Border Break Info Thread (Sega's 10 on 10 online fighter)

Sega announced a location test at TWENTY-FIVE different arcades across the country, starting TOMORROW. To put this into perspective, whenever a new Tekken, Street Fighter or Virtua Fighter game goes on test, it's usually only at 4 - 5 locations. Twenty five is bloody HUGE, and shows that Sega is really pushing for this to be a success. Now if only those assholes would do the same with 5R console. :P

Well, good for them. I wish them the best.

Still though...unless this gets a console/PC port of some sort, I'm afraid the rest of us are just left feeling a bit cold... ;_;

Definitely second the notion of 5R console though.

How does this control, exactly? I wonder if a 360 port (please please please please pleasepleasepleaspleaspleasepleasepleaseplease please) could support the VOOT twinsticks or something. Now that's some wishful thinking.

Well this ended up coming out at some point I guess. I just randomly saw it in Shinsaibashi today. I never saw anything about it so I hope this is the right thread to bump :)

I only got about 20 minutes with it today on my way to a meeting, but it was fun. I didn't get far enough to unlock some of the better stuff, but I tried out two mechs. A fast assault mech and a heavier machine gun/rocket launcher mech. They played pretty differently, and there is a whole level up and customizing system in place. After each match it makes you play a matching game with ??? boxes and it seems like if you match 2 it unlocks something new. I am not 100% on this as I was in a hurry and just pounded the screen randomly though :lol

The controls are a stationary joystick grip on the left which has an analog stick at the top to control movement. The right side is a weird shaped mouse used to aimi. It's nice to have a mouse but the left grip design is kind of silly. I don't know why the hell they didn't make it an actual joystick. sigh

Also I thought I saw someone buying new parts and weapons with the GP(i think thats what they called it) you get from battles.

It was really hard to tell how deep it is though as our team was paired up against CPU opponents. The goal of the map was to destroy a part of the enemy base, and you could advance by capturing spawn points. If the customization is there it really could be fun.

The biggest drawback has to be that there are no headsets for communication. I really get disappointed when I see objective based online games with either non-existent communication or a very meager substitute. Hopefully it will be possible to join a game with someone at the same arcade as you. Not sure really.

Oh and not too mention the complete BULLSHIT pricing scheme. Maybe I am missing something but you get different amounts of GP for how much money you put it. Seemed okay until I managed to finish the first match on my first credit and was then interrupted 5 minutes into the second match with the machine asking for more money. I guess instead of actually paying for 2 matches or something you just get a time limit.

:(

How important did the touchscreen stuff feel to gameplay? Easily recreated with console control pads? I want to see ports of both this and Shining Force Cross to the console (and PC) realm, and Cross' touchscreen implementation is easily ignored but Border Break's might be just that bit more vital and harder to work around.

Yeah the touchscreen is basically just for picking spawn points and menus. Not that important.

I also didn't see an option to invert the aiming controls. Hopefully it is there and I just didn't see it...

Budokai: GP = seconds. So 1 GP = 1 second. The machines I've seen at the moment typically do 260 GP to 100 yen which is pretty decent. 500 yen is 21 minutes of playing which is pretty good my only beef is that buying upgrades and customizing the look of your avatar and mech (colors) costs GP as well. Otherwise, a lot of play time for 500 yen typically.

Anyway, I got to C5 class, the game is really fun. I'm hoping the updates are good for it.

Control invert is in the options as I recall, and you use the map to target mortar attacks with the Heavy class.

I've been playing this game quite a bit...it's a lot of fun but like any team-based game it can really suck if you have bad teammates. You can issue commands and do basic chat with teammates, but good luck trying to get any real deep teamwork going on. It sucks too because once you rank up to a high level, you start losing exp points for losses. Heh, I've had quite a few matches when I was a top scorer in the match but we still ended up losing because my teammates didn't understand how to work together properly. It gets kind of frustrating and makes you not want to keep playing.

The game also desperately needs new maps.

Fun game, but there's a lot of things that I wish were more refined and it's very expensive to play for any decent amount of time. Oh well, hopefully they'll update it with more stuff in the future.

Yeah I just find it weird to not get a set amount of matches for your money. It is slightly annoying that you can run out of points right in the middle of battle and have to fumble for money to get going again.

So wait the only way to get parts is to buy GP? What about the points you get at the end of the battle? Is that GP or something different?

The points you get at the end of a fight are for you to level up through the ranks. They unlock more items for you to buy. The items you buy for your mech (new parts, weapons) are unlocked as you level up. You buy them using materials you earn from battle and using GP that you have from inserting coins.

As for matches, I think the max is 800 Seconds but matches typically take 600 or even faster depending on how good your team is or if you enter in the middle of a game. I've gotten 3 wins (two total matches, and one I joined in towards the end) on one 500 coin.

This is trying to steal the Gundam monies? That game is mad popular here and it went to the PSP. Maybe you'll get the same with this.

Senjou no Kizuna, yeah. Border Break is SEGA's attempt to crack that online arcade mecha game market. Not sure whether a PSP game would work as well as a PS3 port though, as the Ring Edge board is quite advanced compared to Senjou no Kizuna's pretty basic hardware. The storefront side would work on both a PSP and PS3 I reckon.

That said, it would be sad to lose all the cool touchscreen stuff for a home port.

Those who think this won't eventually get a console port are crazy. It's not a lightgun game. It's an online shooter. Those are a wee bit popular on consoles.

NEOGAF will have a online clan set up the day it hits the 360.

Would be awesome as a launch title.

Sega and Microsoft, are you fucking listening?

If Microsoft needs a release to push the 360 and Natal in Japan, this is it.

I have little interest in Natal, until I think of experiences like this, then I get giddy like a school girl.

Wait, so couldn't they recreate the touch screen controls with Natal??

Oh my god this would be Natals killer ap for me.

You probably could do that for the touchscreen stuff but the in-game control would still need a pad/sticks.

Are the updates out yet? I'd love to try this while I'm in Japan next month.

I think they've slowly updated it since release but I'm not quite sure. I haven't played much as of late.

It's less of a money sink than games similar to it though. Since 1 GP is 1 second or so, I can get 25-26 minutes on 500 yen, which is pretty damn good considering arcades like these.
