Can a faulty hard drive be causing my PS3 freezes?

truly101

I got grudge sucked!
I've had an ongoing problem with certain games freezing on my PS3, and there are only two common things that tie them together; 1. they're 1st party Sony games 2. they cache data on the hard drive for loading or textures...or something. The games that constantly lock up are LBP, KZ2 and UC2. I used to have NBA2K9 and it froze often too, but I traded it for the 360 version. It also freezes if you try to boot up Home at all.

I've done all the troubleshooting I know. Reformatted the hard drive, restored default settings, did that thing where you hold down the power button for the 3 beeps to bring up the debug menu, etc. I even sent it in for repair, which it supposedly was, but the games still freeze (I'm sending it back under the 90 day warranty).

The games freeze within about 20 minutes of play, so I doubt heat has anything to do with it. I've played Batman:AA and Demon's Souls for hours on end and it never froze once. UC1 and InFamous seem to play fine as well. UC2 and KZ2 seem to be two of the more graphically intense PS3 games, so it makes me wonder if my hard drive has some issues trying to keep up with them. I have a 250 gb Hitachi drive that I bought pretty cheaply from new egg, it was a refurb. I'm wondering if its borked or maybe it doesn't have the optimal specs that those games might need for data cacheing? I don't know. I still have the original 20gb drive. I guess I could swap it out and see if it ever freezes on that. Anyone have any experience with this or is there something else going on.

That's very probable.

Do you have a PC with an extra SATA slot by chance? It's definitley worthwhile to take the Hard Drive out, hook it up to a PC, and run scandisk on it.

does your xmb ever go really slow when its loading up lists of demos etc on the hdd? mine started doing that just before the hdd died.

XMB seems to be fine, but yesterday, I had to reinstall Siren after reformating the drive and it completely froze.

I'm in the same boat as the OP. First thing I did when I got my Slim was slap in a 320GB Seagate and for the past month or so I'm having all sorts of issues crop up that are leading me to believe the HDD is going bad. The first symptom I came across is that it takes forever for the XMB theme and icons to show up after booting; 15 seconds minimum from when the default wavy lines theme begins to appear.

The weird thing is that I never noticed any issues in-game until recently, and most noticeably with AC2. It freezes up for a few seconds at a time, sound effects don't occur until seconds after the trigger point, and a bunch of other little things. Considering AC2 is hammering away at the HDD pretty much all of the time according to the activity LED, I think it's the HDD. I'm probably just going to do some research on what is a known, working 500GB HDD model and just slap that in. Then I'll take the one I think is bad and connect it to my PC and run some SMART testing on it to see if it's bad, and if so I'll RMA it.
