Broforce PS4 is fucking terrible

YouTube was always going to show the winner, just like it did before.

12 million top 5 combined views for Broforce.
4.9 million top 5 combined views Action Henk.
788,000 top 5 combined for Android Assault Cactus.

I played a little bit of Action Henk last night and it is a Joe Danger type racing game that isn't anything to be excited about yet. I haven't played AAC yet but it seems like the best game. People have bad taste.

I am still astonished that this won over Action Henk and Assault Android Cactus.

Broforce seems a lot better than Action Henk even in its broken state.

My PS4 was downloading a patch yesterday evening. Did it fix any of the previous mentioned issues? Didn't have the chance to try it out after the update.

I haven't tried it but patch notes are:
-Fixed Japanese localization.
-Improved overall multiplayer object syncing.

This could improve the slow down/latency issue I'm assuming.
It's too bad that this game is having all these hiccups, I still enjoy playing it though.

Yeah, the framerate is bad, but not as irritating as wall jumping not working properly.

It's supposed to be climbing. The hint is the climbing tools.

My friend and I still have issues joining each other for co-op. It's frustrating. I can't join his game at all. The level will start, but it will just be empty and I am not able to see my character or his character either. I can't even press start or do anything because nothing works. We tried it again with me being the host and starting the campaign all over again, and level 1 was unplayable. Our session wasn't synced at all and it wasn't until the second level where things finally smoothed out. Even then, my friend still kept getting disconnected every once in a while and I'd have to reinvite him. It's definitely a very frustrating experience, which sucks because when the game works, it's a lot of fun.

yeah that patch helped alot lat night. not so much with the controllers losing sync, or bad internet connections... but maps and enimies were all in the proper places and not a scrambled mess of a kill screen...

Just played the new patch in single player. Still runs like garbage. Delay at start of level, erratic frame rate etc.

ALSO -- as someone who grew up with 8bit games -- THEY DID NOT LOOK LIKE THIS. If you're going to do "8bit retro" "pixel graphics" then FINISH the damn job and add the necessary filters and scanline emulation to make it look authentic. There is plenty of source code out there in MAME and other emulators to help you do it right. 8bit and 16bit games were NOT played on modern LCD/plasma screens, and the pixels were soft with rounded edges.

I also just bought Assault Android Cactus, so now I have a good indie game to play instead.

Don't blame me I voted for AAC.

Pitiful they would release it in this state, even worse Sony would highlight it by offering it as the flagship Plus game for March

Sony keeps allowing for messy, unoptimized games to launch as PS+ titles. Grow Home, Apotheon, Ether One, etc.

I almost expect that if a game is launching as a PS+ title that it will run assy for a while until it gets patched

I'm really enjoying it so far, playing couch co-op. We are in area 8, about halfway through the game I think. Haven't played online. Performance is pretty choppy at times, and controls can become unresponsive. Even with the technical issues we are still having fun. I hope we'll be able to complete the game, and that it doesn't become an unplayable mess by the end.

I was watching the video expecting it to hit single digits, and I'm guessing it does at some point later in the game.

Huh? Why does it HAVE to be a authentic 8-bit look? Why cant we have crisp pixel art? Game looks sharp and fine as it is. It doesnt require any filters to look better. Its not really going for an authetic 8 bit feel anyways. since I don't recall any 8bit or 16bit game processing so much physics and particles. It is authetic in the frame rate slow down though.

It is a pain in the arse when you simply can't move your "bro" at the beginning of the stage... How many deaths did I have due to this issue...

Its been out a little while now.

Has the developer shown even a slight sign they are going to fix this mess?

Heck I would nearly want Sony to remove it from PSN and offer a replacement game for PS+ suers.

Indeed

So is the main problem of Unity that it just sucks at running multi-threaded? Or is Broforce's engine just heavily reliant on single core?

At this point I feel like Sony should work with Unity to improve the engine's performance on PS4, or at least make it easier to resolve common performance issues, as some games do manage to run fine.

On one hand it's not their obligation to help fix Unity's issues, but on the other, Unity's not going anywhere and indie developers are going to keep using it. It's clear there's some fundamental issues that need to be resolved.

It would be interesting is Digital Foundry reached out to the developers who have Unity games that DO run well on PS4 to find out why they succeeded where so many failed.

It looks like a game I could enjoy but that framerate is a fucking disgrace.

Is it better on PC?

It's pretty bad there too. Framerate is the smallest issue on PC, the multiplayer is buggiest thing I have ever played to completion.

Here: I copied this from one Steam review:
However, in its current state, there are things that are really not supposed to be in a good and popular game. Especially when a game is definitely marketed towards the idea of a multiplayer co-op gameplay instead of a single-player campaign.

1. The insane amount of lag and freezes the moment you start up a multiplayer with its online mode is devastating. Sometimes before the level starts, other players are loaded in first and gets right into action before you are loaded. So you sort of just 'wake up' to a chaos where you are not even on the screen, or already dead. Other times it just glitch out other characters. This entire experience is made worse by the next issue.

2. Camera. If it's a 2D game, I don't see why is it that you can't just zoom out from your current field of vision to include all bros in the screen. While I much prefer to have each character their own camera (which wouldn't work on a local set up, I know), but at least you should have the bros within the camera view so players know what they are doing and where they are? A 2D platforming game that really nails how the camera works I know is probably BattleBlock Theater. On missions that timing and precision is the key, having a camera that refuses to work is just frustrating.

3. Input delay. I read some of the other reviews here and noticed that this issue has been here before the game was even 'released'. If there's 1-3 second of a delay from inputs on players other than the host on the overworld map, it really shows how horribly compiled the netcode is.

4. Interface. I am not saying that the design of the interface, but rather, their functions. For online mode as a start. Regardless of how many player has joined the 'lobby', if any one of them were to hit ready, the game would proceed to start with only a 3 second count down. To top that off, any player who 'readies' first becomes the player 1 -- which contains some advantages that only further maps out how buggy this game can get. I don't think it's that difficult to assign players to a slot and only have the game starts when everyone is ready. Risk of Rain does that, BattleBlock Theater does that. I don't see this current system as very effective... or rather, even good. If you enter the wrong game room and was dragged into the actual game, trying to quit would lead to the next problem.

5. Some functions just doesn't work. Yes, that's right. I guess your bros just refuses to let you 'drop out' from the game despite the game menu offers you that option. If you hit 'drop out' instead of 'return to menu' when you are in the online game, you will freeze your game.

6. Player 1. Well, player 1 has it okay, but if you are playing multiplayer as player 2/3/4, you are pretty much screwed when you want to run around witih a mech. To put it simply, you have to jump out of your mech from time to time or else the game would register you as AFK (not player 1 though!) and just boot you out from the battle field. So you could be carrying your bros and then suddenly your control is taken away from you and you drag your teammate to hell -- without even having the intention of doing so. This hilarity of a bug even comes with you still able to control the mech if you are marked as AFK, except the camera no longer tilts to you, and you can no longer exit the mech.
I encountered all of those issues and it seems people who praise it only have played singleplayer and that's it.

Played it for an hour today (fully updated) and man does this game run like horse shit and its ruining my fun with it.

From the glitches of player movement to the slowdown everytime theres a couple of explosions (which is all the time in this game). It just performs real sloppy and its a shame. It would be far more enjoyable if it ran as solid as something like Assault Android Cactus (sorry, I had to mention it).

Before the patch, I was able to host a game with 2 people locally and 2 people on PSN. Since the patch, it doesn't allow for 2 local players in an online game. Not sure if it's a bug with the latest patch, or a fix to prevent simultaneous local and online.

and yeah, the performance is still hot garbage. shame.

In what I believe was the final level,
after beating satan's third form, instead of turning into the little head that chases you he just turned into the head and didn't move. I couldn't do anything and had to just quit the level. Pretty frustrating as you can imagine.

Also, is there no level select or a way to a way to play past levels out of order? I don't see any level editor so I'm assuming that was dropped for the console version too. Overall a fun game but an incredibly disappointing port.

same thing happened to me

Stop fucking putting the camera shake back to 100% its pissing me off now. Stay at 0% damnit. I keep forgetting to check it when I play. Also what a dumb idea that I can only get to options from the main menu. Along with the delay at start of levels, I'm getting irked. Sucks beacuse I really enjoy the game otherwise.

Go to options put camera shake to 0% scroll down and watch the percentage rise back up again. Its maddening ahhhhh. It seems dumb but camera shake makes me really sick like i'll borderline puke.
