But I can't because nobody would come and watch me.

Appreciate all that, and I understand, but I was being facetious, as the rest of my post went on to describe how my thought process ended up. I should have been a little more clear.

I am. You know, fuck it. I'll admit it. I'm jealous of PewDiePie.

First off the guy is rich beyond his wildest dreams and he got that way by doing something he loves. Seriously.

His life is very likely to be quite exceptional too. When this whole youtube thing is over and its all forgotten he'll have more freedom and money than he'll know what to do with.

But beyond that, he really isnt a bad guy. The guy he plays 'on tv' isnt the guy he really is, for sure. All it takes is for you to watch some of his more personal videos to know that.

Me and Pewds made different career choices. He found something that worked and BECAME it. I found the francis/rage thing and used it but decided that wasnt all I was going to be.

Pewds is rewarded with what he wants. Fame, money, power.

I'm rewarded with what I wanted. Some fame, some money, and a lot of peace of mind.

I wish I was the number 1 person on youtube for doing what I love. Instead I'm like number 400 or so. I'll take it, but I'd be lying if I didnt admit I wished I was number 1... though I clearly wouldnt be able to pay the price Pewds did.
 
I have no problem with people using youtube as their primary source of income and I accept that it can be considered a real job (i.e. the person is self-employed).

That said, when you are self-employed in ANY job or start-up venture you are taking on a certain degree of economic risk that you wouldn’t be exposed to in a “traditional job” (for lack of a better term).

If the people who quit their previous jobs to make a living off youtube are actually successful in doing so I think that’s great and that those people have earned every dollar they get. However, in my view youtube implementing major policy changes is an ordinary risk of doing business for someone who makes his or her living off youtube.

I’m not necessarily saying that I agree with what youtube has done, but when you use their site you play by their rules, and when their rules can adversely affect your income that’s a risk you take. It sucks that people are losing money, but I don’t view any of this as some major injustice.

You obviously haven't been paying attention, people do cry when the studio they love gets closed. They don't give a bloody damn when something useless like THQ gets closed because it's something that's inevitable. Similarly there are good youtube commentators who are basically doing everything your IGN, Gamespot, etc is already doing but in a different format and I fail to see how their job is any less real than the job of a conventional games journalist.

As TB said with Sessler yesterday: PewDiePie can get 4 million people watching him play a shitty online quiz. 4 million people! You think people are watching for the quiz? Of course not. Developers and publishers can either opt in or opt out, but PewDiePie is getting his views regardless and the intelligent publishers will want to get in on the action.

Of course PewDiePie is an extreme example. There are thousands of other youtubers who do more "mature", intelligent content for which the above statement holds just as true.

He's only made something like $1.5m off his youtube views. That's hardly a dent on being rich in our 1% world.

And that's one of the top earners on Youtube. So the pay isn't amazing, and as mentioned on a lot of these videos, these are 1 person doing the work that studios do in entertainment so they're having to spend 60-80 hours a week.

I think what you'll see is enough publisher pressure (because their consumers are pushing them and they don't look good in this right now) to ensure their content isn't causing content id's or they are quickly removed, and the muting / removal / replacement of music within gameplay reviews or let's play (extra editing effort required).

I don't think Nintendo and Square Enix will budge. They seem like real assholes in this.

we're never supposed to talk about how much we make at youtube but he's got 3 billion views. at a very conservative 2.00 per 1000 cpm that's a lot more than 1.5mil. But even at 1.5 million by the age of 2X or whatever he is, that'd be a hell of an accomplishment.

But I agree entirely that 60-80 hour weeks alone is miserable. I've been doing it for so long now though it just feels normal to me.

I know it's all cool to act like 1.5 million dollars is just NOT enough money in this day and age...but c'mon...the pay isn't amazing?
 
I hope it works out for these guys because I can only imagine that what they do on YouTube has become a huge part of their lives, not to mention there are a bunch of people who enjoy watching them (I don't care if pewdiepie never makes another dime on a video though).

But from an economic standpoint...I still can't really see this as a person losing their job. I do wish them the best though.

I may be wrong but I see this as an opportunity to make more money and have better branding.

Speaking in general here, if your opinion is as valued as your views may suggest then why not write up reviews as well, host them on your own site, and make ad sense that way? YouTbers relay WAY too much on YT.com which is why this change is hurting them so much.

Will it be a tougher road? Sure, but don't act like it's impossible. Your golden goose died, now adapt and survive.

That's just the stat I got with a google search, but even if it's a bit more, how much does he earn out of that? Does he employ staff he needs to pay? A lot of the big youtube acts have employees that need to manage that editing, marketing, legal, etc.

Anyways, total aside point. The real point is if that's the absolute top earner, you know the rest aren't making enough to handle these kind of situations and it requires a lot of work. So not something to be jealous of or to be mad about. They are doing something they love, but it's a lot of work and isn't a huge amount of money.

My parents combined make 120k a year, and that's a lot of money. And pewdiepie has made 1.5 mil + in like what? 2 years? And that's not a lot of money to you? lol.

But honestly, to me peace of mind is more important than anything, I think. In the end, feeling good about yourself is what really matters. It sounds cliche but money only matters enough to be able to live the life you want comfortably, anything more than that is really icing.

I'll have to look this up, but there was a recent study that suggested a limit to the connection between money and happiness. At a certain point (which could vary for all people, but there was an absolute limit), the amount of money earned could no longer help an individual in his or her attempt to be fulfilled. Ultimately, they concluded exactly what you just said - happiness and a clear conscience were infinitely more important.

I am. The guy makes AT LEAST 15x more a year than I do. And I problem solve and write code 8 hours a day (at least). While I do love it, it's never easy work. And can be rather exhausting.

I'd LOVE to make the kind of money he does by making youtube videos. In 1 month, my college loans would be completely paid off! In a few more, my house...

But I could never do it. I just don't have the kind of personality that would attract enough viewers (in any age demographic).

But at the same time, I don't want to pull the rug out from under him or wish he couldn't do it anymore. Good on him. If you find him silly or dislike him, it's mostly because his humor is intended for an audience much younger than you are. He found himself a winning formula. And I'm sure he's a pretty nice guy when he's not on youtube (though I really have no idea).
 
To the assholes that say "get a real job", you're fucking idiots. Go work a job that drains your soul for years, and tell me how that is better.
I'm so jealous of many of these guys, and love them because they took risks I am too scared to take. That's braver than many.

This YouTube thing is more of a job than mine. Salute to the people who took the chance in the firsts place; there's no way in hell I'd do something that ballsy.

I really really really hope speedrunning and walkthroughs find their way through this crap.

People who lack empathy have a hard time understanding what it is. No need to explain your emotions that most people on this forum have no problem understanding.

I hope people like Angry Joe come out of this okay. Its obvious Joe and some other youtube personalities put plenty of time and love into their craft. Sometimes I wonder how much someone like Joe makes and really hoped he was making bank, because people like him are one of the best examples of working hard and being successful. People like Joe take risks, poor their heart in soul into something they love, aren't lazy, and have crazy amounts of ambition. Anyone who revels in their pain is a totally clueless asshole and probably lacks everyone of the qualities I listed.

I feel like filming, editing, and all around producing your own "show" is a "real job". Just because the medium is on YouTube doesn't make it any different than a show being on TV. Sure some people just sit around and talk or do lets plays, but there are some out there that actually put in a lot of effort. Angry Joe comes to mind. He seems like he genuinely cares about his audience and tries to produce a good show for them.

The whole YouTube thing is a shame. I'm still getting ID flags on videos I uploaded 5-7 years ago on my old account. Its pretty ridiculous

Sure, lots of people are very jealous of him. He makes a shit ton of money making Youtube videos of himself playing video games, every day. What gamer wouldn't be jealous of that? Honestly if I had his income I'd retire in a year and simply enjoy life. He won the lottery, who doesn't want to win the lottery?
 
Well said, Boogie. I don't make videos for a living myself, but I spend a lot of time watching people on YouTube play games and talk about shit. Now this is all changing because Google has seemingly lost their minds. Shame. I really hope this all fixes itself fast. It's going to hurt a lot of good people. :-(


Side note unrelated, but why the heck did YouTube show me a SPANISH commercial for Tide before the video? What would even trigger that? I've never gotten a Spanish commercial before. What the heck changed? So confusing. Thanks, YouTube.
 
Is it bad that i really never paid any attention to this situation until i watched Boogie's video?

I honestly didn't realise it was as bad as people literally losing out on money, i thought it was just Youtube's system being a bit crappy.

Who is going to be hurt by this the most? Is it only the Let's Play guys? Or is it going to be 99% of the gaming channels out there?

I'm going to agree that some of the comments out there have really been insensitive. I know a lot of people take the view that they can and should say whatever they think, regardless of the consequences, but I think the world would be a lot better off if more people stopped and thought about how thier words might affect others, before speaking.

Anyways spot on. I know someone that makes YouTube vids for a living and while it's not about gaming, he puts in around 60 hours a week just to bring everything together. If that's not work, then I don't know what is.

The bigger and bigger he gets the more money he will make. There's a site called socialblade which shows stats for youtubers and while it's not very accurate I could make a pretty decent estimate of how much he makes per month using my own personal statistics in regards to the videos I make. Needless to say it's a lot more than 1.5 million a year.
