in that sense, i really don't have a problem with shitting on the character's design and criticizing Kojima for it.
They do bring up some dumb points though, for example the "legs spread position" which is just how you would snipe if you had to sit down, and has nothing to do with sexual innuendos; i didn't have problems with that part however, as you reap what you sow, and Kojima probably did it exactly for that reason, to sell more Quiet toys and have the game be at the center of the public attention as much as possible.

And then the whole FFXV segment, which is werdly egocentric, thinking every design decision was made to appeal to westerners, when really, as i pointed out, everybody loves "roadtrip" tropes, and everybody has their own boybands, Japan especially.

So that was pretty cringeworthy.

Also, calling the game "cheesy"... well i'm having a REALLY hard time coming up with one videogame that isn't.
Even stuff like The Last of Us, skirts that line very very often.

Agreed, but if anything I'd say GT as a whole is bad for this.

Case in point, reviews for Perfect Dark Zero, GRAW 1, recently Destiny and the hypocrisy of "goty must be original" and it was MW2. Lastly, Satterfield, as shown here, tries to just shout people down who disagrees with him; watch the IW episode were they discuss RE6, only Marcus argues with him and everyone else is beaten to submission verbally.

So you are telling me that The Boss showing hers scar those 5 seconds is a way of sexualizing her?
Kojima always has been absolutely fair in giving fanservice to anyone regardless of your sexual tastes and he also has proven to be able to create strong women, Quiet is no more than Kaz in his speedo in PW... the same as Paz and Big Boss in his speedo always in PW, do we want to talk about Raiden who was targeted directly to fujoshi? Vamp most of the time shirtless with the knife put in that specific spot and Naomi? Did you know that you can play in a speedo for the entire game in PW and shirtless in MGS3?
Hell even Meryl which is essentially "the mc girl" trope in the first Solid game is a totally better and stronger character in MGS4 even physically and never sexualized. Also Olga was made so badass to
replace Gray Fox.
And The Boss? Is the strong woman character for antonomasia.

Sincerely bitching about Quiet design only shows that you (not you in particular but directed towards Bonus Round) know pretty much nothing about the MGS series and Kojima.
