Bought a Wii, selling my PS3 - some questions

Core407 said:
It's too loud?!? WHAT. That is the dumbest reason to sell it. Also, the PS3 is dead silent - I don't know what that guy is smoking.
you guys probably dont know the PAL 60GB versions or at least not mine. It is OK for games, but sure not for movies.

I must agree that the PS3 is quiet for such a powerful system, but perhaps it's a problem specific to his that needs repair?

He's about to get a Wii to play some games he's wants. He won't have time to play on his 60gb ps3 and it's loud for him. The 60gb model sells well so down the road when he's done playing all those wii games he'll get a 40gb because he doesn't care for bc. Better?

LOL. Did you read the quote in my original post? I was answering somebody's question. I have grasp of what's going on. And was definitely not defending that dude...

yes I did, but he has a 99% backward compatable PS3 right now, the major games are on the way. the 40 offers no backward compat as of today (possible it will via software but who knows). I think he sees a few good Wii games and is thinking short term!

So you do not want Backward compatability. I thought that also but since than I have bought a few PS2 games I missed and glad they play nice on my PS3 for cheap!
OPTIONS its always better to have a choice!

I would recommend getting a Wii as a ssecondary system for most games, unless you hate the PS3. as for the noise the 40, 60, 80, 20 all sound the same so thats not a valid reason for getting rid of it to me...

Good luck with your decission I just have been down that road too many times.. keep your system and just get a Wii..

The 60GB is pretty loud (fans are ramping up in less than 10 minutes, even in the XMB).
The 40GB is totally silent (even after 4-5 hours of Uncharted).

EXCITTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTEE Truck is good.

I enjoyed Godfather, nice melee controls.

Erm Just got Geo Wars (PEWPEWPEW) seems like a good distraction. Mario Strikers is good craic..

Yeah I feel even more strongly than you about BC but some people just don't want/need it. My only gripe with Sony now is them trying to take out BC in the newer model ps3, but I'm glad they're giving people the choice(for now anyway) if they want Backwards Compatability or not(cheaper model).

I actually wish I could hear my 60GB, its so quiet I forget to turn it off.

As for the noise? My NTSC PS3 is relatively quiet BUT... It's gotten significantly louder as time goes on. I really wish Sony sold replacement parts and allowed me to see the service manual. After replacing one of the fans on my laptop and seeing the ENORMOUS difference a cheap fan replacement makes to old computers, I'd love the opportunity to do that with any system I own that has a fan in it.

Shawn Elliot did this a while back...

That's interesting. I was ignorant to the 40GB specs because I own the 60GB. I was drawing conclusions from my comparisons to my 360...and that's another story.

Probably a problem specific to the PAL 60GB. My PAL 40GB is has as quiet as your 60GB.

Same, I can only hear it if the room is silent and it's folding or something. I can hear my 360 in background DL mode when in the next room.

My Wii and laptop are pretty quiet too...

Of course, even the loud PAL 60GB seems quiet when compared to the 360. But the PAL 40GB is really quiet, even compard to an idle Gamecube.

What's the deal with the PAL 60GB being louder than NTSC? BTW, I thought there were no region specific models...

My US 60GB is very quiet. Never got hot on me even on extended Resistance sessions. Could be a PAL thing though.

You just bought a PAL Wii? Are you on crack?

You do know Smash Bros. is delayed indefinitely in PAL territories..

This post says it all. People please do yourselves a favor and don't buy PAL Nintendo consoles. Games are delayed for 6 months on average, some take years to come out like animal crossing and some never make it at all (I don't think the Wii Fire Emblem has been released in Europe). Plus you have to deal with a shitty VC service. Nintendo considers Europe little more than a place to sell gazillions of copies of Brain Age.

I dont really care. I hope I will see some games on Wii I can play with my wife and she wont play them if they are in english (or japanese). I know some of you need every game at launch, but I have enough good games to play on PC already and no time. The games I listed are the ones I want and there are no Wii games on the horizon that are day one must haves for me.

And I dont need VC, I play my retro games on PSP, the small screen makes them look much better.

Yeah, seriously.

get a 360

No really, get Zack and Wiki now. With SMG. Then your fine by me since I know everything.

...GAF is horrible.

I think people need to rethink LOUD.. It's realative to alot of other things. Room size/ dimmensions/ Proximity to the unit itself. I mean from my couch 10 feet away I can not hear the PS3.

Downstairs im 4-5 feet away and I can hear it. My 360 I think I could hear from my car..

