Bungie's Next Project - 'New Halo 3 Campaign Experience'

Domino Theory said:
Which Halo 3 thread were you reading? No one's bitching at anyone who gets dissapointed by the teaser. Bungie has told us "download the teaser for our next game." A proper full-reveal trailer will be out in due time, so hold your judgement until that arrives; you shouldn't be expect a lot from a teaser.

We weren't even supposed to know about a "planned" teaser trailer being revealed at E3, or the fact that Bungie's next project was 'Halo related', thanks to Mattrick. We were supposed to continue speculating that Bungie's SI was an XBLA game that has the player control a green plumber.

It's the canned E3 announcement that turned us Bungie fans' perspective on the whole situation.

Even after all this, a Halo 3 campaign 'expansion' is still coming as a complete shock to me because I didn't think Bungie would expand the final game like the way they've been doing. It seems they're going all out with Halo 3 and I fucking love it.

Don't forget, bungie also had said a while back that they hadn't planned on a campaign expansion or something along those lines.

Really? Any chance you can dig that up?

I think it was in one of the updates when they had out the the award acceptance video and people thought about AI, giant map maker, and I thought they also talked about campaign extension or something, not sure if I can find it though and I could be wrong all together.

I wasn't a big fan of the graphics for the Halo 3 campaign for a long time but I now think it's all pretty stunning in its own way. Slight framerate drops in MP still annoy me though.

If Halo 3 was 60fps it would completely dominate the market as far as engines go. (IMO)

I think they meant more along the lines of Half Life expansion backs where the episode content plays the story forward.

No, they only said there wouldn't be a disc based campaign expansion.

EDIT:

Scratch that, I mixed it up:

IGN: There's a new Halo 3 campaign achievement going up with this title update. Are there any plans to add new content to the campaign with this update or future ones?

Jarrard: We're always looking at ways to further expand and improve the Halo 3 experience, but there are currently no plans for an update to add new campaign content.

That means it will be disc based, stupid me :-(

Okay, noticed this earlier but have since expanded the search:

I can't find a single Microsoft site promoting this teaser. Major Nelson, Xbox.com, Gamerscoreblog... all of them have skipped the news. And Major Nelson made a post *after* the reveal asking people to give him travel game suggestions of all things.

Anyone else getting an odd vibe from Microsoft on this?

yeah, but they've got to realize that alot of their fans miss alot of info that comes out. alot of them never knew about mattrick's comment that another halo is coming. they don't pore over all the little bits of info coming from the internet. and alot of people with little more than a "superficial interest" are their fans. anybody who spotted the superintendent, which wasn't difficult considering he was all over bnet, and was waiting for a new bungie ip reveal and just finds it's more halo 3 is probably disappointed.

We've been getting a weird vibe from MS since the start of this whole thing. That said, I think you are reading too much into that.

I think some of you forget that its ok to be disappointed and still excited. The two aren't mutually exclusive.

I, for one, would be less excited if it turns out you're playing as other Spartans.

In that case, I would expect that it's 'merely' a standard expansion pack -- essentially unchanged from Halo 3 only with the addition of some new single player levels.

Sure, that would be cool, but if it's ODSTs, there's a better chance it's a whole new game with new mechanics and maybe even a change of perspective. That's more exciting to me.

Either way, I hope Bungie doesn't keep us guessing too long before they start to clue us in.

Well it could always be the converse as well. Perhaps you are looking for this Spartan Maddie/Linda in the campaign. Once found perhaps you even complete campaign missions with her as well.

that's because everybody that frequents the halo thread is in damage control mode right now, because bungie can do no wrong to them.
:lol

The thread I read where everyone bitches endlessly about BR starts, multiplayer just not having the same "feel" as Halo 2, Cortana being an abortion of a level, team snipers not being a playlist, Last Resort being a team slayer map, and the multiplayer maps being a huge disappointment must be... I don't know... The Non-Official Halo 3 Thread, I guess.

