McLaren have been stripped of their points in the 2007 Formula One constructors' championship after the outcome of the 'spygate' row.
The team was also hit with a record $100m (£49.2m) fine but drivers Lewis Hamilton and Fernando Alonso will be allowed to keep their points.

The team must also prove there is no Ferrari 'intellectual property' in its cars next eyar before they can race.

McLaren team chief Ron Dennis is due to speak at a 1915 BST news conference.

Full story to follow

haha holy shit they get ZERO constructors points this year? I thought they were just going to take 15.... man they have to be pissed! :lol

They should have knocked the driver points so much that all top 3 drivers are even. Fuck fairness, I want an exciting end of the season.

GO FERARI!

It looks like this "lone engineer" (who was actually very high up at McClaren) had documents not only at home, but they had been shown to other people at McClaren and were in McClarens shop.

Now, McClaren says they told the guy to go away and didnt actually use the docs but didnt report it to the FIA or Ferrari.. thus the hammer gets brung.

Spy Gate in a nut shell: Pissed off Ferrari employee who didn't get promoted to tech director because basically he wasn't qualified in the slightest starts giving info to Macca chief designer Coughlan. Emails, texts and also a 780 page document containg everything about Ferrari and it's F2007, operating procedures, engineers, aero, budget...you name it it was leaked.

Coughlan gets his wife to scan the documents at printing shop. Printing shop attendent: "ere old on a minit, this orse aint mclaren, im gonna buzz the toad an tell him weird shits going down". Ferrari "oh nos they have eveything :(". Ferrari write a letter to FIA, big hearing in July but McLaren somehow prove only Coughlan knew and the info wasn't used on their car. Dennis grins like an arse. Todt :(. Flash forward to 2 weeks ago and it appears new evidence has come to light. Someone blew the whistle in McLaren and the truth is revealed. Apparently email exchanges show that Coughlan has been telling anyone within macca who will listen about the info and even running it through Macca simulators (allegedly). Mclaren get punished.

At the end of the day the sponsors won't be too pissed because the drivers still get to win. But in all likelyhood Alonso will leave.

That's not screwed, that's quadruple penetration without vaseline and dicks wrapped with sandpaper

Yeah, you put it more eloquently. McLaren got more than just screwed. They got a "quadruple penetration without vaseline and dicks wrapped with sandpaper."

yeah, if the new info is true, I cant believe the drivers werent docked points as well.

Im guessing Hamiltons extreme popularity he's bringing to the sport and the thought of a rookie winning it all is what saved him and alansos season.

Also: Alonso to Ferrari. Fire Massa. Alonso helping the engineers = much improved car. Kimi driving said much improved car = win.

I figured they would lose their constructors points for the season but $100 million fine, thats a huge fine. The FIA should be give the penalty to the patriots and there head coach in the NFL!

My dad is a Jets fan, so yeah, he'd be inclined to agree with you there.

Completely over the top in my opinion.

BS. If they were running these things in simulators, they would have known EVERYTHING about the car. Aero, how the car reacts to different traffic situations, tire wear, top speed, where the car excelled, where it has deficiencies, gas mileage. The competitive advantage gained by this knowledge (plus the ability to adapt their own car based on what Ferrari is doing) is absolutely huge.

I think the fact that they didnt lose their drivers points makes it lenient. This is blatant disregard for sportsmanship and the FIA's rules.

Had they reported this as soon at Stepney gave anyone at McClaren documents they would be fine. They didnt.

The FIA gave the drivers a deal: hand over the incriminating evidence and get immunity, keep quiet and get screwed over along with the team. The drivers accepted the bribe, so got to keep their points.

Yes, but the reason this was offered was because the outrage out of England would have been much greater if the wunderkind lost his championship because of this.

He sure would look good in red though

I smell conspiracy...didn't this all start with some 'pissed off' Ferrari technician leaking documents?

Cool. Thanks for the recap. Now for the other non-F1 fans, what is a constructor point and what does this mean for McLaren in terms of F1?

Coughlan said:
However, once he did pass that information to Coughlan, the Brit showed it to McLaren, something the Woking team has claimed never happened. The information included designs of Ferrari's floor device, a rear wing flap separator, and a technique to lower the floor of the car.

"Details of the floor device were sent to me by email to my McLaren work email address," Coughlan continued. "I showed the email fleetingly to Martin Whitmarsh, who asked me to take up the issue with Paddy Lowe, McLaren's engineering director.

"I produced a schematic drawing for Lowe, which I understand he forwarded to the FIA. The FIA subsequently declared the floor device as falling outside the regulations.

"Details of the rear wing device were also sent by email to me. I briefly showed this email to Lowe. I understand he reported this to Charlie Whiting of the FIA at the Melbourne Grand Prix, but he was of the opinion that the design was legal.

And thus silly season began.

sweet.. so now we know they had a direct competitive advantage used in race by getting these designs. Were I Kimi or Massa right now, I would be throwing a fit to the FIA that they are going to lose their shut at a worlds championship partially due to a competitive advantage gained by their competition illegally.

For those that dont know: constructors points are a big deal.

A constructors championship actually matters, unlike a Nascar team championship.. people care and the teams care. It also determines how much money the team gets from the FIA at the end of the year..

When a driver places high enough to scores points, the team gets the same amount of points towards the Constructors Championship. The order teams finish at the end of the year determines things like prize money (I think the winner gets something like $50million), as well as other side benefits such as more space in the garages, better position in the pit lane, etc, and of course being able to claim that you are the best team in adverts will help with sponsorship.

better than I put it.. it really isnt directly comparable to anything in NASCAR or other American racing.

McClaren being better than Ferrari cars PGR4 confirmed

i know nothing about racing. Interesting story though!
In PGR3, the McLaren F1 GTR > the Ferrari F50 GT. IMHO. :D

Advantage to Vodafone sponshorship: Free international calls.

"Hey Lewis, just got off the phone.. Honda will take us both."
"Screw this, I'm going to Nascar."

Guess we'll have to wait for the full statement tomorrow, because right now (and from what was leaked) this decision is ridiculous

Mosley: "You (drivers) collaborated with us and gave valuable information. Therefore they may retain its points."

The german translation also hints at a further decision to be made in december but I think the machine translation is inconclusive.

Norbert Haug, Benz motorsport boss: "I'm shocked!". have a burger, that usually cheers you up.

Just heard this on the radio. HOLY MOTHER ****!!!

This came out of the blue. But it's great to see a sporting body to give such substantial fine/docking of points rather than the £5k FIFA gives to football teams etc...
