It also helps knowing that this is what Jason Jones has been tucked away doing for the past couple of years.
I had that observation in my post but seem to have pasted over it when I re-arranged it. That has a LOT to do with why I'm so interested. He's had a sizable team working on this since Bungie split from MS in 2007.

The amount of simulation running under the hood of the Halo engine has always made me want to see it applied to a larger, less linear world. I'll admit an MMO wasn't what I had in mind, but I suspect Bungie knows what it's doing.

Even the giants can fall. Have a Plan B, Bungie, just to be sure. You tread in risky waters.
This is true, but I think they've made it clear they put all their eggs in this basket. I wonder how the 10-year contract handles the situation of the first title in the franchise under-performing. It's got to be a mix of exhilaration and anxiety at Bungie, free from Halo but with an uncertain future.

So the MMO part of this story appears to be true. I wonder if it's the same for the contractor firing part, regardless of what Bungie's actually said?

(I have no opinion either way - I just love speculation)

A GOOD fps mmo could be a fucking blast to play if done correctly.

Absolutely. Even a somewhat middling attempt like SOE had with Planetside was a refreshing twist on the both the shooter and mmo genre. I'm confident Bungie can do better.

I can see it now.

Raid Leader: "Guys keep the tank up, KEEP THE TANK UP!!"

Time Keeping Raider: "Its going to enrage! 10 seconds!"

Raid Leader: "Not on my watch. Dps the hell out of this thing!!"

Random Raider: "We got this guys! We got this! Boss health at 2%!"

Time Keeping Raider: "Enrage in 5 seconds!"

Raid Leader: "Pour it on guys! DPS, DPS, DPS!!! We're soooo close!"

*Raid Boss engages armor lock*

Well fuck that, I'm not paying another monthly fee to play a game on top of my current Gold subscription I pay to play games.

I'm really interested to see what they have coming, as others have mentioned, this project is the creation of Jason Jones, but there's no way I'm adding to my monthly fee compilation. >.>

I WANT all of their eggs in one basket.

Because that's what it takes to pull something of this size off.

If I had to compile a list of what's neccessary to create the next WoW on consoles, a realization of a mega-game on consoles that sucks in the monstrous numbers of the fps consumer--it would be the following:

1. Multi-platform
2. A team that can produce a dizzying media storm
3. A team that is beyond talented
4. All-in. You can't spare any resource.

And from what I can see that's whats happening with this title and I couldn't be more hyped as a result.

My only concern is that the current engine--Reach included, doesn't seem to be of the sort of quality that I'd suspect would be necessary to run an MMOFPS.

There's no doubt that Bungie know how to polish a game though. You simply don't worry about bugs with Bungie released games--ridiculous mod-enhanced Halo 2 bullshit withstanding, but there's no doubt that they have to go above and beyond whatever limits that Halo Reach produced.

two HUGE downsides of a mmo

1. most likely no sp campaign

2. monthly fee

thats why people are going crazy and they totally have the right to do so

400 ms points a month.

Use Bing search bar - free month.

Put me on pay roll, I'm solving all your console problems.

this will be an interesting thread to revisit after reveal and after launch :)

If it's good, this might be the first MMO I play. I have a lot of faith in Bungie, after their Halo series. Well, might be the first, want to see how the Star Wars mmo pans out first.

Color me crazy, but I'm excited to learn more. Love Bungie and the last MMO FPS I played was Planetside which was a ton of fun in its prime.

What other primarily-console developers have attempted an MMO and how has it gone? I'm drawing a blank besides Realtime Worlds (R.I.P.)

Square Enix made a couple of FF MMOs. I'm not sure of the quality of the games, but I think they have a decent # of subs, at least enough to sustain operations and turn a profit. I'm not sure if we should count Phantasy Star Online as an MMO, but they were charging $10/month for it. That's all I can think of.

Wouldn't mind a good fps mmo, however a monthly fee on top of an xbl fee would be tough to stomach on principle alone

Maybe we'll see something more along the lines of what was done with the Guild Wars model. Release multiple, f2p standalone games that still find a way to qualify as MMOs. That would be perfectly acceptable.

After Reach, I don't think I can stomach another campaign from Bungie, great multiplayer but their story telling needs much improvement. Maybe thats why they are just focusing on what they know best, mp

I'm too busy to play an MMO, let alone pay for one

For me I think a good FPS MMO would facilitate short bursts of play and not rely solely on the long grind fest gameplay that is typical of say WoW

Putting everything in one basket is such a brilliant business move. Why didn't I think of that before?

it really could be the next big thing. bungie has an excellent track record, and i have been sick of WoW for ages now.

I'm down as well but then again my best friend was addicted to Planetside and got me to try which I found fun. I don't even mind paying if I feel I get my cash worth of updates, service, and support. I've been done for a while now just paying for live though, and I understand why people won't pay for both. I wouldn't either.

Also the FPS thing makes me think this and WoW really won't have much effect on each other.

I, for one, am not opposed to this at all.

I am, however, opposed to paying a monthly fee just to play one game, so there's that. No matter how mind blowing the game might turn out to be, I couldn't imagine myself paying $10+/month, especially with the amount of great games coming out all the time, and on top of my XBL subscription.

So PC exclusive? Or will it be the first multiplatform MMO that allows PC, PS3, and 360 players to interact (when hell freezes over).

Nice. I can't wait to find out more. Bungie has honestly never let me down yet so I bet I'll love it.

This is a good sign though. Hopefully we could get a teaser at E3 or something. I can dream can't I?

Indeed. It's one of the reasons I was glad to see the first map pack for Reach be their last. Bungie gets the full studio resources - aside from the handful supporting Reach's online component - working on the new IP, and 343i gets to put out user content using the Halo engine as a warm up for their first Halo game. It's a win-win.

Hate on me but if your getting free content update and patches ala wow then the one thing out of that list that seems to be fucking you the most isn't an MMO... XBL I'm looking at you...

It is console from what their job listing show. PS3 and Xbox 360. I highly doubt either platform provider would allow cross play between platforms.

Good point. Take WOW as an example. You get so much content wise from the game it's worth it. Also there is no law that says they have to charge, much less charge 15 bucks a month. It could be free to play, subscription, or a combo of the two. Also if it is subscription based that doesn't mean it has to be 15 bucks a month although I'd put money on it being that if it is subscription based.

So basically I'm just saying let's wait and see before you worry about it.

You haven't even seen it yet.
How do you know I haven't seen it?
I haven't..

What I meant is I can't imagine a MMO FPS from anybody being massively successful (although we don't know if it will be an FPS or not). Not in the long run anyhow, Bungie's name should give it a good starting point.

I figured the new Star Wars MMO would be my first, and still do but this definitely has my attention now. I have plenty of faith in Bungie not putting out a product that isn't up to Halo's standards as far as solid controls and excellent MP.

I don't want it. If it turns out good, I will remain indifferent. If it turns out to be a rip-off, I will develop contempt.

Quote me, along with a bunch of others, after it is revealed and giggle all you like.

I'm going to make the prediction that the game is going to be a hybird mmofps-rts type game.

At least that's what i would do.

single player missions. (all fps)
over world quests

co-op and 4 player missions. (all fps)
overworld group quests

5 player missions. (four fps, 1 rts commander, etc unil like 16 players 4 commanders)
instanced quests, raids, multiplayer.

resource gathering for the commander comes from player kills, which in turn allows the commander to purchase buffs, heals and other support for players.