sixthsubset said:
in this thread, they're acting like nobody has the right to be disappointed in getting a little teaser trailer for another halo game after a three month long tease with a little green animated character, which didn't look to fit with the halo universe. which is ridiculous.
What, you mean after the transmission that was posted on the front page of Bungie.net that revealed that SI was part of the Halo universe it's unreasonable to say that anyone who wasn't thinking that this would be Halo-related was uninformed and had unrealistic expectations? Give me a break.

apparently people expect every single game announcement to include pics, videos, playable impressions, a developer walkthrough and a downloadable demo from day 1. Its just a fucking teaser. If your only complaint is that you are disappointed by that, its your own goddamn fault.
Considering how butthurt Bungie seemed about the E3 reveal being pulled, I expected a demo on Live by now, honestly.

I hope bungie decided to just stick it to the man and announce the expansion randomly, thus currently creating a "we dont comment on spec or rumors" comment from MS.

In all seriousness though I don't think Bungie even needs MS to put their stamp of approval on an announcement. It is odd they have not said anything though.

-----------------------------

I don't know if this has been speculated or not in this thread but how sweet does this sound?

-New Halo 3 campaign expansion
-New multiplayer map pack featuring 6 new levels
-Bonus content in the form of armor types and videos

MSRP - $24.99

You guys really need to lighten up. A lot of people may play Halo but not everyone knows what the hell UNSC stands for or other Halo universe references thrown into the tease. And not everyone follows this shit as religiously as other people. So is it really all that unrealistic to have an expectation that maybe Bungie was going to break the mould and move on from their cash cow that they've been milking for the last few years? Also, remember that the SI stuff was certain to be a new IP just until a few days before the announcement when the UNSC stuff came to the know.

Wouldn't you be a little pissed off if you prepared something and hyped your fanbase for an announcement and your publisher ripped it away at the very last minute? Of course you wouldn't understand, look at your retarded comment.

You sure? Isn't this what the E3 fuss was about in the first place - that MS didn't want Bungie to go ahead with their reveal.

Sir Fragula said:
What does that have to do with my post? It was an observation. Where was there even a hint of sobbing anger? You fail.

Nah I'm sorry for calling you out like that but you're sounding like some paranoid kid that just wants a hit at MS because you think they should have treated Bungie like a pal rather than a business partner at E3. Conspiracy nut.

This isn't bungie's next game though, it's an expansion.

Sorry you misunderstood me, I meant it as in they can do anything now without MS running their hype marketing machine.

Pretty cool teaser, although it kinda lost some of it's impact by having the information leaked months in advance. This is basically confirming the GameSpot leak (which is fine by me).

I loved the ODST's and thought they were underutilized in the campaigns of both H2 and H3 (only like two levels each), so it's exciting to have something focused on them.

hope tomorrows update is juicy!

the teaser wasnt all that great IMO, but the ideas for what its hinting at have me very excited! ODSTs? a return to halo 2 battles versus elites? "episodic content"? cant wait to hear more

There was a gamspot leak? Enlighten me please! Your not referring to Matrick spilling the beans, no?

Its old and been linked linked in this thread multiple times, the article was only a pre-E3 rumor of a 'grittier' (lol) squad based shooter in the Halo 'verse developed by Bungie. Doesn't say much else.

BakedPigeon said:

It was a "rumor" from E3, it seems like a Bungie employee was pissed the announcement was held back and spilled the beans to GameSpot. Here's the link, it was right on the money:

However, a source with knowledge of the studio's development slate told GameSpot a different story. She or he said that sometime this year, Bungie will announce a "darker, grittier" Halo game that doesn't feature the Master Chief at all.

According to the source, the new Halo game will be a spin-off that resembles "a cross between Ghost Recon and Gears of War." It will reportedly tell a "less cartoony" and "more bloody, violent, and grim" tale of a battle between UNSC forces and the pan-racial religious empire known as the Covenant. The game's atmosphere was described as similar to that of the live-action Halo shorts directed by South African filmmaker Neil Blomkamp (pictured), who was to helm the now-stalled big-screen adaptation of the game.

