TTOB, we were promised chicks with dicks. :(

Shog, how does this compare to the R25 (S3513?)?

While I have not seen this unit in person, specs wise it look equal and better in every way except for the screen resolution. If Gateway wises up and offers a $50 1440x900 LCD upgrade option, I'd probably replace my R25 sooner than later (I need more powah than the 1.6GHz C2D in my R25).

Okay, I had a R25 earmarked for myself and am honestly considering getting this instead...would be better too since finding the one I wanted proved to be a pain in the dick

I'm not going to be able to afford it until around Feb., regardless

Maybe by then Gateway will provide that WSXGA LCD option. Then you don't even have to consider a R25.

Ordered a WACOM pen for it. Odd that my Intuous 3 pen does not work, my buddy's Intuous OG model pen works fine. >:|

Also ordered 4BG of RAM for it.

A bit pissed this f*cking thing, in addition to running Winblows; also does not have a DVD burner. WTF Gateway? Who in the hell sells a computer in this day with no DVD burner?!

And I can't find one for sale on the Gateway site. >:|

I need to order a tablet like today. I was gonna get in on this deal before, but had something come up. I need a PC asap, and I need one with a good digitizer. Wacom. Is the Gateway still the way to go? C-140X or C-120X? PEACE.

C-140 = Wacom only. 14" WXGA with fast C2D options. 7 lbs. Starts @ $1000
C-120 = Wacom + passive touch. 12" WXGA with 1.2GHz ULV C2D max. 5lbs.Starts @ $1300

C-140 is the only 14" TPC option available now. There are many 12" TPCs to choose from.

Looks like I'm going with 2GHz + x2300. Is the Bluetooth add-on integrated? I didn't add it b/c I didn't know if it was a shitty dongle or not, but if it's integrated, I want that too. PEACE.

EDIT: How are those solid-state drives on battery life? I'm thinking about eventually dropping in a 30-60GB SSHD and just synching stuff with my external drive regularly. I gotta look around for some benchmarks.

I haven't seen one in person, so I can't verify whether it's integrated.

As for the SSHDs, the benchs I've seen say there are a little bit of battery savings, but it's a drop in the bucket for the ones that have 2GHz Core 2 Duos with dedicated video cards. ;) Save your money on that unless you have a UMPC running 800MHz A110s or something...

I tried.

I really tried.

This tablet PC just pisses me off.

It's horribly slow, Vista is the worst OS since Windows ME. The damned thing cannot come out of sleep / hibernation without freaking the hell out. It cannot shutdown. SHUTDOWN! You would think that after 12 years MS could figure this one out.

Ugh.

I slapped 4GB of memory in this pig and it still runs like garbage.

Is XP really that bad on a Tablet PC? Because if Vista is allegedly better; then I feel sorrier for PC losers than I did before.

Give me some pointers to get this pig running at least on par with my Powermac G4 Dual 450mhz machine; or I'm going to have to eBay it, because it's getting too hard to resist putting my fist through the god damn display.

I should just smash it to bits with a sledgehammer and mail it to Apple with a memo, "This is why you must make a tablet Mac!"

Sorry to bump this dinosaur but I just recently ordered a Gateway tablet PC and wanted to update people who might still be interested in one.

I'm *hoping* that it won't take as long to ship mine as it has for many of the people posting in this thread, but the stats at that price can't be beat. (And no, I don't work for Gateway). The only major downer is the lack of TV-out but VGA inputs on LCDs are more and more commonplace these days.

As for the Vista concerns, I'm already running a laptop with Vista that has somewhat lower specs and have had no issues. Vista is pretty much the OS of choice for tablet users anyhow so I'm sure I can tweak it enough to have the same problem-free experience I have on my existing laptop.

For those on an even tighter budget, they have tablet PCs that start at $750 (with coupon code).

thanks for the heads up. Do you know if the same deal or similar deal is available to Canadians? I'm looking for a tablet PC with that kind of budget so it fits well.

Sorry YYZ, I just did a quick search and it looks like you can only order directly from Gateway if you're in the US. I also checked their retail partners in Canada and it looks like they don't carry this model or anything like it. There's a decent looking HP for $899 at Futureshop but it looks like it employs a touchscreen instead of a Wacom digitizer (see earlier in the thread for the differences). I was looking forward to Dell's Latitude TX but I couldn't wait!

Asus R1E is out! i'm waiting for reviews now

Holy crap that's an incredible price. 1.46Ghz is a bit on the slow side but $799? Merry fucking Christmas!

