Or.....eat more good old fashioned food to enable muscle growth and recovery!! OMG SCIENCE

If you want to put on weight though, you have to eat a lot, these milkshakes taken between meals take a bit of pressure off the need to prepare food all the time. I'm using some weight gain stuff, it looks like it's helping but I've been going to the gym most days after work, I think it's a combination of the two, I don't think you can get muscle definition from drinking milkshakes but you can put extra bulk on.

same here. I would try them out, but the high levels of fat puts me off.

just like others have posted in the thread, i just use ON 100% whey protein, probably the best bang for your buck when it comes to whey proteins

not to be a hater or w/e, but those guys are pretty much right

taking protein (or any supplement for that matter) for 1 week, and not really working out, i find it hard to believe that you could get any noticeable gains in size or definition

it's not really hating, its just really atypical

I have a question about ON Whey and other Whey Protein supplements in general, about to buy a tub for the first time:

Do the rest of you guys take them on days you don't work out? Liu Kang said he takes them after workouts only.

on days i workout i usually take

2 scoops with breakfast
2 scoops post workout
2 scoops before sleep

on rest days i typically only take
2 scoops with breakfast

Yes. And?

Best tasting protein ever. A really good strong minty taste.
When I first got it, I was really tempted to drink this just for the taste.
The Chcolate and especially the Vanilla are also winners.

I've tried Chocolate, Vanilla and Fruit Punch (BLARGH) Designer Whey and the ON products are superior in taste and protein as well (but just slightly).
Just never get the fruit proteins - I've learned that lesson.

Although protein or no, my results didn't really change. I found just eating regular (good) food helped the most in terms of mass.

Food takes a while to prepare, milkshake doesn't, if you find it hard putting on weight you're meant to stuff yourself with 6-7 meals a day, 2 - 3 shakes can compensate for making chicken sandwiches or something.

Yes. I understand and agree with what you're saying, I'm just not sure why you're telling this to me specifically. :) I take 2-4 services of Whey a day, but I also try my damndest to eat real food instead of drinking it (except post workout w/ table sugar).

Also, it's not that hard to always have chicken or steak available. If you're going to broil a steak for dinner, it's just as easy to broil 4 and eat for the next couple days.

Muscle Milk is godsend.

What I love about it is the fact that I don't need a blender (huge, because I'm lazy as ****). Just dump two scoops in a cup, add milk (**** water), and stir with a spoon.

You don't need a blender for most protein supplements. A shaker normally works just fine.

I was using ON when actively trying to bulk up two years ago. I had to give up on gaining any substantial amount of weight, the volume of food I had to eat put me on the toilet far too often. :lol Was on Myoplex for a bit there too, but my body couldn't adjust to it (farting up a storm even after two weeks). I'll stick with the muscle milk and grab on for post work outs whenever I get back to the gym after my schedule lightens up.

So that'd be what, 600 calories of supplements a day?

You need to work on a normal diet first. As a few people have said in here already, you should only be taking one serving of two scoops of one product on any given day. More than that and you're just a fiend for fake food.

That really depends on how hard you're training and what you're training for.

so whats the difference between whey and soy protein. is soy as good for muscle growth and definition?

they are different and whey is the superior protein, I can't remember the scientific reason why but i used to work at GNC and really research my stuff on bodybuilding and know i came to that conclusion for a good reason.

Final post for now since i am going for three in a row. Musclle milk is good in fact for weight gaining and mucle building it is probably the best, that and cytogainer it just depends on how your body metabolizes on which to take personally. The only concern i had with it is that it contains creatine in it. Not that creatine is bad but it is not supposed to be mixed in any sort of lactose containing drink, since most people mix it with milk, however i have not heard of any problems with their product, personal or otherwise.

I weigh 127 pounds and I've been trying to find a good protein shake that will actually help me with muscle definition and maybe a bit of weight gain. I'm prepared to work out (it'll be a bit limited seeing as though all I own are two dumbells and a barbell with 4 20 pound weights that can go on them) but I just HATE this shit I have right now. Called like Bodytech Tech X Mass shit or whatever. It's pretty poopy, and it's vanilla. So what should you recommend me? This Muscle Milk stuff or that Whey stuff? Flavors?

You should start reading and eating. Legal supplements can assist you in attaining a goal but they won't make you stronger or bigger if you don't have a proper diet and training routine.

If you're new I recommend an eBook called 'Burn the Fat, Feed the Muscle' by Tom Venuto. It's full of great information on nutrition from a bodybuilding perspective. It'll tell you pretty much everything you need to eat whether you're trying to gain mass, or slim down.

If it serves of any help, the Muscle Milk thing really does work.
Wellington went from skin and bones to more defined (and bigger) arms, chest and thighs definition in less than a month. His metabolism is ridiculously high, and as far as we've been together, I have yet to see something work as well as product.

I knew he was doing something, but had no idea all that came from this weird shake powder thing. It's not saggy fat, it's actual hard muscle... it's amazing... *_*
I'm definately encouraging him to continue using it... he's happy, and I'm definately happy , too. :p

Now if I could only find a product that burns fat with the intensity that Muscle Milk makes people gain muscle my life would be perfect. :-/

coincidentally enough, i ran out of protein last night so i stopped at Vitamin Shoppe after work to pick some up and saw that they carried that Chocolate Mint ON whey, so i said WTF and picked some up. Its actually pretty damn cheap, only $15 for the 2 lb jar.

