Buying a Dreamcast

Well, since I decided to wait with my purchase of the Xbox 360 due to the lack of interesting games (personal taste) I need to spend the money on other things. So, I decided I should buy a Dreamcast with the upcoming Radilgy.

My question now is, which games are a MUST for the Dreamcast. I'm not interested in Grandia (played II a bit, don't like it) and Skies of Arcadia (got the Cube version). Also, are there accessories I need to buy with the Dreamcast?

You probably ought to get Shenmue, to discover whether you love it or hate it (hating is better for the soul).

I'd get the first shenmue. It's depressing for me to think about that game right now because i don't have a dreamcast anymore, my copy of shenmue is broken anyway, and i don't have an xbox to be able to play part 2. :(

I was just going to make a list and realized that most of the games I was going to mention had been ported to other consoles. Damn Frankensteining of a dead console's library :-/

Anyways:
Crazy Taxi
Code veronica
Powerstone (1)
Street figher 3
Ikaruga
Virtua tennis
MSR
Marvel vs. Capcom (1+2)
Garou
Sword of the berserk (hell yeah)
Ecco the dolphin
Street fighter alpha 3
Toycommander (remember this one to be pretty neat)
House of the dead 2
REZ (ps2 version is superior though)
Space channel 5 (never played this one unfortunately)
Samba de amigo (neither this one actually)
Jet set radio (couldn't get into it personally)
Daytona USA 2001

Whatever you do, make sure to get one of the nifty sega arcade sticks.

Not much of a sonic adventure and even less of a shenmue fan personally. 6.8 was spot on.

Was confidential mission any good?

EDIT: OH! OH! Chu Chu Rocket!

Lots of nice Capcom exclusives for the Dreamcast:

- Power Stone
- Power Stone 2 (get both, as they play COMPLETELY differently)
- Tech Romancer (Kikaioh in Japan)
- Street Fighter Alpha 3 (best version next to the Saturn version)
- Gunbird 2
- Cannon Spike
- Rival Schools 2

All range from quite good to excellent.

I recommend the following:

MDK 2: Extremely difficult and challenging action game from Bioware.
Shenmue: Not that great. Buy only if you want the backstory to
Shenmue II: Awesome awesome game. Avoid the Xbox version for the DC one as Shenmue DC lacks the awful American voice acting.
Jet Grind Radio: Great rollerskating/painting/platforming... thing. Just check it out.
Crazy Taxi: Just like the arcade game.
Sonic Adventure 2: Pretty good, but I suppose you could get Battle for GC.

Also, you'll need a VMU. But you prolly already knew that.

If you have any interest in fighting games, find an Ascii Pad FT or an arcade stick from Sega or Ascii. Heck, get four of them. Fighting games are literally painful to play with a standard Dreamcast controller.

And if you want to play imports, get a DC-X boot disc.

Still playing MSR myself from time to tome. I love this game.

By the way, I'd like to buy a new (second) dreamcast to avoid a failure. I heard about a re-issue with Radilgy, any news about it ?

In addition to several of the above:

Red Dog (underrated), Cosmic Smash (very cool), Ooga Booga (fun stuff), Dynamite Cop (fun 3D beat 'em up that, sadly, is better than all the rest since), Soul Calibur (still the best), Chu Chu Rocket (needs an XBLA port), Wild Metal Country (acquired taste, but fun and old-school), Bangaioh (though I prefer the N64 edition), and Zero Gunner 2 (bad-ass).

I would recommend the Shenmue series, just get the European version of II because it has subtitles and no horrible dub.

Also one of my personal favorites is Tech Rommancer, a really fun fighting game.

Jet Set Radio is a must have.

Power Stone 2 also.

I really enjoyed the Sonic Adventure games, but not sure how well they can hold up today.

I also really enjoyed Ecco until I got lost in one of the harder parts. Gave up after that. It looked really nice though.

And Crazy Taxi is glorious.

Didn't shenmue II not come out in the US for Dreamcast? If you're talking about the european version, would i need a european dc? if you're talking about the japanese version, would i be able to change all the text and subs to english?

Virtual On: OT

A must-own, especially with twinsticks...anyone know if they released any PS2/Xbox- -> DC converters that could play VO:OT in dual stick mode?

Don't think so. I have a DC pair and a Saturn pair. My 5 year old is entering VR training in the spring (via 2 DCs, 2 copies of the game and a link cable.).

Can't wait.

Holy shit. That is the best thing I have ever heard. You sir, win father of the year. Kid is going to grow up to be the first Gundam Pilot. I am calling it now.

I'm in Japan now and they have the Virtual on: 4 Force out. It's pretty fun, but for some reason the combat is slowed down quite a bit. It feels sluggish at first. So I haven't played it much.

Actually that is a lie, I am just tired of being beaten by all these Japanese guys who practice all day :( Budo am cry.

Yeah, I've seen videos of Force and the pacing seemed far different than previous installments.

This is one (of many) series' that Sega has dropped the ball on IMO. The thought of a next gen VOOT makes my dick stiffen.

Anyone get the PS2 VO? I have it. It wasn't as bad as I thought it would be, but it's not VOOT.

Bangai-o
Berserk
Chu Chu Rocket (great in 4 player)
Crazy Taxi
Crazy Taxi 2 (yes, 2 as well)
Ecco
Headhunter
House of the Dead 2
Ikaruga
Jet Set Radio
MDK 2
Power Stone
Power Stone 2
Rez
Seaman
Shenmue
Shenmue II
Sonic Adventure 2
Soul Calibur
Space Channel 5
Street Fighter 3: 3rd Strike
Virtua Tennis 2

Keeping it to absolute cream of the crop must haves that are not available on any other platform:

Border Down
Jet Set Radio
Power Stone

Power Stone is the game I always put the most time in when I dust off my DC.

