So apparently the $30 T-Mo plan is only available to new T-Mo customers. So you can't use the ETF deal and then downgrade to that plan. Does any one know if the $40 Wal-Mart plan has the same restriction?

ETF deal is ETF deal, you can't mix it with any of the prepaid plan on this thread.

I was planning on signing up for their Simple Choice postpaid plan to get the deal and then canceling it and going for one of the cheaper pre-paid plans instead. Apparently the $30 plan is only for new customers though, so I was wondering if the Wal-Mart plan had the same restriction.

do you just really want to keep your phone number?

Google Voice

Did some more research on the Wal-Mart Family Plan and it looks like it would be possible to move off of T-Mo's Simple Choice plan to their $40 unlimited voice/text/2.5GB data plan.

Buuuuuuuuuttt, the data is only 3G. So screw that.

Does anyone have any experience with AIO Wireless, me and my GF are thinking about switching to them (currently on TMobile post-paid) and I was wondering if they indeed let you bring any device over to them? As well as if their signal footprint is comparable to ATT like I've been hearing?

I used them for a few months and used my own phone. It is AT&T service but with throttled speeds. LTE is capped at 8mb/s, but most of my speedtests were in the 5.5-7mb/s range which is more than fast enough. You also get AT&T's coverage. I dropped them because they didn't have SMS short codes. I have dual authentication on my Gmail and bank accounts where I'll get a text with a password if I log in from a new device, but since AIO didn't have short codes I couldn't receive those texts. Plus you can't vote on American Idol if that's your thing.

Good to know thanks for the info, and I stopped following american idol years ago so I'm good lol. I planned on getting either a 1520 or a 1020 outright and putting on AIO. I refuse to pay ATT monthly prices and TMobile signal in my area is a little dodgy at best so this is perfect.

so get Simple Choice. cancel after a month. buy a SIM kit and activate under a new account.
I think if you get a subsdized phone out of the ETF deal and then cancel after a month, they'll want you to pay off the rest of the phone immediately.

I'm trying to figure out if I could buy the SIM kit and get the $30/mo plan but have them process it as a plan change rather than as a cancellation followed by a new activation, then continue making the subsidized phone payments. Haven't seen any info on this particular situation.

You can't. Just pay off your phone. Plus you need to wait more than 1 month for ETF reimbursement.

that's why you either get a Lumia 521 for $106 or a phone you can resell for the cost.

So you're saying they would want the subsidized phone paid off as soon as I tried to change the plan with the SIM kit, so I should get a phone I wouldn't need to subsidize?

Right now I have a Verizon Galaxy Nexus and I really know nothing about the Windows phone ecosystem, fairly invested in Android. Not sure if any of the cheap T-Mobile Android phones would have comparable or better performance. Refurbished LG Optimus L9 for $96 could be alright.

Anything that gets me out of ~$100/mo Verizon bill (contract ends in July) onto the $30/mo plan is something I have to consider though, New Year's budget resolutions and all that.

Yes T-Mobile makes you buy one of their phones as part of the deal to pay off your etf. Most consumers will go for a nice phone like an iPhone or Galaxy, and T-Mobile figures people will do installment plans and not pay out right for the phone. In a way it's how they get people on contract with T-Mobile without calling it a contract. You're better off buying something as cheap as possible and then getting rid of it.

If you're contract ends in July the etf should be a bit lower now and not the full $350. Might be better off paying it yourself then doing the T-Mobile deal.

What would I do after getting rid of it?

I think the ETF would be something like $160, and the difference between my current bill from February through July and the $30/mo plan for that period would be about $335. Already I'd only be saving $175 and that's without the cost of a T-Mo phone, so I don't get why it would be better for me to pay it myself.

If your Vzn contract will ending soon you won't take benefit of the EFT deal anyway. Why even bother. Just buy a used Tmo phone off ebay and pay off the Vzn ETF yourself. It shouldn't be that high.