The local shop actually told me: "They don't make the ON Chocolate Mint in 2 lb. sizes."
Damnit I don't want to make a $40 for 5 lbs. plunge, when I don't even know how it tastes.

Believe it or not, but Walmart has a cheap protein drink that has worked better for me than any of the expensive stuff. Somehow they managed to get a pretty good product at a ridiculous price. usually a low price means way worse quality.

Target also has it around the same price.

are the protein drinks displayed in this thread, available in GNC stores?
or do I have to buy them at a Gym such as 24 hr. fitness?

Don't ever go to ****ing GNC.

Order online at dpsnutrition, try the Vitamin Shoppe or Vitamin World if you have them in your town, or look in your phonebook for local supplement shops.

I go to Vitamin Shoppe myself, but what's so bad about GNC?

from my experience GNC has shitty selection. They only really carry one or two brands and tis uaually the most expensive (and their own) stuff.

As a mint connoisseur, trust me it tastes damn good - so good that I felt compelled to type this with one hand as my other is being iced from a swollen, maybe broken knuckle.

The price and how hard they push their own products. The Vitamin Shoppe has their own brand and has great sales on their own shit, but they'll never force it on you. I've seen GNC sell products for $50 that I found for $30 at Vitamin Shoppe. GNC is the Gamestop of supplement shops.

I'd stay away from any vanilla flavors. Every vanilla I have tried of various products has always tasted like shit. Not to say chocolate is much better, but it isn't as bad as vanilla. I think vanilla is too weak of a flavor or something to really overpower the product's inherent shit taste.

The ON vanilla tastes like melted ice cream. Whether that's good or not is up to you. Personally its my #2 flavour.

Wow this has turned into quite the positive conversation.

1. Muscle Milk and Cytogainer are pretty much the same products. Cytogainer has some added calories so that it can be sold in the gainer category. But Muscle Milk was at one time a CtyoSport product until the owner of CytoSports and the creater of Muscle Milk parted ways. Useless knowledge, I know.

2. Muscle Milk has one added benefit over the competition. The added fat. Having protein by itself is not the best way to eat. Protein and carbs or protein and fat, that's how it should be done. Never do high carb and high fat together and you will not gain fat (every situation is subject to all kinds of variables - no statement in this industry is written in stone). The higher fat in Muscle Milk helps support testosterone levels (male hormone). One of the most important things to do for the male body is make sure you making enough testosterone. Higher healthy fats support this. You could drink any protein shake and take approx 3 grams of fish oil too (Slo does this I think).

Drinking 3 shakes a day is not a problem, as long as it's 3 shakes and 3 meals. Really shouldn't be drinking more shakes than you are eating meals. It's a pretty simple rule to live by. But engineered foods are easier to digest and more of the protein actually gets to the muscle to help repair and maintain.

Funny that everyone is in love with ON 100% whey mint. I just threw a 5lb tub out last week cause I just wasn't liking it at all. :lol.

For anyone that doesn't know my history. I worked in the supplement industry for 10 years and distributed ON, San, Xycience, Designer Proteins, NxCare, and some other big name companies. I love ON products. Still have a serving of chocolate a day just because I love the flavour. I never got a chance to work with Champion Nutrition and shill Muscle Milk but I still suggest it to all my internet and real life friends. :D

LOL thanks. I'm generally a fan of mint everything too, so it should be a pretty safe bet.

So do all you guys just mix it in with milk?

You need to add some bannannas, some berries, some yogurt, maybe some flax...then baby, you got a smoothie goin'!

just had some of that ON mint chocolate and it does indeed taste good. Basically tastes like if you took a hot chocolate and stuck it in the fridge for a few hours.

just ordered some of this today, man GAF search is full of answers :)

I'm skinny as hell so I want to gain some pounds but I don't eat as well as I should so I hope not to lose anymore than I have to while workout

"Never do high carb and high fat together "

Is that for whole day or just the meal? I always assumed if your doing fats like nuts, olive oil, etc that rest of day you cant do carbs or is it just few hours? No carbs on workout day would effect my energy.

muscle milk is, by far (imho), the best protien shae available on the market RIGHT now. I remember 15 years ago when met-rx came out...it tasredl ike crap, but wrked really well. then eas came ou with myoplex, tasted better & worked better, now we have muslce milk. give it a couple of years and it'll be passed by too.
someone made a very good point about good fats and testosterone levels in men, i agreed 100%, as it is a known fact. testostersone is metabolized by your liver from good fatty acids, not bad ones.
also, someone asked about the difference between soy and whey protein...one comes from milk and the other from processed soy. processed soy is something that men should STAY AWAY FROM!!!! it has been recently discovered that processed soy products actually RAISE estrogen levels in men, which is counter active to men burning fat and bulding muscle. our testosterone levels drop after 30 years of age, so if you want to build lean muscle, and burn the fat of of your mid section instead of store fat there, ump onto the muscle milk (or similar WHEY protein product) band wagon and run from any soy protein products. you should rally only eat RAW soy beans...
thanks for listening...

Muscle Milk is fine if it works for you, but it gives me major diarrhea so I had to stop using it. I find I'm very sensitive to protein supplements in that way, so I've tried a couple of them and at this point the Optimum Nutrition powder is the one that gives me the least intestinal issues.

I should have bumped the thread before my purchase. I was thinking of getting Optimum Nutrition ON Gold Standard, 100% Natural Whey before I searched GAF

Oh well I want to try this for now
