Okay, I had a R25 earmarked for myself and am honestly considering getting this instead...would be better too since finding the one I wanted proved to be a pain in the dickShogmaster said:TTOB, we were promised chicks with dicks.
While I have not seen this unit in person, specs wise it look equal and better in every way except for the screen resolution. If Gateway wises up and offers a $50 1440x900 LCD upgrade option, I'd probably replace my R25 sooner than later (I need more powah than the 1.6GHz C2D in my R25).
Maybe by then Gateway will provide that WSXGA LCD option. Then you don't even have to consider a R25.Gattsu25 said:Okay, I had a R25 earmarked for myself and am honestly considering getting this instead...would be better too since finding the one I wanted proved to be a pain in the dick
I'm not going to be able to afford it until around Feb., regardless
C-140 = Wacom only. 14" WXGA with fast C2D options. 7 lbs. Starts @ $1000Pimpwerx said:I need to order a tablet like today. I was gonna get in on this deal before, but had something come up. I need a PC asap, and I need one with a good digitizer. Wacom. Is the Gateway still the way to go? C-140X or C-120X? PEACE.
I haven't seen one in person, so I can't verify whether it's integrated.Pimpwerx said:Looks like I'm going with 2GHz + x2300. Is the Bluetooth add-on integrated? I didn't add it b/c I didn't know if it was a shitty dongle or not, but if it's integrated, I want that too. PEACE.
EDIT: How are those solid-state drives on battery life? I'm thinking about eventually dropping in a 30-60GB SSHD and just synching stuff with my external drive regularly. I gotta look around for some benchmarks.
YYZ said:thanks for the heads up. Do you know if the same deal or similar deal is available to Canadians? I'm looking for a tablet PC with that kind of budget so it fits well.
It's $950 after the coupon, not $799.Shogmaster said:Holy crap that's an incredible price. 1.46Ghz is a bit on the slow side but $799? Merry fucking Christmas!
BTW guys, don't forget to do a clean install. I checked out some Gateways at Best Buy and it comes from factory as crapware city, just like my Toshiba did. No wonder TToB was freakin' out about his new slow TPC. :lol

I blame the installer. The Take Out Bandit said:It's still pretty shit after a clean install, and adding 4GB of RAM.
STEVE JOBS DELIVER ME!
Rushmore said:Haha, not trying to stir the pot man. With all the problems you've had (and they appear to be isolated), maybe there's something wrong with your machine? Like bad memory or something? I can only assume how low your faith in Vista (and by association, Gateway) must be right now but with all of the problems you're describing, I'd ask for them to replace it with a brand new one (and not some refurb).

I only personally tried the T4000 series and not have used the Gateway C-140 series. I have tried the Lenovo T61 at a trade show.ROFL said:Shog, I'm wondering how you might compare this with the more pricey Fujitsus such as the T4420 or Lenovo T61s? I've been told the Lenovo has the best keyboard and build quality overall...

kidding!

At the suggestion of the Microsoft Apologist Corps. I've removed McAfee. So let's see if that un-fucks Vista.
I'm not counting on it.

Basically, C-140 is a bigger box than the other two (14" 16:10 LCD), and will allow for a better drawing experience due to having a bigger screen area to draw on IMO. Also, having a bigger casing allows them to squeeze in a dedicated GPU into the box as an option. The other two are 12" 4:3 LCD ultra portable boxes that will always be stuck with a built in GPU on the Northbridge chipset.
build quality wise, I can attest to the Fujitsus. They are VERY well built. I don't have too much experience with Gateway TPCs so I can't comment about their build quality. I did try out the 12" Gateway TPC (C-120) at Best Buy and that thing was built rather well. Lenovo hopefully is continuing the fine build quality that IBM Thinkpad heritage allows them.
The low price of the C-140 series is a mystery to me but a welcome surprise. I'm hoping that the bigger form factor is allowing them to have us the low price and not cutting corners.
But then again, the Toshiba R20 series (another 14" 16:10 LCD convertible TPC) that I'm using was the price leader before they were discontinued (around $1100 to 1300) and mine has served me very well, even though I took it everywhere and treated rather rough at times.

