Can Square save the Final Fantasy brand?

I think they need to go back to when the stories actually made somewhat of sense, and also stop taking forever to release your games. FFVS13 has been in development for what 6 years or 5? And it still hasn't dropped. People want that game, there are people who dont want anything to do with 13 proper and just want to play VS. So I think they need to stop all this other developing and get VS out the door already. But other then that, just calm down on the naming games FF when they clearly have nothing to do with the series proper.

Think you meant FF13-2, but if you didnt, the linearity is what killed FF13.

I've played good linear games. XIII is just torture to go through because of the poor writing.

Moms are tough, I'm a hero, etc.

Not a single sane person can actually defend the writing in XIII.

Most of the people I see complaining about how FF Sucks are dudebro lovers that don't play any other J-rpgs and just got caught on the fabulous VII/VIII/IX/X train back when they were teens.

Yeah, those games were amazing and everyone liked them even if they didn't like the genre, but seriously, I enjoyed XIII, I've spended over 100 hours in 3 runs of XIII-2 and I don't think FF needs saving. Well, I hate Toriyama as everyone, but games are still good

The brand is no longer a masterpiece for every gamer out there, is just a very good jrpg brand for the fans. I don't care if it sells 2-3Million instead of 10-12. I'll keep buyin' and playin' them day one while they amuse ME.

PS: Yes, my english sucks a bit, sry >.>

I liked XIII's mythos and thought that the game had good moments (Nautilus, Oerba, Pulse in general). But yes, Toriyama being fired is the way to save FF's stories. THE ONLY WAY.

On a side note, how was Type-0's story? I figure that, since Toriyama didn't sink his evil talons into that, it must have stood a chance, right?

Even just a simple un-scientific look at people's avatars would disprove this.

This. I hated XIII. So much so that I didn't even bother with XIII-2, and won't with any of its upcoming DLCs. (Why do those even exist!?)

Really looking forward to VersusXIII though. I'd rather them take the time to perfect it though. (It's their last chance as far as I'm concerned. If that sucks too, then I'm more or less done with new FFs.)

To be fair, I was talking more generally, This is GAF and GAFers are not the medium consumer of videogames.

And while here people complain about the flaws of last games, they still play them and enjoy them, just not as much as they wish

I love FFXIII. I find it to be one of the best games this generation. I've loved every FF (except 14.......) and I probably will continue to. For my tastes, FF doesn't need saving. And I don't want Square to change just because of the criticism.

But even so, sales are important. I understand I'm in a shrinking minority. For Square to be financially successful and to be able to continue to make games with as grand a scale and production as 7+ has made us accustomed to, FF kind of does need "saving".

But I am really concerned what Square would do to "save" it. I like FFXIII-2 quite a bit, but almost all the changes from XIII are negative to me. And the expensive and content-sparse DLC is of great concern to me.

XIII has far better gameplay then Xenoblade. It also a actually new and great system for a jrpg. People complain that jrpgs don't change, feel slow, and are incredibly tedious. Yet, non of that is in XIII. I can't help what actually surrounded that game. But the actual system is pretty much the best thing in a jrpg in the longest time. Perfectly balanced and without all the fluff. If anything it tells me that Square still delvers when it comes to actual gameplay.

Xenoblade is nothing come close to something like that. All it is, is a simple refinement of something that has worked in MMOs.

it's like my opinion, but the complete opposite

Face it ladies and gentlemen.

The last good final fantasy was 10 years ago, e.g FFX.

SQARE IS FUCKING DEAD.

Even FF13, as much as I like it, it's just not Final Fantasy anymore.

It doesn't need saving yet, but it's been hibernating since XII in my opinion.

After this:

I'll probably start thinking about a PLAN B.

The problem with FFXIII was that they made story the number1 priority for the game, but the story was actually terrible. They gave the excuse for the linearity by saying they focused on the story. If the story/cut scenes were fantastic, then I wouldn't have had any problem with XIII's linearity. But the story was terrible, and some of the characters were even worse.

