PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) is known for its provocative ads--many of them featuring women in various states of undress--that aim to draw attention (however indirectly) to animal rights. But their latest ad, a Valentine's Day video that warns women about the "dangers" of their boyfriends' burgeoning veganism, may have crossed a line.
The ad, released online Monday, shows a limping, pantsless woman sporting a neckbrace, struggling to carry a bag of vegetables home from the store. (Unsurprisingly, we'll warn that this ad, embedded below, may be a bit too racy for the eyes of younger viewers.)
"This is Jessica," the narrator, Kevin Nealon, says. "She suffers from 'BWVAKTBOOM,' 'Boyfriend Went Vegan and Knocked the Bottom Out of Me,' a painful condition that occurs when boyfriends go vegan and can suddenly bring it like a tantric porn star."
Jessica's boyfriend is then shown fixing a hole in their bedroom wall. "Oh, you're feeling better?" he asks as she disrobes.

A call to PETA revealed that the campaign was slated to be launched on Valentine's Day; the accompanying BWVAKTBOOM.com website, launched Monday, includes "tips on how to have sex safely with vegans—such as mounting all TVs and mirrors securely to the wall."
But does the ad also promote violence against women?
"The piece is tongue-in-cheek," Lisa Lange, a senior vice president for PETA, told Yahoo News. "People who watch the ad all the way through see the woman has a mischievous smile. She's happy to go back with him. It's playful."
But released on the day after the Grammy Awards, when some criticized the show's producers for allowing a performance by singer Rihanna's ex-boyfriend—and domestic abuser—Chris Brown, you have to wonder if PETA is striking the right tone.
"PETA is going for shock value here," Michael Learmonth, digital editor at Advertising Age, wrote in an email to Yahoo News. "But I don't think portraying women as beat up physically is a good idea, even in jest."
Learmonth added: "These ads aren't made for TV, so the strategy here is that they will cause controversy, trigger coverage, and go viral."
Last week, the group executed a pre-Valentine's Day stunt in Shreveport, La., placing a live couple making out in a bed downtown to promote the vegan lifestyle. A sign on the headboard read: "Vegans Make Better Lovers."
Prior to the Super Bowl, PETA released a "Girls Gone Wild"-style anti-milk ad that it said was banned from the broadcast.

Anyway, it's just better to watch it, so here is the link

So fucking tasteless.

We should start a group called People against the Proliferation and Propaganda of PETA.

It would be called P-P-P-Peta and would entirely consist of throwing cow innards at peta protestors.

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals and the Abhorrent Treatment of Women.

I suppose the difference is consent. But, shit, what do I know?

Anyway, I won't give them the view so they can use it to argue how successful the campaign was.

Yuck. Someone call these dudes.

Doesn't PETA release these ads knowing that they aren't going to be received well and mainly do it to get their names in the news?

Showed it to my GF. She said the ad was bad but not because of violence of women. Just an awkward way to advertise being vegan. She said that violence towards women never crossed her mind.

yes, it's the same reason companies will release ads with "racial" tinges... the controversy can be more effective as advertising than the ad itself

How silly. Do ads like this actually work? How dumb is the general population?

I came to pretty well post this exactly. I have to imagine that just about zero people have gone vegan thanks to any of these dumb ass commercials.

I think I'm going to have McDonalds for lunch and Burger King for dinner today. Down with cows.

That's fucked up. Besides, going Vegan is going to actually reduce your energy and is NOT a safe way to live. Going vegetarian? Totally safe, but vegan-ism is complete horse shit.

Really they should have done one about how not eating meat makes your sperm taste better.

My gf didn't get it either (and neither did I). The chick in the video is getting ****ed doggystyle against the wall, rams her head into it, and hurts her neck. The dude didn't beat her, dunno where people are getting that idea from.

Either way, my gf thought the ad was stupid, and did nothing to help the PETA/vegan cause.

eh? how is it tasteless. Ad is implying that vegan boyfriends are better lovers. She got hurt during sex, but accidentally, because it was so wild.

It's not advocating spousal abuse, jesus.

How the **** do they get being vegan = having crazy insane sex?

Vegans tend to think animal products are bad for you, going vegan is healthier for you, you'll feel better, have more stamina, etc.

It's not even the concept - it's the execution. The way she drags herself home, half-naked to bring him food, then engage in more sex makes the ad so obnoxious.

Read above.

i dont think peta really cares about animals. they have to know their approach is tasteless and a turn off to the everday person that eats animals. i'm personally vegetarian and i fucking hate peta because they do nothing but make vegetarianism look like it's for hipster elitists. it can't have any purpose other than to make a few quick bucks for the people on top.

Completely tasteless.

PETA has to be one of the worst organizations you can donate to. Insanely hypocritical and they misuse money at an insanely high rate.

Wait.. What? I know Vegans who have ended up being rather lethargic from a lack of protien. I know there are better ways to obtain protien with careful choices, but the point is, "being vegan = more energy" does not follow.

eh, only offensive to those looking to be offended. why do you assume the food is for him, or only for him? what's wrong with women wanting to get laid?

of course it's bullshit. But that's what vegans will tell you if you let them

Hire me PETA for I have an awesome idea for your next ad!

Have the people who eat meat be the nazis during WW2 and the vegans would be the allied troops who freed Europe.

Because eating meat is as bad as the nazis were, get it?

I think the tastelesness (at least for me) derives from it's similarities to spousal abuse commercials - in fact, it parodies them.

To address the argument that they are hypocritically debasing women while preaching respect for animals, the women in PETA's ads get to choose to be in them. Animals don't get to make choices about anything (which is why PETA advocates on their behalf, believing they have moral worth but no voice to express it). I'm not a PETA type of person, but I can understand their rationale for doing this kind of ad, if indeed they have a rationale and aren't just doing whatever will make people talk.

Really? Their angle is the "vegan superpowers" joke from Scott Pilgrim?

Apparently going vegan doesn't help your brain.

Exactly. It would have been LEAGUES better (and more funny) if they had done a spoof on Always Sunny, where Frank and Artemis have sex with food all over themselves.