The source says that the upcoming Halo game is a tactical shooter that will follow a squad of colonial marines or orbital-drop shock troopers engaged in "intense" fighting on the ground. Gameplay details were scant, other than the fact that it will reportedly let gamers play as an entire squad in co-op mode through the entire campaign. The exact number of co-op players has yet to be finalized, but it could be as high as eight. It is unclear if the new game is the same as the "Halo: Forerunner" project first rumored in 2006.

When it has already been revealed that SI is part of the Halo universe, yes, it's completely uninformed, ignorant, and unrealistic to expect that a tease related to SI will not be set in the Halo universe. I don't know how you can possibly debate that.

Ahhh I remember that. The teaser made it seem like a Halo 3 expansion though, one would assume FPS gameplay but who the fuck knows at this point. I guess we play the waiting game of cock teases.

Don't forget that story actually came out before Microsoft canceled the announcement.

And we still don't know if it's on the money or not. We have no idea if this is an expansion or full title, if it's third-person or first, etc.

However, nothing we saw today refutes it either, and the ODST-centric theme provides that leak with some added credibility, but we still know so little it's impossible to know how accurate it actually is.

I'm hoping it's 100% on the mark.

I just searched the books... can't find this Linda / Maddie reference people are speaking of.

This references Fall of Reach pages 325-329 according to Halopedia, anything in there? Interesting that it says she was presumed dead as well. I cannot find my copy anywhere atm, err.

Linda was aboard the UNSC Pillar of Autumn for a short time until the Battle of Reach began. She was designated as Blue-Two, part of John-117's team to Reach Station Gamma to destroy the unsecured NAV database of ONI's UNSC Circumference. During that mission, James was critically wounded so she and John were forced to enter the station which was filled with Elites and Jackal Rangers. She found the bay and assisted Staff Sergeant Johnson's squad in holding off the Covenant forces long enough to escape. However, as they jumped out of their Pelican to open the bay doors, she was hit by several overcharged bolts from Plasma Pistols and Plasma Rifles which penetrated her armour and flesh all the way to the carbonized bone. One of the globules of plasma hit her in the back of the skull. Linda was then presumed dead.

I'm cautiously optimistic.

But for gods sake when a game (or "new episode) is announced can we get some info on what it is actually going to be?

Right now we are all groping around like fucking moles with no idea what the gameplay is going to be like.

I assume you mean this one? http://halo.wikia.com/wiki/Linda-058

Either way, I can't find any reference to "Maddie" (Or Madeline, or Maddy) in any of the Halo books... though it's possible I missed something.

One thing i really hope for is that there is different classes and that there is a multiplayer component. Also, hopefully the health system is different too

The funny part is, if this is what was to be shown at E3, it would have been perfect for the MS press conference--it wouldn't have upstaged any of the other games because its so little but would have made their future line-up even more appealing. Had this been announced at E3, there would be much less bitching except from the usual trolls and I'm sure the 'OMG FFXIII ON 360' thread would have been just as big--way to fuck up MS.

Yes! Screw those MP maps. I wanted an extension of the campaign all along, because it was too short to begin with.

I'm not asking for gameplay tweaks much, but I do hope they avoid some of the level design flaws of Halo 3, particularly involving the flood. Halo 1 showed how you do it, Bungie, it's not like you don't have a model already.

I really wish this new game is released in less than a year. It's been slim pickings on Xbox 360 this year.

Add the camp complaining about when the teaser was revealed..
  • New Halo 3 chapter teaser, before FFXIII? Why M$..Halo$ i$ more important!!!
  • New Halo 3 chapter teaser, after FFXIII? MSucks doesn't care about third parties, milking Gaylo as expectd!

I worship Halo. Unfortunately, the official Halo 3 has turned into a MP discussion thread long ago.

The separate picture threads were cool though.

Well, when you only have updates mainly for the multiplayer, along with MP maps coming out every few months or so, it's only natural.

It's too bad you don't have Live; co-op would be so much fun with you. :(

And @ your comment on Flood levels in Halo 3, yeah, "Cortana" was pretty bad. "The Library" is an example of a Flood level done right!

If they freezed her, who knows maybe they can thaw her and some how bring her back to life?