You also have to sign up for one of T-Mobile's postpaid plans for them to pay off your etf so that $30/month prepaid plan is NOT an option. Their lowest post paid plan is $50/month for 500mb of full speed data. Add in taxes and you're close to $60/month. They also have a $60 plan with 2.5gb and $70 with unlimited data. If you buy one of their phones and finance it you have to factor that into your bill as well, so that could add another $20-30/month and now you're quickly getting back to what you were paying with Verizon.

It still seems to me that the best option is to do the ETF deal and get a sub-$110 phone through that with the $50/mo plan, then buy the SIM kit (which is $0.99 on the website right now but the link is broken...) then put that SIM in and try to activate the $30/mo plan and see what happens. If I have to pay off the whole sub-$110 phone right away then so be it.

I'm not 100% convinced that I'll need to fully cancel the $50/mo plan in order to get on the $30/mo but even if I do the worst case scenario is paying off the phone immediately instead of at like $4 a month.

If you don't mind getting a new phone number that's a sure way of getting the $30 plan and having them pay off your etf on your old number. You can cancel the postpaid plan on your old number after they pay off the etf. If you have to retain your old number there's a good chance T-Mobile won't let you switch to that plan.

Sorry for the bump, but this is the best place for this:

My wife and I are both on AT&T. My contract ends soon, so I was thinking of looking into Straight Talk for their unlimited everything plan. I have Wifi, so I won't be using a TON of data (more like 1-1.5 gigs a month). I don't talk a ton, but I do text a lot. I live right outside of Indianapolis, so we have a lot of really strong AT&T and Verizon coverage, but I will be using a Nexus 5 (which I know Verizon does not support).

Eventually, my wife and I would like to BOTH go to these SIGNIFICANTLY cheaper options (her bill is like, $90 a month), but it's really hard since they seem too good to be true after being contract for so many years. Can anyone help me out a little?

We're both on AT&T and would love to have the option to have unlimited everything between the two of us. She's an iPhone user (currently on a 5S), which I'm not sure if that matters. Thanks!

E: I didn't think about it, but we'd REALLY prefer to keep our numbers. Is that possible coming from AT&T?

Dude, what is your question?

You want to know if you can port the number? yes you can.

Sorry...

1) Porting the number was one question. Thanks.

2) Is Straight Talk the best option for unlimited everything coming from AT&T (or when wanting to use AT&T's network)?

3) General question was if these things really are too good to be true? It seems crazy that you can get SO much for half the cost.

4) Are these package all individual, or are there family plan style options?

2 Straight talk has the advantage of having access to both Tmo and ATT towers (for some sim card). If you have good ATT signal everywhere anyway you can just get an ATT MVNO. See 1st post

3) Can't tell you. Try it yourself. I advise you port one of the number first.

4) Family plan is a rip off. Do the math yourself and include the tax amount and you will see yourself.

In addition to announcing the next free plan promotion yesterday, Sprint MVNO RingPlus also announced a new plan, the $1.99 "Kate" Plan. It includes 50 domestic minutes and 10 domestic or international SMS. Overage rates are 2¢/minute, 2¢/text, 2¢/MB and 7¢ per MMS picture messages.

In a lot of ways this is a better deal than RingPlus' famous free plan. The free plan is supported by pre-call advertising and RingPlus wants you to make calls. So they have several rules to "encourage" making outbound calls. The rule that seems most likely to trip people up is one that says users service will be terminated if they don't make an outbound call at least once per week and 30 outbound calls per month.

If you don't want to worry about making calls just to keep from losing your account, the Kate plan, which isn't a promotional plan and isn't subject to the usage requirements, seems like the way to go.

The Kate Plan will be available starting 8 AM PT, Feb 10.

Its a decent plan, its not as cheap as Lycomobile but you might get better signal with Sprint in some cities.

That's a pretty good plan. The 10 SMS limit is pretty laughable but the overage charges aren't bad at all so that makes up for it. Nice to see companies recognize that some people want the convenience of a cell phone but aren't tied to the hip with it and don't need unlimited everything.

