Jesus christ, I'm so sorry.

Microchip technology have made collars completely meaningless. I don't know why people persist with them.

I don't think I've ever known anyone to take the collars off their dogs when they crate them.

I'm sorry to hear about this OP, stay strong.

So sorry, I lost my much-loved family dog a few months ago so have an idea of how you're feeling. Easier said than done of course, but try to remember the good times and be thankful for the time you spent together rather than focusing on it as a loss per se. No matter what idiots in this thread would say, it's not your fault and you shouldn't feel bad. Disasters like this can happen and are horrible, but there's nothing you could have done.

Yes, but it's possible OP just doesn't know. Helping someone out by passing on some warnings and information is more important here. He still has a puppy that could be at risk if he just assumes his big dog's accident was a one-time freak occurrence.

saying "this is your fault" isn't passing on warnings. It's being a dick

EDIT: You should've said something like "sorry to hear that, but this happens more than people think." then posted some relevant links to help warn people.

That's how a neighbors dog went years ago. Poor bastard was trying to leap at the fence and got his collar stuck on the top of it. Hung there for day.

Sorry op.

This happened to my neighbor's dog as well. Tried to jump the fence during a storm and hung himself. :(

I'm so sorry for your loss OP.

:(

This thread is depressing and as a huge dog lover (and owner), I worry about things like this everyday. It's a damn shame to see something like this happen, they don't deserve it (at all). I hope that everything goes smoothly for you and your wife

I am so sorry to hear that. My girlfriend's childhood German Shepherd strangled to death after lightning scared her into a tree. God, I can't imagine just finding my dog that way. My condolences.

I'm so sorry. I know that feel.

Woke up one morning several years ago to my younger dog whining at the foot of my bed. Looked down and saw my older dog was dead. :(

You are an asshole.

Sad that it happened. I never knew of it and it will be helpful when I get a dog.

Jado could've used more tact and there's a time and place, but it's solid information for those looking to get a dog and cage train.

Again, it's an horrific story and I teared up a bit, but Jado's intention seemed pure.

Sorry to hear man. Shit is tough. When I was 12, I forgot to let my dog in on a hot summer day. He was in bad shape when I found him and he died at the vet 2 days later. It was over 15 years ago and I still beat myself up over it

Really sorry for your loss, man. It's gonna hurt for awhile, but you'll see it through.

Thank you all for the kind words. Yes we are idiots. We should have known better, but I never came across anything that said to take the collar off. My wife read so much. We read so many things in preparing to get this dog.He was only seven months old. We thought we were keeping him safe in there. We took the collars off the little puppies we have, before we just left to take Orion to get cremated. My big boy great Pyrenees. Damn.

Oh my gosh that's just terrible. So sorry for your loss, that must be incredibly hard. Just don't beat yourself up about it (it doesn't sound like you are but in case you start traveling down that road...). Accidents happen, man. Again, deepest condolences.

Man that blows. I would be gutted if that happened.

When I was a little kid we had one of our dogs tied outside during the day. I guess what happened is he kept running around in circles and the rope he was tied on kept twisting up and up, and since it was elevated a little bit off the ground it eventually got to the point where he twisted it so high it started to choke him and he died. My older brother found him. I am glad I was too young to really remember.

Fuck, sorry to hear that OP.

When I shipped my pooch back home the shipping company were insistent that we got a bigger crate. By the third crate they said they'd accept him as he finally had enough clearance in all directions. We got that final crate from overseas.

I don't know why I'm rambling like this. Guess cos it's such an awful occurrence.

Sorry for your loss OP, losing a family pet is never easy. Have two beagles myself, and consider them a part of my family. Thoughts go out to you and the wife.

Yeah I knew a dog that died this way too. He was just chained up to a tree.

I was more than upset because it was a beautiful Weimaraner and he just tied it to a tree. Granted I was only 11 and the owner lived in a shack, but I knew that the living conditions for that dog was just horrid enough for me to be massively upset about.

In OP's case, I must commend him for crate training the dog though. A Great Pyrenees... my goodness... my condolences OP.

Fuck, sorry for the pain you're going through right now OP. :/

This is why I always think leaving animals in cages when you leave are always a bad idea no matter how wild they are.

That's awful. My condolences OP, it hurts to lose a dog.

It's so you have the option to easily control it with force if it doesn't have its leash on. Also a collar shows that it's someone's pet at a glance and a tag tells you everything you need to know to reunite it with its owner. Scanning a chip is an unnecessary extra step.

Agreed. Its also very easier to call the number on the tag than taking it to a vet when the pet is just lost around the corner or something. My dog escaped a ton but thanks to her collar, people called us and let us know they've had her. :3

Not even sure what the purpose of this post is, just to let it out I guess. Just got home from work. Set the mail down on our little puppies crate. Looked over to our big dog's crate to say hi to him, and saw him sitting up super stiff like. Apparently his dog collar got caught on the top of the crate and he strangled himself. I'm shook up a bit. Called my wife at work, she started bawling. She just got home. Got to take him down to the vet, they are going to send him somewhere to be cremated. Feels bad.

Sorry to read this, terrible losing a pet

Why is that a shocking statement, he's right. All my pets have break away collars for this exact reason.

It's not what he was trying to say, but the way he said it. "this is your fault" doesn't help someone grieving the loss of their pet.

I'm glad you use breakaway collars, my cats use them and my dog only wears a collar when I walk her.

my condolences chadderbox :( I lost my Pyr two years ago, I still feel that sometimes, amazing dogs. Orion is an awesome name for one.

Thought I should weigh in and say I've grown up with dogs my whole life. Yet never heard about taking a collar off a dog in a cage. Don't feel bad for not knowing that could of happened, I'm sure most people wouldn't know about that.

It's a horrible accident, don't look at it any other way. It's an accident, no one is to blame.

I didnt know people crate their dogs when their not home. That must suck for the dog

Its called crate training. Its beneficial for dogs. Very much so for those that suffer severe anxiety issues. You know the kind that go nuts when people leave them alone and they go around the home ripping up all sorts of things to keep them sated on their anxiety.
