Books based on video games

I know a video game based on a novel (not directly though):

If you're into sci-fi, you should definitely give these a read. It's a series even non-Halo sci-fi fans will enjoy. The first one reminded me a lot of the Ringworld series: can't wait to see how Primordium delivers.

If you gave Cryptum to someone who has never heard of Halo, they will think its a great novel. Seriously you should read it.
I read Eon and Eternity a few years back and remember liking them quite a bit, so maybe I'll give the Forerunner trilogy a try.

A lot of the WarCraft novels, especially the ones by Richard A. Knaak, are quite good. I find the Aspects to be very fascinating.

Doesn't the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. series have like 60 books written about it?
I am pretty sure it is the other way around: the games were based on a series of Russian books. And I think Metro 2033 is based on the same series of books or at least books by the same author.

My mom enjoyed the Myst books. I never read them personally but I remember the covers looking cool at least.

The only video game books I read were the Mario "choose your own adventure" books and a Sonic book that involved a rabbit getting turned into a robot. I remember enjoying them at the time but then revisiting them in middle school and thinking they were terrible. Pretty much turned me off to video game books in general, but once I beat ICO I might give the Ico book a chance.

BAM! kinda slow start, but its awesome
What the hell? I had no idea Bioshock had a book. You could do a lot of interesting stuff with the setting. I'd be scared to pay for it and I'm sure my library wouldn't have it. Anyone read it?

I thought I read fall of reach a long time ago but didn't recognize the cover. Then I googled it, and realized they changed the cover.

Here's my collection, unless I'm missing something:

Zork Chronicles - probably hard to find, very silly and quirky. My cat ate the cover. =(

X-Com - I remember it being pretty decent, also probably hard to find now.

Myst: The Book of Atrus - excellent

Gabriel Knight - terrible (loved the game though)

Halo: Contact Harvest - got bored, never finished it

Halo: Fall of Reach - very good

Deus Ex: Icarus - currently reading it, no real opinion

Crysis Legion - kind of terrible

I have the first collection of Warcraft novels. I haven't read all of them, but Day of the Dragon was meh and the book at the end, by Metzen (who I actually think is a great game developer and awesome person) was really bad. Seriously, I swear the word "he was a paladin" was said every 3-4 paragraphs.

That said, I really want to read the Diablo books because I adore the setting. I worry that after DotD that Knaack wouldn't be able to give me the same atmosphere I see in the games.

Is it worth a purchase for someone who doesn't read much?

Because I love uncharted.

Yeah, I think so. I read a lot but picked it up mostly as an Uncharted fan and have found it to be a nice side story
without Elena so far :(

This came in a Gabriel Knight collection I got once, and it was indeed horrible. She actually wrote him doing the adventure game puzzles in the book. Didn't finish it.

Greg Bear writes Halo books nowadays? Holy crap.

Haven't read any books based on video games myself. I know it's ridiculous and snobbish, but I kinda feel like I'd be wasting my time with them when I could be reading "real" novels instead.

What the hell is a "real" novel?

I haven't read this, but Brandon Sanderson is pretty famous.

I did. It's a novella, only on the iBook store if I recall correctly. I thoroughly enjoyed it, however. Infinity Blade hinted at a deep/interesting story and this book was its outing.

If you're a fan of the The Elder Scrolls-series, I recommend the two Greg Keyes novels.

There's a lot of lore, so they're definitely not for everyone, and the whole "Kitchen Wars"-part (yeah, seriously) isn't all that interesting, but they do a great job of painting the situation in Tamriel 40 years after Oblivion. There's also some interesting views at the Planes of Oblivion and the nature of Oblivion itself.

Nice. I'm getting those books free with my copy of Skyrim, should be a good read.

probably unknown to everyone here but the game Stonekeep for PC came with a small book (not instruction booklet but real book) called "Thera Awakening" it was an awesome reading.

I've read it, it's worth it. It tells the story of Rapture in three parts. From rise to fall. The end is somewhere where the first game begins.

It also has ties with the second game.

Whats this one about? Does it have Andrew Ryan in it?
Yes. You really get to know him in the book.

The Sin War by Richard A. Knaak

Book One: Birthright
Book Two: Scales of the Serpent
Book Three: The Veiled Prophet

I finished the first book yesterday and enjoyed it throughoutly.
I am on second book now and I can't stop reading.

I just ordered a bunch of Mass Effect books and the Bioshock book. Hope they are good. Metro 2033 was incredibly immersive. Too bad the sequel apparently sucks. I never got the game to start on Vista 64 though.

I dont know about Stalker but Metro 2033 has about 60 fan fiction books written all in Russian I'm afraid.

Are the Doom books any good?

Has anyone read the Borderlands novel that came out recently? I'm not expecting it to be amazing, but I rather enjoy the setting and wouldn't mind getting a little more B-Lands lore.

Stay as far as possible from the first Baldur's Gate novel as possible. Worst book I've read in my life, seriously.
