Bungie insists Destiny remains on track despite composer exit

I literally remember people thinking the game should be delayed cause marty is gone.

It was crazy

I remember it also, albeit figuratively.

The soundtrack is generally not something you want to finish late in production because the designers still have to implement the music in the game, and that is going to be very hard if they don't have a finished (or close to finished) version to work with. And, I mean, Bungie might be stupid for firing one of the most high-profile music composers in the video game industry, but I seriously doubt they're stupid enough to do it at a time when it would affect the ship date of the game.

... why does it matter that some composer has left?
Aren't there other composers?

The longtime and well known composer and audio team lead for Bungie was fired ~5 months before the game they'd been working on for several years was released. I'd explain why that matters but I think it's kind of self-explanatory.

Because talent matters. When someone important leaves or is removed from a game studio things tend to go downhill.

Not sure how important a composer can be in a video game like this.
There's probably several hundred more important positions relating to the stuff that is actually the game (graphic designers, coders, etc).
I highly doubt this will affect the quality of the game in the slightest, so I just don't see why it has seemingly blown up into another -gate.

Obviously not, but I question if they'll be intelligent enough to find them if they were dumb enough to fire this guy.

Edit: Okay maybe that's too harsh, but I still can't believe they'd do such a crazy thing.

Maybe they finally found his Twitter account

Because for many, myself included, Marty O'Donnell has had the ability to turn an awesome game into an unforgettable experience. His departure will not affect Destiny, true, but it will affect whatever comes out of Bungie after Destiny.

Didn't Marty also do other tasks within the sound design realm? It's not like he just sat around for 3 years and then wrote something at the last minute.

I've come to notice something the past 6 months or so. All of my favorite games typically also have all of my favorite game sound tracks. So there has to be something to that, right?

Also to be brutally honest I've never found Borderlands to be a very good game. Something about it just makes it so boring to play in long stretches.

Fair enough to the first, just a different strokes to different folks. I couldn't give you a list of game soundtracks that stand out to me, never buy game soundtracks etc. It's just not something I actively pay attention to. But I realize others do.

As for Borderlands, I'd agree and that was part of my point. I don't like these co-op designed shooters much in single player as they feel empty and boring (though maybe Destiny will be different).

So I'm always playing with someone, and chatting away during any boring parts. That makes the game a lot more fun, but makes the music even less relevant for me since it's being talked over anyway a lot of the time.

We are hurtling towards September 9th. We are on final approach.

For you, that means the floodgates are about to burst wide open. Earlier this week, we cracked the lid on our pre-alpha build for a few dozen journalists. We nervously hovered, hoping what they saw and played lived up to their expectations for us. We huddled in the aftermath, wondering what they’ll tell you about what we’ve been up to – about the promises we’ve made.

You’ll be hearing from them soon. They’ll be loaded with shiny new assets. It will mark the beginning of your true introduction into the world of Destiny. We hope, more than anything, that you love what you see.

Pre-Alpha itself is just a beginning. It leads us into Alpha proper, and you into Beta, but it’s already keeping us up late into the night. Though we’re bleary-eyed and exhausted with the day-to-day challenge of keeping Destiny ON TRACK, the tiny sampling offered by our Pre-Alpha is already hugely motivating. For many of us, especially those who have never had the opportunity to see what it’s like to ship a new IP, it’s been downright monumental – a testament to what this team is truly capable of and the foundation, we hope, for a game experience we can all feel proud to put our name on and shout, “I made that!”

No Mail Sack this week. We know what you want to ask us. We wish we could help you make sense of what’s going on. Sometimes saying nothing is the only right thing to do. Sometimes saying nothing is the hardest thing to do.

We’re sorry for that. We know that you care a lot about our shared history. We do too. It stings to read some of the more charged, emotional responses, but we understand, and we are committed to focusing on our shared future. We believe it will be bright.

Apology seems sincere. Looks like we might hear some impressions...*Gasp* soon.

That's a much better response, and it's better late than never. Though I don't even think we can count today as "late". I'm sure there's a lot of sad feelings in the studio over Marty being fired. I hope it doesn't hurt the general morale of the studio too much.

And I've said it before and I'll say it again: I really hope the new previews shows PvP!

To be fair, as mediocre as Halo 4's soundtrack was, it would've been miles better with better placement and mixing.

That's not necessarily the composer but the audio guys who carefully implement it, carefully mix it, carefully master it, then slap Waves L1 on the final mix to make it all louder.

That said, I'd love Marty to contribute to future Halo titles, even if its just someone else doing new versions of some his classics, like this

In other news, why has Bungie not released any info on which typefaces they have decided to incorporate into the Destiny UI? THIS IS THE REAL IMPORTANT QUESTION.

Doesn't surprise me, I mean the game is coming out this year. Doesn't make it any less disappointing, though. Especially with the "decade long franchise" thing. Future Bungie games will be lesser experiences without Marty's music.

Still excited for Destiny, but it's still a bummer.

That was when Destiny was going to be released this Spring. Now that Destiny is coming out September 9th, the beta is schedule for this summer. They haven't been more specific than that, but some people think they've hinting at a May beta, though I'm dubious about that.

I expect new trailer at E3 with beta date.

Hope the previews are soon, like next week soon. It'll be great to finally get a sense for what on earth it is that we're going to be doing in this game. So far it's been 99% talk. Hoping the journalists have a sense for how the game plays.

This can't be serious. Does it really matter if James Cameron makes the next avatar? There are plenty of other composers. Does it really matter if nintendo makes the next zelda or mario? There are plenty of other devs. You can make countless other examples. Of course it matters when someone with a lot of talent is lost from a game.

One of the things that bungie games are so well known for are their fantastic soundtracks

What type of game would it be more important for?

Well that's your opinion. In mine the soundtrack is one of the most important aspects of a game. Basically all my favorite games have great OST's and that's not a coincidence.

.Edit: I doubt it will really affect the game this far into development but it certainly has an impact on their future titles for me.

Hope BETA is free and not some bull shit "buy this game " to access it.
You just need to pre-order the game to play the beta. You can pre-order on Amazon right now, get the code via email, and then cancel your pre-order if you want.

Bungie has explained a lot about the game, they've just done it really poorly. Disjointed bits and pieces that -- individually -- fail to make the game sound compelling. They really need to focus their messaging.

Maybe they finally found his Twitter account

After what happened to Mozilla's CEO, I wonder if the Bungie's board felt that Marty's political views could possibly harm their reputation in the future. This sort of thing is becoming more and more common when individuals fail to subscribe to a company's/board of directors' political views.

Do people really care that much about music in a primarily co-op game? I mean I know people play them solo, but stuff like Borderlands is a gazillion times more fun with friends. And with all the chatting in that type of gaming I'm not paying much attention to the game sounds anyway.

That's just me though, I don't pay much active attention to scores in games/movies/shows anyway.

It doesn't even have to be during the game. I played the first halo co-op but that opening menu music always got me in the mood for some halo. It was so epic. Music has a huge impact on games and movies. It can make or break it sometimes. Even if you don't realize it. But in halo it was a huge part in setting the mood of each new scene

bummer I was starting to get a bit hyped for this game... now not so much. Last gen holds the games back too much...

OT I imagine Activision has a few for them to choose from.

Yeah im not too excited about the cross-gen situation, but with "over 500 people" working on it, I hope each respective platform gets all the love and polish it needs. REALLY hoping for 60fps on PS4, but seeing that the E3 demo was running @ 30fps, I'm not so sure I should hold my breath on it.

Can't wait for this game but Marty will be missed. Remember, there's other talent out there...

it has to start somewhere right?
