Can you still buy a PS2 slim?

hey, I recently got a PS2 slim for the first time so this is kind of a good thread for me. Currently playing Dragon Quest VIII and I wanna pick up Persona 4. There's so many RPGs for this thing, it's kind of intimidating

Call me crazy, but Sony should price drop the system down to idk $70 and rerelease the system in different colors. I'm telling you it would sell like hotcakes, and even at $70 Sony would have to still be making money.
They should do something kind of like Majesco did with the Genesis 3 in the late 90's. Rerelease the console at $50 alongside a small library of reprints of some of its best games at $10-20.

It's kind of silly to me that PSP has had an official $10 range of reprints, yet PS2 never did. Especially considering DVDs are definitely much cheaper to press than UMDs.

I just think that the PS2 should remain in stores by virtue of the following facts:

- PS3's no longer have backwards compatibility
- Affordable $100 price point
- Arguably the best library of games of any console
- Doubles as a very pretty, space-efficient DVD player for bedrooms and such

I'm still trying to decide on whether or not I'll order one of these from the Sony store. It seems ridiculous to me now, but I feel like I'll be glad to have it years after they're fetching $300+ on Ebay. This last redesign of the slim model, in particular (90001CB) seems like it will be very hard to find down the line.

No one is buying $100 dvd player... It's a dead console man, they're not making anymore for a reason. Most retailers don't even sell ps2 games.

C'mon, man. Just look at this thing:

That deserves to live by virtue of its design alone.

Sure, if you want sony to really go out of business maybe.

My local gamestop sells used ones. But if you check your local flea market or yard sales, you might get lucky and find one super cheap.

We will never see such a perfect storm of a console again.

A perfect storm of global appeal, amazing third- and first-party support, and helping boost DVD sales during the advent of the format.

I feel like the PS3 could have been a similar success if not for that $599 launch price.

This is the model I'm looking for:

Ugh I'm not a fan of the second slim model. The power and reset buttons can be a bigger pain in the ass then the first gen ones. The only advantage is the lack of power brick. I'm perfectly happy with my silver model, Despite the fact I inadvertantly scratched the shit out of it. Blocking all the sensors so I could use a swap disc to play the ps2 berserk game was kind of a pain in the ass though.

I've never actually used the second slim model, so I can't speak for the usability of the revised power/open buttons. I do think that it looks slightly more refined that the original slim model, however, and the lack of a power brick makes an already compact system even more portable and tidy.

I've been staring at that Sony Store ordering page since yesterday. I still haven't decided whether or not it would be worth it to place the order.

For me trying to find a new PS2 is a pain in the ass in the US.
All I can ever find are Used. Then buying online they have a markup of 50 bucks.
Sorry I don't want to pay the same price for a PS2 as the wii currently is.

All I need it for is my older games, good thing my Phat is currently holding strong.

See my post from earlier if you want a new PS2 for $99.

Alright, it looks like the Sony Store website still allows you to order a new PS2 at retail price. They are currently out of stock, but I called their hotline and they said that all orders will be fulfilled. They weren't able to provide me with an estimated ship date, however.

Here's the link to the Sony Store PS2 page.

I am still debating whether or not I want to drop $100 on a system that I already have, albeit in an older form. It's just so damn pretty and portable, though.

Nice, will definetly keep this bookmarked for when this phat finally gives up on life.

Well, there's no telling when they will finally stop producing the PS2 altogether and remove the Add to Cart option from that page. I am considering ordering one just to have it for the future, even though I also still have a functional phat PS2.

If you keep an eye out, you might get lucky. I was in Sears probably 6~ months ago and saw one with the Justice League movie for $25 bucks.

Also found one a little over a year ago at some other store (really can't remember) for $40, picked it up as well. Don't think I can have too many.

If you have any Blockbusters nearby you might check there, when the last one near me was getting ready to close, they had them at 30% off, passed on that.

