Brief Psychonauts Impressions (Or: The Official Thread)

So is there anyone else out there besides myself that enjoyed Psychonauts more than any other of Tim's games? I mean don't get me wrong, I absolutely loved Grim Fandango and Day of the Tentacle but I gotta be honest and say that I ended up enjoying Psychonauts a lot more, and not just because it's an action game. From the characters to the music, the whole thing just seemed to resonate with me.

I just can't say enough good things about this game.

Yes, I love it. And he had a pretty high standard to meet. My GOTY so far (and it's in close and good company).

Well at least I'm not alone. :) Nostalgia sometimes gets the better of us when judging these things and we tend to look back with rose tinted glasses. Psychonauts, imo, is definately Tim's most accomplished work to date which is pretty remarkable when you consider his previous games. And it's a shame more people around here haven't played this or aren't interested in it. This really is one of the best games released this year but most everyone seems to be oblivious to it.

Nostalgia isn't a factor for me because I've played all of his games for the first time within the last year!

4 pages is more than I thought we'd get!

My list would probably go like this..

1.Grim Fandango
2.Psychonauts
3.Day of the Tentacle
4.Monkey Island 2
5.Full Throttle
6.Monkey Island

I counted MI, since he did help create those games. I just hope there is a sequel to Psychonauts. :(

I'm kinda disappointed duckhuntdog hasn't made an appearance. Everytime someone started a Psychonauts thread his dumb ass would be in there trolling it.

Haha, i know..he probably thinks it's a generic platformer still

Eh, pretty much what I was told from the buds at MS. Run of the mill platformer with snappy dialog. Tim would do better with adventure games, but as we all know, graphics killed adventure games, right Tim?

Great art + weak gameplay = no buy. Schaffer should go back to doing adventure games.

I've done duckhuntdog's Psychonauts trolling duty for him. Sleep easy sweet prince.

Wow..is he one of those idiots mad at tim for that comment?

Who the hell knows what duckhuntdog is mad about. All I can discern from duckhuntdog is that he hates anything that doesn't have a Nintendo label slapped on to it. Maybe someone has stolen his brain....hmmm. Quick get out your bacon and call Ford Cruller!

When was Psychonauts first playable?

Not sure but Oxy posted some vague hands on impressions over a year ago around the same time MS dropped the game. Of course they were negative and it stuck in a lot of people's minds.

"Lucky!"

PC version ships tommorow (they told me this on Saturday, so it doesnt seem like a random made up ship date).. so I will be getting my Psychonauts on tommorow or Wednesday.. which is no good because I need to make sure I graduate this semester..

but if there is anyone in the world worth spending another semester in school for, its Tim.

Yeah, it looks like it ships tomorow. It was susposed to ship monday... So wed it is

You know, It's really fucking shitty how they still haven't announced the delay of the PC version.

Also, this forum needs angry smilies.

You know I really want this game, but the cheapskate in me knows if I wait a few months I can snag it for $20..

I don't know about that. With the timing of the PS2 version, I think it might take a little longer.

Bah! Trade in some games you never play and get it. Psychonauts is definately worth it your cash.

Just started it again and the game still makes me laugh. I can't remember the last time I've heard such perfect voice acting in a console game. Sure games like KOTOR, Jak and Daxter, Soul Reaver, MGS3, Jade Empire, etc. have excellent voice overs but they don't seem to be as perfect as this. Of course all those Lucasarts adventure games had tremendous voice talent as well so I guess it's to be expected from a Tim Schafer title.

And the music! Both the day and night camp music is incredible, imo. I've kicked myself back into the camp area several times just so i could listen to it.

God I love this game. :)

yeah, they probably should have.

Also, go buy this game at full price. The PC version allready costs less (but they make about the same $$ due to lower fee's) allready.. plus if you get it at EBworld.com you get 10 bucks back in the mail... This is one of those deals where if you really want to play the game and more like it, you need to pay full price to help keep the dev team alive...

plus, if this game can put up solid April NPD numbers, that might get Tim and company further financing for future projects.

You guys didn't hear?

I'm still waiting for the PC release which isn't bad because I'm still waiting for my dualshock converter to come in the mail and I've got finals this week.

For meaty plants!

(And now to finally sit down and play this game some more. I finished the awesome fantastic orgasmic level that is the Milkman Conspiracy... and started the actresses' level but I forget her name as unfortunately due to work and the hazards of trying to court a coffee shop girl, I have not gotten a chance to continue. HOWEVER, two days off are head of me and with Tim as my witness, I will finish this amazing game before those days are up! And start over again.)

I'm still partial to the Bonapart level. Part because I'm a huge boardgame geek and partly because the mixture of adventuring and platforming on that level was spot on.

Plus the changing perspectives was really cool.

I <3 Tim

yeah, but if this game completely tanks whatever funding he has from a publisher could dry up.. starting a new project and finishing it are two very different things.

Finally got it, wasn't easy I really had to call around.

Played through the obstacle course. Seems like good solid stuff: double jumps, trapeze swinging, rail grinding.

I still haven't figured out if I have any psychic powers, though.

I like that dude with the messed up teeth and the fro.

How long was this game guys?

I have a very limited amount of funds and if it's a game that I could rent and get through everything then I might go that route.
But my heart wants to buy it and support it.

If you're not hell bent on collecting everything, you could probably finish it somewhere around 8 to 12 hours. Honestly though, I rather enjoy the collecting aspect in this game. Going through the campgrounds and finding all the scavenger hunt items and cards trying to reach that 100 rank was pretty rewarding.

Trade some games in to get this. You won't be disappointed.

You could probably blast through it in 10, a normal person would take 15, getting 100% would probably take 20-25, getting everything and hearing all the dialogue would probably take over 30

That is exactly what I wanted to hear. As long as there are some cool things to do to give the game some more playtime then I'm in.
I'll probably pick it up this week.

Roland: Did you get it for PC? because I still havent gotten it.. if it isnt in tommorow, Im just getting it on Xbox.

My PC version shipped Monday, even though I already cracked and bought the xbox one.

I'm probably going to go ahead and grab this. Just wish that Fry's could have had it on sale like my recent purchases in GoW, SC3, and Jade Empire..

This may spoil some of the illusion, but I was so impressed by the voice acting in Psychonauts I decided to look 'em up on the web and found some their pictures. I couldn't find everyone but here's a few of the pics of the real people behind the voices:
