Building the "Must Have" Collection...

I'm working with a local community college on trying to get some game development classes. Anyway, the school's library has asked for a list of "Must Have" games that students would be able to check out. Handed in a preliminary list already, but know I forgot some.

I turn to you GAF, "What games should the library buy?"

For what system?

If you're going to study design, then it's probably just either the first or best examples of genres...

like for fps, Wolfenstein 3D and then... Half-Life 2, maybe.

3D platformer, Mario 64 and then... I dunno for current.

Or are you trying to scam some free games? :p

Midway Arcade Treasures, the recent 80-game Atari Anthology, and a good Activision Anthology are all essential. Some Namcomuseum titles and the Capcom anthology are needed too. Compilations in general give you the best bang for your buck as far as game design goes.

I'm assuming the library standard platform is PS2, but it will be odd to have an "essential gaming" library with no Mario/Zelda/Metroid.

The document of Metal Gear Solid 2

But this is a difficult question, because someone in game development courses will probably have all the big ones already. I would suggest those at the fringes of artistic accomplishment (Rez, SOTC, Ico, Killer 7, etc...) just to expose people to those kinds of games.

guilty gear xx #r is a textbook examples of how to build balance into your games (through shared defensive systems), and starcraft is important because ... well, it's ****ing starcraft.

all MGS games, all FF games, all GTA games. and Crazy Frog Racer.

Very good, but needs more Katamari. And Fire Emblem.

it'd be helpful if you told us what that preliminary list is.

A bunch of obscure games and some bad ones would be a lot more useful for discussions rather than top sellers like MGS and FF which students would most likely have already played.

Here's a short list of some games we discussed in a game design class :

Devil Dice : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Devil_Dice
Batman : Dark Tomorrow
Phantasy Star Online
Dark Angel : http://www.gamespot.com/ps2/rpg/darkangelvampireapocalypse/review.html?sid=2809177&q=Dark Angel
God of War
Obscure : http://www.gamespot.com/pc/action/obscure/index.html?q=Obscure

This isn't broad at all.

Throw in Doom, Quake, Quake 2, and the Virtua Fighter games. If only as technological showpieces.

yeah, people are just posting games they like or were "blockbuster hits".

what about milestone games which were the first to do something that's now common place in games today, or games that defined a new genre in their time?
