Bungie's cancelled annoucement: No one's angry, just laughs

"Sure they're disappointed. Any software creator would be disappointed," Mattrick, boss of the Xbox 360 business, told Eurogamer at E3 for an exclusive interview set to run later this week.

"Harold [Ryan, Bungie president] just laughed and he said, 'Boy, just a sign of growth inside the business, we agree'."

Pressed on the decision to pull the new Halo title from the E3 briefing, Mattrick said: "We didn't feel we needed to show Halo to have a great show, to pay homage to our core audience, to have a lot of news, so it was an embarrassment of riches and we couldn't fit it in. How great is that? I think that's awesome."

Microsoft will host an event "another time of the year that'll go deep on Halo", Mattrick explained.

"So that's what we're going to do and I think we're smart. I had so many people come to me and say 'look at that, that's a measure of growth and maturity of Microsoft - the fact that you have the best show, the best collection of products and you didn't even have to show Halo'."

Mattrick wouldn't be drawn on the contents of the game itself, but said there's "an ongoing work-stream with Bungie and others" on "all kinds of new things in development".

"It's awesome, it's highly anticipated, it's friggin' Halo! People love it, right? I can't say a lot about it.

"We're going to create an opportunity where people can interact with it, we think it's going to be super high quality, super fun, super innovative; it's the easiest thing for us to message, so stay tuned. There's lots of good news on that."

It's friggin' Halo guys!

More like they didn't want this new Halo game to be a huge shadow over the rest of the line-up. Even Gears of War 2 would be forgotten if a new Halo was announced there.

Absolutely, the last thing they want to do is overshadow everything they announced for the rest of 2008 (and RE5 :p) with a game that in all likelihood is a Q4 2009 title.

It'll be shown in due time, and I'd rather that when they are ready to show it they have a wealth of material with which to show off the game, rather than a brief teaser or a product outline.

It's time to fire boring Mattrick, and bring back Peter Moore! Or if that's not an option, make J Allard the Xbox figurehead (with hoodie plz).

I think its infinitely depressing Bungie is making another Halo game. Just from the way Mattrick is talking about Bungie its like "Oh, theyre the Halo guys, right?".

I wonder what happened to that Halo Chronicles thing and why its still not been shown. I had simply assumed that between Halo Wars and the Peter Jackson thing, the Halo base would be covered while Bungie had a chance to make something new.

Return of the X0 events? Hopefully.

Lets hope so. I want to see even just a new trailer of Alan wake or something!. I figured they missed last year because they didn't want to spend more money than they already were with other things going on.

I suspect Mattrick isn't being entirely truthful.

As much as I would agree, I don't think it would be in Don's best interests to piss off Bungie again, I wonder if once Bungie have fulfilled their part of the contract Microsoft, they'll be off to multi-platform land.

Lol. Hay guyz. Let's jump to conclusions. I'm going to log in on Microsoft's super secret message boards for MVPs and resign!!!111

As much as I loathed Halo 3 (felt that it was a bit of a dissapointment to be honest), I'm still really interested in this new Halo title. I really don't think it'll be Halo 4; perhaps an entirely different Halo altogether. I can't wait for this announcement.

The funny thing is that by announcing the announcement then pulling it, they pretty much announced a Halo game without giving away any details at all. So despite what Mattrick believes, he did announce a Halo game. Paradox complete. :lol

Before the E3 announcement was canceled, Bungie had been teasing that there would also be a special event or announcement at PAX. It may be affected now because of the cancellation. Luke has hinted at otherwise but after this I'm going to remain pessimistic.

Man, I like Don Mattrick, though. I hadn't seen neither hide nor hair of the guy until E3, and when he came out and started the show, I felt like while he wasn't as dynamic a personality as Peter, he came off as a nice guy who actually cared about games. Now, towards the end, I really wanted to question why we spent so much time on a couple of games that are directed at an audience they don't have, but still Mattrick came off as a good guy to me.

This is just a show for the public, I read on here that everyone at Bungie now hates Microsoft because of this!

I know that this is sarcasm, but I do think that it is a show for the public.
Bungie might not have burnt copies of Vista in their office in retaliation but I somehow doubt that the president of Bungie would just "laugh" if he was told that the announcement he'd been preparing was cancelled 2 days after the teaser was put online.

yes but i dont want halo karts .

i want halo 4 :(

Totally stupid for him to say it was a halo game. Thats still announcing it lol. I do agree that it would have over shadowed alot of the other stuff they announced and they didnt need it in comparison to nintendo and sony

It's MGS all over again.

Kojima: MGS 2 will be my last! sorry, i meant 3! duh, 4... maybe.

Just replace MGS with Halo and Kojima with Bungie.

I hope they put on a X0 show this year.
Quite frankly I think the industry would be better off cancelling E3 and each company put on it's own show to showcase what they have.
I hope there is an X08, I still have daydreams of X06

Bungie never said they were done with Halo. Quite the opposite. What they did say was that Halo 3 finished the story arc which began with Halo. And it did.

Mattrick seems to have missed Ryan's memo. I didn't get laughter or lightheartedness from the tone of the Bungie frontpage post pull.

This guy sounds like he's slugging back whiskey while talking to the interviewer. I imagine him flailing his arms and hiccuping while delivering such gems as:
