Can someone explain why I can't play Crash/Spyro on Vita?

Bingo. There was a technical error awhile back that enabled people who bought the game to download it to their Vita and it worked flawlessly.

Licensing from what I understand. I think you can still put them on via a ps3 transfer, though.
Yeesh. That is rough. I dunno, but these and Megaman Legends 1 and 2 is all I want for every Christmas. Years of disappointment. Lol

And its purely a licensing issue since Sony "accidentally" hit a switch one night and suddenly all the non-Vita PSP and PS1 games suddenly worked with zero issue.

You would think that with Sony in bed with Activision for Call of Duty and Destiny, Activision would allow a minor thing like a bunch of old ass games to be playable on a dead handheld
Can't get them on vita at all in the US except for the glitch that allowed them to be downloaded for a couple days
You can backup it up on pc and it'll transfer flawlessly. Just in case you didn't know.

They work on EU/UK/AUS Vitas.
What's even more odd is that the copy of Spyro I-III on the Australian store is actually the US/NTSC version.

I learned about this too late, and ended up deleting a bunch of PSP/PS1 games that I got during the glitch. Luckily I still had the important ones so they're backed up to my pc, but kinda sucks that I'll never be able to get some of the others again unless I buy a ps3.
Kinda sucks taht companies don't find it worth their money or time to simply update the license for some of these games to work on the vita.

I wonder if Sony and Activision ever made an effort to sit down at the negotiating table to discuss this. I can't think of any downside to enabling these games to be playable on Vita. Is there any good reason why it shouldn't happen?

Weird that you have re-license for a different platform under emulation. Very weird.
It's really tough to future-proof licensing contracts, especially when you're involving hardware that doesn't exist at the time of the drafting.
Why does everyone assume I have a PS3 to transfer games with.

Nope. Lots and lots of stuff. Probably half my PSP games off of PSN don't work on my Vita and I was dumb enough to buy digital the last few years of the PSP's life because I thought for sure they'd all work on the PSP's successor....
Phantasy Star Portable 2 is the one the really pisses me off. I bought it and waited until the Vita came out to play it because I wanted the second stick. But then it didn't work. (At least until I hacked my Vita...)
It is! There was something fishy going with Activision & SCEA over Spyro & Crash. Everyother region has it. Maybe the asking price is too high. Maybe SCEA is still salty over PSABR licensing.

I find it odd. EU/PAL have the games and the Spyro games are even the US versions.
It goes the other way too. Last time I checked, Legend of Dragoon isn't on the EU PSN.

As others have said, they're all available direct from the Store in EU. Ironically the Spyro games are the NTSC versions and yet they don't work in the US!

At least the Crash IP still gets discussion around it (ND wanting to put a Crash game cameo in UC4), I have hope for the future.

There are a lot of really good games not Vita compatible. Legacy of Kain says hi. At least Soul Reaver transfers...
The fact that Sony is cool not having MGS on the Vita store is disgusting. Fuck Konami.
And yeah, some of the big exclusions will transfer. But a lot still don't, and the PS3 is a $200 machine still. That's a lot just to play MGS on the Vita.
And if you want to get extra mad, seminal PSP games like Crisis Core still aren't even on PSN. Period.