BTW guys, don't forget to do a clean install. I checked out some Gateways at Best Buy and it comes from factory as crapware city, just like my Toshiba did. No wonder TToB was freakin' out about his new slow TPC. :lol

It's $950 after the coupon, not $799.

And thanks for bumping old wounds, Rushmore! Fool me once...

Well, the one he's refering to is the lower end model (C-140S). I figure for a couple extra bills, it's worth getting the extra ram, processing power and video chip. And TTOB, by clean install, I'm assuming you're refering to a reinstall of the disk that came with the laptop? Doesn't that also install all of the crapware or is there an option to do a selective install?

A clean install is FORMAT AND REINSTALL FUCKING WINDOWS ONLY!

Haha, not trying to stir the pot man. With all the problems you've had (and they appear to be isolated), maybe there's something wrong with your machine? Like bad memory or something? I can only assume how low your faith in Vista (and by association, Gateway) must be right now but with all of the problems you're describing, I'd ask for them to replace it with a brand new one (and not some refurb).

Well, you see. . . I come to expect this sort of behavior from Microsoft OS. What I'm experiencing is what I've seen on several new laptops as well running Vista.

I'm just going to wait. There's supposed to be an Apple announcement soon. If it's what I want, this bitch is going on Craigslist for $600.

If not, then I'll hunker down and attempt yet another re-install.

Ugh. . .

Shog, I'm wondering how you might compare this with the more pricey Fujitsus such as the T4420 or Lenovo T61s? I've been told the Lenovo has the best keyboard and build quality overall...

I only personally tried the T4000 series and not have used the Gateway C-140 series. I have tried the Lenovo T61 at a trade show.

Basically, C-140 is a bigger box than the other two (14" 16:10 LCD), and will allow for a better drawing experience due to having a bigger screen area to draw on IMO. Also, having a bigger casing allows them to squeeze in a dedicated GPU into the box as an option. The other two are 12" 4:3 LCD ultra portable boxes that will always be stuck with a built in GPU on the Northbridge chipset.

build quality wise, I can attest to the Fujitsus. They are VERY well built. I don't have too much experience with Gateway TPCs so I can't comment about their build quality. I did try out the 12" Gateway TPC (C-120) at Best Buy and that thing was built rather well. Lenovo hopefully is continuing the fine build quality that IBM Thinkpad heritage allows them.

The low price of the C-140 series is a mystery to me but a welcome surprise. I'm hoping that the bigger form factor is allowing them to have us the low price and not cutting corners.

But then again, the Toshiba R20 series (another 14" 16:10 LCD convertible TPC) that I'm using was the price leader before they were discontinued (around $1100 to 1300) and mine has served me very well, even though I took it everywhere and treated rather rough at times.

At the suggestion of the Microsoft Apologist Corps. I've removed McAfee. So let's see if that un-fucks Vista.

I'm not counting on it.

The order that I placed on 11/15 (morning) just shipped today. It's currently in Louisville, KY. C'mon Rorschach, you know you want to give it one more chance!

Is the base model (C140) able to decode a 1080p stream? Actually thinking about my usage over the last year or two, I realize that the games I've spent the most time with are BF2, Civ4 and SMAC. I'm probably done with PC fpses now, so I don't need a graphics beast for 3D. I do want something that can decode 1080p sources. If the GPU is gonna be integrated, it better be future-proof.

Speaking of which, how shitty is the CPU? Again, nothing major on the gaming side. I'll be doing media handling. PEACE.

EDIT: The deal is for $50 off now on the base model. So it's $750 for the base model, $900 for the C140X and $1000 for the top model.

EDIT2: FINALLY ordered one. The C-140XL. I'd have preferred 1GB of memory, since I'll upgrade to 4GB, but I guess it'll be fine. Any chance we can upgrade the CPU in this thing at some point in future? No chance of supporting a 800MHz FSB, huh?

Okay, so I got mine a little over a week ago and after some use, here are my thoughts.

Pros:

- Pretty decent power. Plays all of my games (granted, I don't have Crysis or Oblivion) at high graphic settings without a hitch.
- Nice large screen (for a tablet pc). Very easy to draw on and the pressure sensitivity works like a charm!

Cons:

- This thing weighs a ton. I've never had a laptop weigh this much before and it's definitely noticeable when you're resting it on your lap.
- The battery is huge and it sticks out.
- The volume control is horrible. There's no visual indication of how much you're adjusting the volume by and it's not a volume wheel.
- The USB ports are all on the left side of the machine. Great if you're left handed but as a righty, I like being able to plug in a mouse on the right side of the machine. I ordered a bluetooth mouse specifically because of this issue.
- The speakers are small and not very loud.