Now square enix will need to do something special to get FF's reputation back up, but it is going to be very difficult and I don't think versus or VII remake would do much good.

I don't think versus would sell over a million copy in Japan unless they name it XV and make it actually really good.

Ambition, substance, emotion and character has been completely replaced with style - cheap, pandering, shallow, melodramatic style. The old guard is gone. Uematsu, Sakaguchi, Matsuno, and Kitase, together, were the "heart" of final fantasy. Nomura was the seasoning. Now that most of them have left, the series has lost a lot of it's heart.

(In fact, that void became so powerful that Nomura used it as a basis for an entirely new franchise, one in which final fantasy characters fight against physical representations of that which killed their series.)

But seriously, what Final Fantasy needs most is new blood to breath life back into the void left by Uematsu and Sakaguchi. It needs a visionary new producer who isn't afraid to experiment with ideas/themes that go directly against what the fanbase in Japan is used to/ or demands, and he needs to be someone capable of using Kitase effectively as director. A handful of talented writers are a necessity, as is a new character designer and new artists. Shigenori Soejima can't be the only one left.

Anyone else feel the opportunity to do a 2D Final Fantasy on the PSN and XBLA was completely squandered this gen. Imagine if they did a classic Final fantasy in the vein of FF6 with High Def retro art, and sold it for $15-$20.

As much as most of your statement is true, it's just hard to get producers like them compared to back when RPG was first born.

-Sigh-, why did SquareSoft ever died.

Would this be the "you're actually an alien who rides a mechanical whale, in order to kill the final boss you didn't know existed until the penultimate dungeon" era of sense? The "interplanetary war against a malevolent tree" era of sense? Or are we kicking it oldschool and going back to nuclear-armed robots in medieval fantasy, with a side of time paradox and completely linear boss rushes?

More churn would be nice, but FF "series proper" means absolutely nothing, so calling fewer things FF would hurt that. Announcement lead time needs to be cut down, and the FNC mess shouldn't be repeated.

I'm waiting out for Versus before I turn my back on the series. It looks promising and Nomura has a good track record.

FF X wasn't even a good game.

It's one of the best FFs so "good" is definitely an unfitting understatement.

While I agree with this, those guys weren't gonna last around forever. They needed competent and talented trainees to pass the torch to. Either that, or SE should have done everything it could to keep that dream team on lockdown. The management there fucked up big time by letting them all drift away.

They kinda did in FFIV Afteryears, which I enjoyed.

As I've said and many have echoed, it's time for the writing to grow up. We're not 12 anymore, but they still make games like we are.

Back in my day such opinions would have landed you jailtime. Seriously though, the only things I liked about FF X were Auron, Lulu's tits, Rikku looking somewhat attractive and the CG videos looking good. The rest was completely awful IMO, with Wakka being my single most hated video game character ever.

Now hold on now, when I look t the team behind Versus and the thought behind the project, I see the same virtues of the old order shining through in the new.

Surely I can't be the only one that feels this way?

What the... Hell no. Final Fantasy X is the worse FF game in that entire franchise in my opinion. I'd rather play XIII.

Final Fantasy is on the mend anyway if we're going by critical and word of mouth. Sale-wise, it's worrying. I'd think there's still a market for FF.

Hahaha good one.

You must have forgotten Vanille, the single most annoying character ever created in any medium.

FFX was excellent for it's time.

All I can just think about is.. why you mad bro?

**EDIT**

I can agree FFX-2 was pretty much stained the FFX series. So I agree on your part.

Really? More than Vaan, Snow, or Vanile? I dunno, there's so much with X that clicked. It just felt like a linear game done right. To each his/her own though.

What is that hideousness? That doesn't exist. Stop making stuff up.

I.. actually sort of liked Vaan and Vanille (especially when she'd make sex sounds during battles). Snow and Hope were far worse, but still nowhere near as bad as dudebro borderline retard Wakka was. As for the linearity, I initially hated it, but since I've actually had fun with FF XIII, godawful story and all, I don't think it would be fair to hold the linearity against X.

I actually have FF X-2, but I've never played it for more than 1 hour tops.
