Can Windborne compete and/or surpass Minecraft?

What was wrong with it? I remember people going crazy over it for a little while.

The developer took the money and ran from what I understand. there hasnt been an update in almost a year. They just left it in the buggy beta stage that it was.. its pretty depressing because it had potential.

My PC cant even play it for more than 10 minutes without some weird bug freezing the game up.

Edit: Apparently the developer finally posted about an update in January but it has still yet to be released.

Problem is that no games of the "Minecraft genre" could even reach something that comes near Minecraft. They understand the base of the game (manipulating to world, gathering ressources, building stuff) but then they leave it at that. All the while Minecraft constantly add stuff. Windborn is in need of a BOAT LOAD more stuff to even get near where Minecraft is. And if it ever reach that point, its only there that we are going to start being able to tell if the game can now surpass Minecraft.

So that Joystiq article in the OP spends the entire preview listing off complaints and problems with the game, and then they cap it all off with:

Overall, my time with Windborne left me with the impression that it's shaping up quite well, but in all honesty, I think many of the planned features for the game will change its entire dynamic, and it's obviously too early to tell how that will pan out.

I don't think people should preview or review Early Access games anymore. The game has problems, but it's too early to tell. The game shows promise, but it's too early to tell. The game is clunky, but it's too early to tell. The game is(n't) fun, but it's too early to tell.

It's too early to tell anything about the game

I never heard of Windborne until this post.

I never heard of Minecraft before that became big either.

With that said, hell no. It would be like expecting a GTA clone to top GTA in popularity. It doesn't matter if it's a better game. Being first and having that brand recognition matters.

If you can pay money for it you should be able to review it.

I think I must be the last person on earth who has never even tried Minecraft... I'm curious of course but I've never felt compelled enough to buy it... probably also because I'm not particularly attracted to huge timesinks and spending a lot of time to customize my experience with a game besides some rare exceptions

Never heard of that game before, and looks boring after watching it. Well, it's still Alpha, right.
Played Minecraft but was never addicted by that game, it become boring super quickly.