I know I have more cons than pros but the price still makes it worth it. I'll post some sample sketches when I get the chance. Thanks for the tip on Sketchpad Pro. This app rocks!

I think the C-140 is Santa Rosa ready (since many have ordered it prior with the faster bus C2D when they allowed upgrading of the CPU few months back). If you can brave the tinkering inside and the warranty voidage , I'm sure that the mobo and the BIOS will accept a faster 800MHz FSB C2D with the 4MB of L2 cache.

BTW, my 1.6GHz C2D T5200 (the cheapest Merom) in my R25 handles 720p VC-1 and h.264 streams fine but I'm not sure about 1080p. My R25 has GMA950, so if the X3100 improves on the decode assist by a decent margin, I think you'll be fine.

Rushmore, I'm looking forward to your coming sketches!

Mine should be here Monday. I went with the C-140XL. Looks like a solid laptop overall, and a killer tablet. It's a step down in screen size and resolution from my 15.4" WSXGA on my dead Inspiron. But it should have better response than the Hitachi in the Dell. It weighs the same as the Inspiron too. :lol

I asked Gateway about servicing different parts of the computer myself, and it seems fine. I still got a tube of Arctic Silver 2 sitting aroung from the OC days, so a swap shouldn't be an issue.

BTW, is there an upper bound on memory where performance starts to degrade? Any point going beyond 4GB (assuming the mobo even supports it)? PEACE.

It came in yesterday. It's not bad atall, although I already hate Vista. Why do I always have to undo the shit MS puts in their OSes each time I install? Definitely doing a clean install this weekend. Anyway, I wrote this post with the pen. :D

Is there any reason not to uninstall Spare Backup or any of the other schlock that comes pre-installed?

Oh yeah, this thing (C-140XL) runs hot. Well, hotter than my Inspiron 8600. PEACE. (really wierd handwriting that)

Just download all the drivers from their site and nuke that shit. You don't need it IMO.

Anywho, guess what I found while doing more research into the C-140 (I have this really wacky idea of buying one and sticking the 14.1" 1440x900 LCD that comes with R25s...). TToB will love this:

Whilce Portacio
apparently has been using a C-140 and Sketchbook pro for a while. His blog even has cool tutorials using it.

Fuck Vista, and fuck Whilce Pistachio!

Man, is there any real reason why I'm dealing with this shit instead of using XP?

Seriously dude, I don't give a fuck about handwriting technology or any of that other bullshit. Can I downgrade to XPenis and use Sketchbook Pro 2?

At least it will make the wait for the Apple Tablet slightly more tolerable. >:(

If you go XP Tablet Edition: your Wacom driver apps (i.e. Photoshop and Painter) will lag in pressure sensitivty slightly at the beginning of each stroke. Sketchbook Pro will be fine since it uses Microsofts' native tablet driver.

If you go regular XP Pro: no lag in any Wacom apps, but no more tablet functionality in the OS (handwriting recognition, no more Tablet Input Panel, no more Journal, etc.).

If you stick with Vista and add 4GB of RAM for around $100 (newegg sells two 2GB DDR2 666 SODIMMs for a little less than that), you might see less whatever annoyance or you might not. I have no clue.

There you go. There's your choices. GOOD LUCK! :D

Okay, so with XP Pro it will basically be a Wacom tablet when I use my graphics apps? I can live with that. I don't use the fuckin' journal, and fuck the handwriting recognition it's about as good as picking up my hand writing as a fuckin' Nintendo DS. And at least Nintendo doesn't dick me for $1,000 for that shit heap. AND IT PLAYS CONTRA 4 BEOTCH! :P

Dude, I blew money on 4GB of RAM way back when I first booted this whore-beast up. :P

My annoyance is Vista.

There you go. There's your choices. GOOD LUCK! :D

I think I'll just go XPenis Pro then.

If you don't have a keycode of regular XPenis Pro (it's got a ring to it), I'll trade you my XP pro keycode for your Vista Premium keycode you've been using. It's 100% legit. If you want we can exchange actual documents and CDs. Let me know muchacho.

Yeah, let me test drive a copy so to speak first. If it works out I'll gladly exchange you a shitburger for your shitburger with cheese next Tuesday!*

*Pure Wimpy-ism, who knows when I'll find a copy to test. :lol

I don't know much about Tablet PC's but when I used to be a listener of Twit and other TechTv stuff they used to make fun of them all the time. Now this was over a year back so things could have change, but what is the backstory and issue on these things. I mean they really didn't like em for some reason and it was seperate people. It wasn't like there was just one group of biased people.
