If anyone was ever deserving of the title 'sir' it is this man. Apologies if the thread has been done, but I thought his accomplishments deserve to be acknowledged on GAF. Checked the last few pages, couldn't see anything.

Here's a video if you're not sure why you should be paying your respects.

Wiki: "Sir Nicholas George Winton was a British humanitarian who organised the rescue of 669 children, mostly Jewish, from Nazi-occupied Czechoslovakia on the eve of the Second World War in an operation later known as the Czech Kindertransport. Winton found homes for the children and arranged for their safe passage to Britain. The British press has dubbed him the "British Schindler". On 28 October 2014, he was awarded the highest honour of the Czech Republic, the Order of the White Lion, by the Czech president, Miloš Zeman."

Here's a short video from 60 Minutes fully explaining what happened, with a few interviews.

What a wonderful man.

That video man...wow. I hadn't heard of this man before opening the thread, but I'm glad I know who he is/was now.

R.I.P

I can't view the video right now - can someone maybe bullet point some awesome stuff this guy did? Sounds like a boss.

there you go.

A rare man of rare accomplishment and character. Made it to 106, so it's hard to be really sad. He lived a full life and we are lesser without him.

.

Any reason why they waited for him to become 105 before honoring him?

RIP.

A true reminder that while there is incredible evil in this world, there are also incredible forces for good that manage to triumph. RIP.

How did I not know he existed?

That video is amazing.

The greatest of people are usually those you will never hear about. For half a century, until 1988, Sir Nicholas Winton was silent about his rescuing of the children. And I'm almost certain he would have taken it with him to the grave if not for his wife finding the logs in their attic.

I had not known of him. But I am glad to have noticed this thread and just read a bit regarding his life story. R.I.P sir. The world needs more like you.
