Hey everybody, I have returned from my month-long sabbatical to the Dominican Republic. I'm going to try posting pictures from 20megsfree.com, but if it doesn't work, maybe someone would be so kind as to lend some webspace for me to use.

Anyway, the trip was amazing. For the first two weeks we were working on digging a trench to a village so that we could lay a pipeline to get a clean water supply to the village so that they wouldn't have to get their water from the nearby river. We completed the trench and laid most of the pipe, it's now just up to a contractor to complete the water system later in the summer.

The second two weeks were more of a vacation, with us travelling throughout the country and seeing some amazing sights.

edit: Okay pics no worky. Nuts.

Trying again, with another lame free service.

Here's a picture of the hut our group stayed in while at the work project:

Actually, only the girls in our group got to sleep in the hut. The four guys in our group had to
sleep in this shack 50 metres down the road:

Here's a pic of me and a local named Kelvin. He was a really cool guy who hung out with us and helped us work every day. He also had an interest in martial arts and boxing, so even if we couldn't understand a thing we said to each other, we still managed something in common:

I thought pretty much the same thing that morning. It was such an awe-inspiring view that I almost couldn't believe my eyes.

The beauty of the country was in stark contrast to the all-inclusive resort we went to for the last two nights just outside the capital. It was so touristy and artificial in comparison with everything else we had experienced.

Those are some beautiful shots you took, Boogie. Ever dabble in photography? Also, what kind of camera do you use?

By the way, welcome back dude.

Last time I was there was in August of 2002 to visit family. My father and grandmother are heading there this Tuesday. I love going there; it's a nice to spend time there and away from NYC for a while...

What part of the country were you in?

Did you lay some other kind of pipe? ;)

Oddly enough my parents just booked their vacations to get over there. They are originally from the island, but have been living here for 22 years now.

I'm thinking about getting out there for labor day weekend, but with student loan bills coming in soon, I'm a bit hesitant.

This is like a scene out of Ippo where Miyata goes to Indonesia or whatever and has the one local supporter. :D

Naw, I've never really been into photography before, but I really did enjoy taking these pictures. The camera is a Sony Cyber-shot U, DSC U60. 2.0 megapixels, and underwater-capable.

Thanks Oli, that's high praise indeed. I'll hunt up the higher res versions of those pictures in a few minutes.

We were all over the island. The first two weeks were spent up in the mountains in the northern part of the island, about a half hour to 45 minute drive from the north coast. From there we moved around a lot. We spent three nights in Cabarete, on the north coast, two or three nights in Monte Cristi , a few nights in Jarabacoa, and then a few nights near Barahona on the south coast.

We also took a day trip to Lago Enriquillo, and ended our trip in a resort in Juan Dolio about 45 minutes outside of Santo Domingo.

And no, I'm afraid I remained too much my "straight and narrow" self to do any experimenting.

Wow. I just picked up a Sony Cybershot DSC-100 at 5 Megapixels, and none of my shots look as beautiful as yours. I guess it's all in the lighting. Great shots man. If you have any more, please feel free to post them. I love seeing other people's travel pics.

That Kelvin dude looks insanely familiar. Only thing throwing him off from being who I think he is is that you mentioned you two could not communicate. Did he ever come to the US, specifically to the Bronx...?

Does cocky&funny actually work in the Domnican Republic?

In regards to the 3 cases I observed, there was funny, but not particularly much cocky.

As far as the locals were concerned, their idea of trying to woo the women of our group consisted of letting the girls know that they had a hard-on while they were dancing with them. Real classy guys :p

Alas, no, there was a remarkable absence of evil warlords and drug lords. Though I did play the role of private bouncer for our group when some guys at the dance clubs tried to get a little too frisky with the girls in our group.