Both my wife and my discover cards have this offer. Can't use it since I don't have boost.

Just noticed on the aiowireless.com website that the 2GB/$55 plan is now 2.5GB/$50 if you use the autopay option. So if you're a current customer, be sure to login and choose the new plan since it's not automatic.

my prepaid tmobile 30 dollar plan gave a text alert saying that my data limit is only 30 mb and that I had reached it. Is the table in the OP wrong when it says that the limit if 5GB?

It sounds like you have the daily $2/day payg plan. Call TMo to double check.

Its 45 if you use autopay... $50 standard. Yeah, you have to switch to it, or they will gladly take your extra money

I know this is a few months late, but I've been using Straight Talk since August.

1) You can port your number over, I didn't bother since I wanted to get a new number.

2) Straight Talk isn't bad, but if you want to stick with AT&T, I recommend Go Phone or AIO.

3) Yes, MVNO's are worth it. The fact that my phone isn't subsidized, and I can take it to whatever carrier I want (if it's a GSM carrier) and I'm not tied to a contract, makes it worth it. I'm currently deployed to the Middle East and all I had to do was buy a new sim and bam, cell service. Didn't have to worry about unlocking my phone, asking Verizon to unlock it and all of that BS.

4) Not sure about a family plan.

Gots a question.
I'm getting a Sprint Galaxy S4 and was curious if there was any way to unlock the SIM in the phone (The S4 IS dualband, right? Searched and that's what it was looking like.), for usage with AT&T? If not, are there any plans that I'd be able to get on that are <$50?

I believe you'll be able to bring Sprint S4s to Ting Wireless some time in April.

Wow, just checked their rates. They seem INCREDIBLY reasonable. In April? Yeah, I can wait a month after getting the phone. Especially for those rates. Cheers for introducing me to them.

There are ways if you visit XDA.

Yeah I've heard nothing but good things. I would've switched by now, but I'm still a little indecisive on what phone I want to get.

Technology has come such a long way that nowadays when supermarket sells $10 prepaid smartphone, nobody makes a fuss about it. Target has $50 Kyocera Nydro for Boost Mobile on sale for $10. And when I leisurely walk to the phone aisle of Target, they still have a whole stack in stock.

I quick check of the ESN on Ringplus BYOD Checker showed it does indeed support this Boost Mobile phone, even tough they officially only support Sprint branded phones.  For people who follow Ring+, they offer completely fee BYOD plan from time to time (and the plan get sold out usually within minutes).  If you want a "Sprint" phone you can use to sign up for free BYOD plan, this is a great phone to get.

Anyway lucky for me they offer two new free BYOD plans for LA and NYC residents only starting yesterday.  I was able to sign up both free phone for the free plans.   TBH the phone is pretty slow.  But I am still amazed that I can get a mini computer for $10.  It's even waterproof.  Even if I use it as beach music player, its well worth it.

So AT&T dropped their individual price to $65 for unlimited data/text with 2gb. And you can get a Moto X, Galaxy S3 or refurbished Galaxy S4 for free. $65 is still $20 more then Straight Talk, but they have unlimited data (throttled after 2.5gb)

So after two years (24 months), you're spending
AT&T = 24 x $65 = $1,560 + free phone
Straight Talk = 24 x $45 = $,1080 + $200-400 for a phone

I'm almost tempted to join AT&T cause I want a new phone now and don't want to pay $300 for it :(

It's not "unlimited" data and it is not prepaid

I think that's the no contract price. You can leave any time.

It's still 15 higher than TMobile's Simple Choice plan which gives you 1GB* of high speed data and unlimited slow data. * starting next month.

Plus it has free international roaming with edge speed. I just ported my wife's Verizon plan to TMobile.

I think that's the no contract price. You can leave any time.

I believe its a 2 year contract price. That's why you get free phones :\

Any who i upgraded my moto G to a Xperia Z and my download speeds went from 6-8mb to this:

JI1EUEp.png

which is crazy cause I'm still on the $30 plan!