So i think the loud factor could be different for each user / room..

I quite agree with Zack here is the Must have list

Zelda, Metroid, Super Mario Galaxy, Godfather, Scarface, Zack and Wiki, Resident Evil 4, Elebits, Dragon ball Z, Medal Of Honor 2, Smash Brothers of course, Super paper Mario, Lego Star Wars Complete, Mario Stikers, and Screw them all Fire Emblem...

The Wii has some great titles, and while not the Graphics whores dream come true more than capable of offering some fun.. I still loves me PS3 though..

I just bought a Wii to play through a handful of games that are must haves for me (SMG, MP3, RE4&UC, Z&W). Any sleeper hits I might want to check out? Wii games are region coded, right? Hard to find PAL version of RE:UC at an acceptable price.

As I wont have time for my PS3 and 60GB version sells at good price I will get rid of it. Will get a 40GB later (dont care for PS2 BC and my 60GB is loud). What about the stuff I bought from PSN?. This is bound to the account, not the machine, right? Anything I have to pay attention to when deleting my accounts on the PS3?

How about BluRay movies bundled with Bluray players, do you get these free movies with PS3 too? (in europe?). Bluray movies are really expensive over here, might consider importing if in the US you get a bunch of free ones.
Sellin' your PS3 and buying a Wii?? lmao

Yeah, only if, not when, only if.
:lol

Man, WHO CARES PEOPLE! it's the same thing as "I'm going to sell my Wii and buy an HD system" threads that we've had before.

The base will always argue against it and console warring erupts. Not anything new, no need to get so uppity.

What's with all the: "OMG HOW DARE YOU SELL YOUR PS3?" in here. There's nothing wrong with the Wii, and selling a 60GB should net him a nice profit.

EDIT: Meltdown? :lol

I kind of want to sell my Wii and buy a 40gb PS3. Too bad the thing has disc read errors, and after 9 business days Nintendo still hasn't sent me my repair box. I got my RRoD 360 back in a total of 10 days from the day I called (8 business days).
Nintendo doesnt send a repair box. they give you a shipping label.

I tried this thread and it did not go well for me. I was assaulted. People probably remember that one.

This is what happened OP check it out - http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=218497

Huh? That's not remotely the same.

Blame Xbots for that clusterfuck.

@OP;
Wii games ARE region coded.

When you get round to picking up a PS3 again, Movietyme sell import Blurays, and have a list of which ones work on the PS3, and at substantially cheaper than you can buy them 'locally'.

Resident Evil: Umbrella Chronicles - ÂŁ28 (in stock, I'd consider it a reasonable price - it is much, much, much longer than the 'average' lightgun game)

As for sleeper hits, there aren't really any you haven't mentioned except maybe Mercury Revolution (if you can find it cheap)

EDIT: If you don't need the cash right now, you might want to consider holding off on selling your 60Gb until Easter - there's usually increased sales of stuff across the board, and if Sony haven't introduced a BC unit in Europe by then, you might be able to sell for a bit more than its technically worth on Ebay or whatever as people clamouring for PS3 GTA4 trade in their old PS2s to get one, then find they can't play the old ones...

EDIT2: fuck, yeah I forgot Excite Truck as a 'sleeper hit'. Excite Truck owns.

I would recommend Endless Ocean, EXcite Truck, Zack and wiki, No More Heroes. A few more promising third party games are coming in 2008 as well so well see how that goes.

If you find the PS3 to be loud don't get a X360, that's for damn sure :lol

PS3 is pretty silent though, I don't see how noise would be an issue unless your machine kicks up to the highest fan setting for whatever reason (this happened a few times with my 60gig unit, hasn't happened yet with my 80gig).

My 60GB does that exact same thing. The fans go into overdrive mode around the 10 minute mark and its almost as lound as my 360. I gave my 60GB to my dad because he got a Sony LCD last year and he was interested in Blu-Ray. I then bought a 40GB and can't believe how quiet it is compared to my 60GB. I wouldn't even know the 40GB was turned on if not for the blue light on the front of it.

Some of the early 60GB launch models were quite loud and its pretty well documented.

I fold all the time on my PS3 (upwards of 18+ hours straight) and it never comes close to sounding like my 360.

I believe the loudness of the 60GB SKU is tied to the resolution output:

720p and below: quiet
1080p: turbine

I have mine set to 1080p and the fan noise is definitely comparable to that of the X360.
