Bought Bloodborne, tips before I start?

While I personally feel bloodborne and the souls games have VERY different feels to them they have some key similiarities.

The main one for me is this. The games should be treated as two forms of puzzles. The first is the level area. It is a puzzle in itself and should be extensively explored before moving on to a boss.

The second is the boss itself.

If you have solved the level puzzle you will have gained a ton of items that might help you with the boss and should have a very easy run to the boss due to either a new bonfire/lamp or shortcuts being found/opened.

For example with
cleric beast, on bridge
, If you have solved the level you will have
a short cut that means you can run to him in seconds
and
a butt load of molatoves that can fuck him up
.

It's what I love about the games design the most and I find most other games these days deeply lacking.

Not to mention, that you can
upgrade your weapon before the boss and level up
, if you explore the area.

Wow, the first area is FUCKED. Have to fight through tons of mobs just to get to the main boss and no bonfires in between? If the whole game is this abusive (DS 1/2 were not), I'll be selling this.

haha, git gud.

The first area is great, you just have to be patient.

That's not the attitude of someone who bypassed Anor Londo's archers.

You can level up once you see the first boss, you don't have to kill it. The doll shows up once you have a point in Insight.

You don't need to see the boss to level up. You just need 1 insight. There are several madman's knowledge you can use before getting to the boss.

Against big bosses, stay close and be aggressive.
Against smaller bosses, parrying works wonders.
In general, parrying is far less risky than the Souls games, familiarise yourself with it in the first area and other parts of the game will get much easier for you.

Lock on to bosses. Don't listen to the hyperbole. Then you can quick dodge and immediately counter. If you don't lock you roll away and usually have to swing the camera around to ensure you are actually hitting anything. Just lock on and deal with the camera. Quick button tap unlocks anyway.

The beginning is HARD. The first bosses are fast and powerful and it can be frustrating. Just be patient and look for openings

Learn your weapons alternative stances and use the moves together often. You are able to do sheath and unsheathe moves in combos

I played the game back in June for the first time and as an avid Souls player (beat Demon and Dark 1 plenty of times) omg, the combat and gameplay took me so long to get used to. I eventually put the game down (I was actually pretty far along when I stopped playing, but stuff came up and I didn't have time to game for a little while) and just restarted a new character 2 nights ago and lol, I stormed through half the first area without much trouble and took down the first kind-of-optional boss on my second try. People say take it slow, but it's almost like tactical aggression is the key to the game.

I just picked up this game yesterday (best buy deal) and so far... well, it's sorta annoying. The beginning is really difficult and every time I die I have to start back at practically the beginning of the level. heh.

However, I just beat those two wolves on top of the bridge and opened up the door so when I die I can just bypass that part.

Still though, I hate replaying shit over and over to get to where I died.

That being said, gameplay is fun.. I died like a dozen times but was still having enough fun (so far) to keep at it.

Graphically, looks like a ps3 game but enemies/animation seem pretty top notch.

For all the people who just bought Bloodborne:

You need 1 point of Insight in order for the doll in Hunter's Dream to be 'alive' and level up through her. You can find an item called Madman's Knowledge that grants you one Insight; there is one of these in the sewers, near where you pick up the Saw Spear.

Encountering a boss for the first time (or entering some areas for the first time) grant you one Insight. Note: you don't need to kill the boss to get Insight; simply initiating the fight is enough.

Did you open the shortcut (the gate) next to Gilberts house?, it to take you back up to the bridge in less than 20seconds.

I wish I had more PS3 games that looked like this.

I don't know what PS3 games you're playing but I've yet to see one that comes close to Bloodborne's level when it comes to graphics.

Without a doubt, Bloodborne is the technical showcase of the two, and a true current-gen successor to the Dark Souls throne - packed as it is with a level of detail far beyond last-gen's reach.

I'm pretty sure, that's the gate right past the wolves correct? If so yes, game seems to be getting easier since I've killed those guys and don't have to deal with them. Game is fun so far, despite having to replay stuff over and over. I never played a souls game before. As far as my graphical comment, I don't mean that it looks terrible. There is a lot of detail in the environments, animation is great but also a bunch of jaggies and I've already noticed frame-rate slowdowns and I've just started the game.

You'll be dying to bosses a lot probably so remember you're not forced to kill every enemy on sight. You can run past them as well, though killing them will help get more echoes which in turn you can use to level up and buy consumables like blood vials. Let me tell you this before you run out of vials aswell, farming for vial isn't required at all. You can buy them from the messenger bath in the hunters dream. If you're running low on echoes remember you have kin coldblood which you can find in the world and use to get echoes or just

"y'know just go out and kill a few beasts, it's just what hunters do"

Beat Father without cheesing, damn that feels good. Thanks for the tips.