Yeah. I'd like for them to announce when it is about to end production, but Sony seems to be letting the PS2 quietly die. I suppose the thing is over 12 years old at this point.

I was holding out hoping it would drop below $100. Guess it never will.

I'm telling you. Drop that thing to like $50-$70, and I bet a ton of people would go buy another one just because.

Yes, indeed. I just counted. I have 175 PS2 games. 175. And there are so many games on the system I still haven't bought. I don't own any Ratchet and Clank games. I never bought FFX...

Once again. All of those are marked up in price AND they are the older version of the PS2 slim. We are talking about finding the last redesigned models of the slim PS2. The SCPH-90001. So far, you either have to live in a small town or order from the Sony Store web site and wait for them to restock.

Seems like they are phasing them out. German retail have a couple in stock, major online retailers only through 3rd parties.

Any cheap PS2s in the UK?

If you don't mind used ones and potentially unboxed ones, try Cash Converters. I found a slim (with the power block) for ÂŁ20 which I proceeded to buy, and it was beside a vanilla version which they were selling for ÂŁ10. Good luck finding new versions of a 12 year old console, however.

I don't see the OP requesting a particular model at a particular price. If you just want a back-up for BC there's nothing wrong with that, apart from extremely minor cosmetic change.

If you're being extremely specific about some model of a 12yo console, I think it's not really unexpected that it's going to be rare and likely more expensive.

Guess that's not fine either as it's a jpn version?

...Huh. Anyone tried this? How often do they restock? Thread's got me spooked, I'd be quite disappointed if my current slim dies before I get to all the PS2 games in my backlog and I can't manage to replace it with one in decent shape. I've been meaning to buy a backup system but just never got around to it.

I don't want to order this thing and then have it take a year to ship to some old/inaccurate address or something...

I called Sony to ask if they knew how long it would take for the new PS2 to ship, and they couldn't tell me an exact date. They did say, though, that all orders will be fulfilled. So it's not like you risk placing the order and then never getting it.

Where exactly and what store? I'm trying to fin one.

The store where I found mine is called Bodega Aurrera. They usually always have some kind of promotion when it comes to videogames (XBOX 360 at $150 dlls, PS3 at $250, even sometimes DS lites at $100 or less. For those that are reading this and think that those are normal prices, remember, I live in Mexico, where the normal price for those is almost twice that)

Hmm...

If I can't find anything locally, I'll take the plunge and report back w/r/t shipping times. Thanks for the information.

That would be cool. I couldn't find anything locally, so I am on the fence about dropping the $100 on the Sony Store web site. If I decide to place the order either today or tomorrow, I'll post whatever feedback I get from Sony with regard to my order.

Why would the most recent revision be rare and more expensive? Pretty sure it usually works the opposite way.

I'm from Argentina, and the PS2 didn't start selling officialy until June 2009. It's still selling in many major stores now. The PS3 begun officialy selling in March 2011.

You could get them unofficialy since the US (or Japanese) Launch Day through some small stores.

There is no Official Sony or Microsoft (Games division) in Argentina, only a private company that imports directly from sony and are called Sony Style. The xbox360's that are brought in, are without official support, and bordering illegal means. Let's just say it's a gray area in our importing law..

Nintendo left Argentina after the launch of the Wii, but only after 2010 the console begun circulating in many stores...

So yeah, here, you can buy a PS2, an original one from Sony Style (and the mega stores where they have stands), or the chipped one from almost any small store.

Piracy goes rampant here in Argentina, specially with Xbox360 and PS2, PS1.

Grim picture indeed for us Argentinian Gamers...

Why would the most recent revision be rare and more expensive? Pretty sure it usually works the opposite way.

Because I'm pretty sure that the most recent revision had a smaller production run than that of the original PS2 slim, since it came out well into the PS3's lifecyle (2007 or 2008, I believe).

So while the retail price of the newer one is still technically $99, virtually no retail stores carry it anymore. Now that it's pretty much online only, the newer one is gonna be harder to find and thus more expensive.