I think the C-140 is Santa Rosa ready (since many have ordered it prior with the faster bus C2D when they allowed upgrading of the CPU few months back). If you can brave the tinkering inside and the warranty voidage , I'm sure that the mobo and the BIOS will accept a faster 800MHz FSB C2D with the 4MB of L2 cache.Pimpwerx said:Is the base model (C140) able to decode a 1080p stream? Actually thinking about my usage over the last year or two, I realize that the games I've spent the most time with are BF2, Civ4 and SMAC. I'm probably done with PC fpses now, so I don't need a graphics beast for 3D. I do want something that can decode 1080p sources. If the GPU is gonna be integrated, it better be future-proof.
Speaking of which, how shitty is the CPU? Again, nothing major on the gaming side. I'll be doing media handling. PEACE.
EDIT: The deal is for $50 off now on the base model. So it's $750 for the base model, $900 for the C140X and $1000 for the top model.
EDIT2: FINALLY ordered one. The C-140XL. I'd have preferred 1GB of memory, since I'll upgrade to 4GB, but I guess it'll be fine. Any chance we can upgrade the CPU in this thing at some point in future? No chance of supporting a 800MHz FSB, huh?
Just download all the drivers from their site and nuke that shit. You don't need it IMO.Pimpwerx said:It came in yesterday. It's not bad atall, although I already hate Vista. Why do I always have to undo the shit MS puts in their OSes each time I install? Definitely doing a clean install this weekend. Anyway, I wrote this post with the pen.
Is there any reason not to uninstall Spare Backup or any of the other schlock that comes pre-installed?
Oh yeah, this thing (C-140XL) runs hot. Well, hotter than my Inspiron 8600. PEACE. (really wierd handwriting that)

If you go XP Tablet Edition: your Wacom driver apps (i.e. Photoshop and Painter) will lag in pressure sensitivty slightly at the beginning of each stroke. Sketchbook Pro will be fine since it uses Microsofts' native tablet driver. The Take Out Bandit said:Fuck Vista, and fuck Whilce Pistachio!
Man, is there any real reason why I'm dealing with this shit instead of using XP?
Seriously dude, I don't give a fuck about handwriting technology or any of that other bullshit. Can I downgrade to XPenis and use Sketchbook Pro 2?
At least it will make the wait for the Apple Tablet slightly more tolerable.![]()
Shogmaster said:If you go XP Tablet Edition: your Wacom driver apps (i.e. Photoshop and Painter) will lag in pressure sensitivty slightly at the beginning of each stroke. Sketchbook Pro will be fine since it uses Microsofts' native tablet driver.
If you go regular XP Pro: no lag in any Wacom apps, but no more tablet functionality in the OS (handwriting recognition, no more Tablet Input Panel, no more Journal, etc.).
If you stick with Vista and add 4GB of RAM for around $100 (newegg sells two 2GB DDR2 666 SODIMMs for a little less than that), you might see less whatever annoyance or you might not. I have no clue.
There you go. There's your choices. GOOD LUCK!![]()
The Take Out Bandit said:Okay, so with XP Pro it will basically be a Wacom tablet when I use my graphics apps? I can live with that. I don't use the fuckin' journal, and fuck the handwriting recognition it's about as good as picking up my hand writing as a fuckin' Nintendo DS. And at least Nintendo doesn't dick me for $1,000 for that shit heap. AND IT PLAYS CONTRA 4 BEOTCH!
Dude, I blew money on 4GB of RAM way back when I first booted this whore-beast up.
My annoyance is Vista.
I think I'll just go XPenis Pro then.
The Take Out Bandit said:Yeah, let me test drive a copy so to speak first. If it works out I'll gladly exchange you a shitburger for your shitburger with cheese next Tuesday!*