Well done. If you have problems with BSB, just buy the 10k key from the dream, and explore the other areas. You can return to face the boss later on when you've levelled up, and gotten gear with a better poison resistance. That's what I've done on all of my playthroughs.

The 3rd boss, Blood Starved Beast (BSB) who is optional as Mel said, was the ONLY boss I didn't solo in my first playthrough. That one was a real PITA. So yea, feel free to spend 10k echoes to get the key. But the next boss is also pretty tough so I'd explore away and level up

The other optional boss is easy though, and the area is a good farming ground for Blood Echoes. I've usually beaten that one first, then BSB, and then the mandatory VA.

- Classic Souls advice, don't get greedy.

- You'll benefit from playing a bit more aggressively than you do in Souls.

- You'll have to pick one weapon out of three when you start, but if you regret your choice, the other weapons will be available to you soon enough.

- Appreciate the wonderful world design and all it's little details. It is a delightfully spooky and creepy game with an interesting story.

PS3 game my ass. The level of detail in the world around you is amazing and one of the best looking games this gen.

So I managed to kill lots of guys in the first area. Died at the two wolfs up there on the bridge. Is this the right way to go?

And what do I do with the souls I collect? I bought the armor, but can't find any other way to spend them.

The biggest graphical problems are the frame rating pacing issues and the abuse of chromatic aberration. The former comes from From not being that good on a technical level (despite being excellent game designers), and the latter is just a questionable decision in terms of art direction.

You use echoes to level up,
You can level up by having 1 insight which you can get from encountering bosses or consuming Madmans Knowledge.

You level up in the hunters dream by talking to the doll. If you 0 insight she won't be able to talk.

Praise the sun, bro!
This was really annoying, tbh.

Not really it's super easy to get.

So I have to continue until I beat the first boss? Is he somewhere after those wolfes?

Yes the boss is further up from the wolves, if you don't want to go for the boss now but want 1 insight follow this.

Edit: you can still encounter the boss and use hunters marks to get out of there if you find that easier.

I find it to be good game design. It forces you to learn how to play. The first few hours of Bloodborne are a pure trial by fire and that's completely fine, as it prepares you for the rest of the game.

Yes, he's after the wolves. And you don't have to beat him . You'll gain 1 insight the first time you encounter him and you'll be able to level up after that.

I know. I understand that. I'm not saying it was bad. But it was annoying. Specially because I was like: "How do I level up? How do I level up?" How do I level up?".

And tip to OP: If you know the way, try running. You don't actually need to engage with every enemy.

Equipment stats >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Levelling Up.

I will agree that not even knowing how to level up was a bit frustrating at first. I thought I was missing something.

I really don't get why people have trouble with BSB. I did die a few times on him, but then again I'm not a very good Souls player. However she's way too easy since you can
dodge left when it tries to strike with its right hand (her main attack apart from charge which you can also sidestep), which is telegraphed for a few seconds and then get easy couple of hits from the back. She will then turn around and try to do the same all over. If she tries any other kind of attack just step back and let her go through the animations, but when she raises her hand, it's time to deal damage.

This simple tactic works at any stage, totally negates any damage and even if you get hit once with poison, it's easy to disengage heal up and repeat.

By the way for people having trouble with werewolves, use the same tactic for easy kills.

I found Gascoigne much tougher than that, and Amy as well and a lot of other bosses.

BSB was the first "wall" I hit in the game. It took me around 15 attempts to take down.

On NG+ I defeated BSB on my first try. I got hit once. It felt real good.

I keep reading people having trouble with BSB and for the life of me I couldn't remember that boss since it's been about 4 months since I played before my new character. I googled it and am like, really? He took me a few tries, but I don't remember anything groundbreakingly difficult with it. If anything, I remember all the bosses I fought took me a couple tries of learning their moves and adjusting accordingly, except for Father G. I swear that one took me a hundred tries cause I was still getting used to the combat. Paarl gave me fits and took me I think the second longest to beat.

My two main frustration with the game and something you probably have to look out for, it has nothing to do with bosses or areas:

1) You can't respecc- That means if you fucked up your stats in the early game there's no way to fix it later. And it also means that if you change your mind and want to use that new weapon with a different stat focus, you can't.

2) There is hardly enough upgrade materials to go around. Nevermind maxing out a weapon, there's hardly enough to get to +9 for more than 2 or 3 weapons. And grinding those materials is a pain in the ass.

All of this means that you're almost guarantee to restart a character to make a laser guided focus on you intended build and weapon right from the very beginning.... Or just follow a walkthrough.

With only six stats to level up (two of them being Vitality and Endurance, which are always good to pour blood echoes into), it's pretty hard to screw up a character build. Dark Souls II has a respec item because there are too many flippin' things to level up, making it much easier to ruin a build if you don't know what you want early on.
