NEW YORK (CNNMoney) -- Despite battling slower growth of its own, Brazil's economy surpassed that of the sputtering United Kingdom in 2011, according to a new estimate from the Centre for Economics and Business Research.
Brazil's Gross Domestic Product for the year was $2.469 trillion, according to the study -- making it the sixth-largest economy in the world.
Brazil eked ahead of the United Kingdom -- which had total production of $2.420 trillion -- by a razor-thin margin of only $49.2 billion.

The United States, China, Japan, Germany and France remain the five largest economies in the world.

Brazil slashed interest rates by a larger-than-expected 75 basis points on Wednesday, stepping up its battle to revive struggling industries that threaten to derail the recovery of Latin America's largest economy.

In its boldest move since August, when it surprised markets and began the current round of cuts, the central bank lowered its benchmark Selic lending rate to 9.75 percent from 10.50 percent in a split decision.

Two of the bank's seven directors wanted to lower the rate by half a percentage point for the fifth straight meeting.

It was only the second time on record that Brazil has cut the Selic below 10 percent, taking borrowing costs to their lowest level in nearly two years.

Directors made the decision hours after data showed industrial output fell nearly three times more than economists had expected, the latest indicator to suggest Brazil's boom is fizzling.

Surprised it took this long. Brazil has oil, lots of hydroelectric power, massive agriculture, etc.

Brazil really don't have that much hydroelectric power. Just because they get something like 90% of electricty from hydro power doesn't mean much. They are already in troubles when it comes to peak hours and growing electricty usage is a real problem for brazil.

And it only took 3.5x the amount of people.

Lets say it's all about the size of the country. :P

Well, they better keep growing! Brazil is one of my options for immigration in the near future. Gotta refine my Portuguese but I speak a great portuñol :P.

Thing is, we Brits have had 50+ years to get used to being less significant, the insecure American tears are going to be amazing when China and India surpass them.

Aha!

I bet it's through the royalty deal they have with the stylish downstairs 'hair-cut'!

- maybe it's taken off with the male population worldwide.

There is a Brazilian woman on my MA course who comes from a family that would make most people in the UK (and USA for that matter) look poor. The disparity between rich and poor over there is shocking.

Per Capita GDP is ALL that matters

USA is number 7

Canada is 14

UK is 22

Brazil is 74.......

This is naive thinking. GDP refers to how much money there is in general. The bigger the GDP grows the more likely companies are to invest their markets in that area. Sure China has HORRIBLE GDP per capita, but there's a reason why companies keep trying to get into the market.

Per capita or not #2 (soon to be 1) in the world is still #2. Just like #6 is still #6. And its economy is only going to grow faster.

And China owns most of our country now? Seems like someone needs to check their facts.

I love it when people say this. It really proves who knows their shit and who buys into media fear mongering.