XBLA Power Stone would be godly

I wanted to focus on DC exclusives, and you can get all the Sakura Taisen main series games (except 4) on other consoles.

1. Sakura Taisen 1 + 2 are coming out on PSP soon.
2. Sakura Taisen 3 was ported to PS2 just a few months back.
3. Sakura Taisen 5 Ep. 0 and Sakura Taisen 5 are PS2 exclusives.
4. Sakura Taisen 1 had a PS2 exclusive remake called Atsuki Chishio Ni.

Ferrari F355 Challenge. Yu Suzuki's masterpiece. Buy it.

Or just find an arcade machine with the 3 screens.

Oh my....now that is his masterpiece.

For consoles it is and always will be Shenmue.(mostly II)

I want one of those in my house so bad. Actually, make that two.

I know, I'm very fond of the series... I was mostly joking.

I own the four games on DC, the two remakes and two new games on the PS2, and a lot of the side games (both onlines titles and columns on DC, Mysterious Paris on PS2...). And dozen of products like books, koubu kits, and so on. I'm even working on an automatic translation system for this game (acquisition by a tuner card of a computer, text recognition, translation using a database, image composting and TV output)... the prototype works.

Still, it's easier to play such a Japan-only game on non-japan systems on Dreamcast (thanks to DC-X), VMU is nice addition, and new versions are not always better than older ones. Besides, there's nice hidden things if you play all the games on DC, using save for a game in the following one. There's also a good all-in-one box for ST 1-4.

Not for everyone, but such a wonderful series...

Crazy Taxi is one boring motherfucker.

DC, while short lived - it's got to be one of my favorite console ever. Sure, a lot of its good games are ported over to other machines so the list has been kinda diluted - but there are still quite a few absolute gems.

One of the few that I would like to mention on top of some of those excellent games that were previously mentioned...

Cosmic Smash = very cool, cool game.
Napple Tale = Yoko Kanno music + super cute platform+RPG+puppet alchemy!
Typing of the dead + keyboard = LOL at yourself.
Samba de Amigo + Ver. 2000 + Maracas = party golden
Blue Submarine 6 - time & tide = not much of fan of the anime itself, but this one is a submarine scavenger hunt, a very unique experience.

Skies of Arcadia
Shenmue
Shenmue II (import it)
Powerstone 2
Jet Grind Radio

Time Stalkers is okay if you can find it cheap.

Well, i'm sort of an arcade game freak so the Dreamcast was right in my wheel house. Take this list with that grain of salt. :)

Powerstone 1 & 2
Virtua Tennis
Crazy Taxi
House of the Dead 2 w/Lightgun
Ferrari F355 Challenge
18-Wheel American Pro Trucker
Chu Chu Rocket
Daytona USA
Jet Grind Radio
Sega Bass Fishing
Sega Marine Fishing both w/fishing rod
Ready 2 Rumble Boxing

Thats about all i'll ever want to own for that system. It may not be much but my love for those games is STRONG.

Get Demolition Racer: No Exit.

It's a great combination of racing and crash'em derby gameplay, and it feels like an early version of Burnout. Extremely fun if a little rough around the edges in comparison to current gen games of its type like Burnout and Full Auto.

wait... why do you need to spend your moeny?

I have two DCs that Im not using and would be willing to sell. one works perfectly and the other one might have a bad CD drive. its been a while since I tested it so it might not work at all but I know I kept it for some reason.

I have the S-video cable and several controllers and VMUs. I have one of those Gameshark discs that will let you play imports but the only import I have is F355 Challenge. I just HAD to have that game.

Games
Shenmue
F355 US and Japan
Crazy Taxi
Grandia II
SF3 3rd Strike
Toy Commander
Jet Set Radio
several others I cant remember at the moment without pulling out the collection

I still have the box of the most recent DC that I bought which was either in 01 or 02 I think. the system and games are in perfect condition except for maybe some dust. I can take some pics if youre interested.

Yeah, most of the DCs best can now be had elsewhere. It's a hell of a lot less needed these days.

Still, there's Jet Set Radio, VOOT, VF3, and a few others that make it worth keeping.

i'd agree with the thought that it's probably more of the 1999 to whenever-dc-was-killed experience to get stuff that remained exclusive and/or sufficiently difficult to get the ported versions for the ps2/gc:

sega rally 2

voot

gundam - the one from capcom that got released toward the end of the dc's life. i can't remember the title, it's an arcade port, i think. it might have been ported to the ps2 or something.

berserk - mindless but good for a romp

samba de amigo - good but kind of pointless without the maracas, which are probably now pretty expensive.

typing of the dead - probably one of my favorites of the dc library

unless you speak fluent japanese, you probably shouldn't bother with the sakura taisen series. they're pretty dialogue-heavy.

also rez and f355, which i believe are pretty difficult to find for the ps2.

Bangai-O ~ Unique, insane, fun shooter.

Mars Matrix ~ balls to the fucking walls insane! AWESOME

Red Dog: Superior Firepower ~ the most underrated Dreamcast game! Fucking GREAT!

Test Drive Le Mans ~ All kinds of fantastic

Jet Grind Radio ~ Sometimes annoying but the aesthetic qualities make up for it

RE CV ~ awesome entry

Sword of Berserk ~ lame game worth playing to see a hint of what the DC was capable of...seriously nice stuff

Super Magnetic Neo ~ Insanity. Also cool and hard!

Confidential Mission ~ Fun light gun shooter

Soul Caliber ~ Duh
