Can I use the PS3 HDD as an internal HDD for my desktop PC?

Basically I bought the GTAV bundle PS3 and I am finally retiring the original launch PS3. Since my Super Slim already comes with a 500GB HDD I wanted to use the 500GB in my launch PS3 for something else and put the original 60GB back in it. My PC is running out of space and I wanted to throw another HDD in there for more space for my Steam games.

A "PS3 HDD" is a 2.5" SATA laptop drive. So yes. The problem might be fitting it into the case so that it dosent slide around.

I don't see why not, you'll just have to reformat it.

Right click Computer, choose manage, click Disk Management, find the drive, right click on that for a list of options. You may have to initialize it before you can format it.

Well, it's a laptop drive, so you'd need either an adapter or a USB dock to use it all, and yes, you'd need to format it. But really, you wouldn't want to use it on a desktop because performance on laptop drives is lower than that of a typical full-sized drive.

To mount it internally, you need a full-size 3.5" adapter and a SATA cable. For external, you can purchase an external casing, either USB or eSATA. Not sure if USB will be as fast. Also, you need to format the drive. I think the PS3 uses a different file format than Windows. You can do this last, using the Disk Management tool in Windows.

I did this with my 40GB drive from my PS3, now I use it as portable storage. I have it in a USB case.
