Both Canada and Sweden have legal gun ownership, but they have extremely tight regulations. So there's a model there.

But Canada keeps gun legal mostly for their hunting hobbyist. I don't think you can own handguns.

You can own handguns in Sweden, but their regulations are really strict.

Not only can you own handguns in Canada, you can order them over the internet and they are delivered to your door via regular mail.

On that page there's a Chinese-made 1911 .45acp pistol (Norinco) that can be bought for the equivalent of about $220 USD, and is very well made and of good steel. Clinton banned their importation to the US in the 1990's.

The difference, as far as I understand it, is that Canadians have to first obtain the permit to purchase firearms, which requires the background check and perhaps a safety class (I'm not Canadian, so not sure on specifics). But once you have the permit, buying one is just a matter of placing an order online and waiting for it to show up at your house.
