Canceled Games "leaked" or "preserved" thanks to the web

its not playable

My question is, how or who uploaded/distributed/leaked these unfinished games?

I never understood why there are so many "leaks" yet there are rarely stories of said leaker being caught.

I've signed several NDA's and have never been tempted to leak information. What do you win? So called bragging rights? What do you lose? Trust, if caught I guess.

Still shocked about Star Fox 2. Yes, I know it didn't sell like a AAA game but my friends and I loved Star Fox. Same with Earthbound aka Mother

Half-Life Dreamcast is a strange one. The game was finished and basically ready to ship. Why did it get cancelled?

I've played it. Its a finished product. No idea why it never got released.

Edit: Speaking of which, does anyone have, let's say "access" to a working version of P&T S&M? It was one of the few reasons I got a Sega CD, and it never came out :-(

Yeah it's out there. It was pretty much nearly finished and then the company went bankrupt, then legal issues happened between P&T and the publisher and that killed it. A full review copy got leaked years back.

Developers occasionally do it directly themselves because they want the game that they worked years on to be seen by the public. Often this is anonymous, so they get the benefit of being able to say "Hey I worked on that" without saying "Hey, I leaked that."

Then there are groups of people like myself who find the games from other sources. Many have come from magazines who received them for preview or review and never sent them back. Others come from items that walked out of the studio either with a developer or someone cleaning up the mess that was left behind after a closure.

Jelly Boy 2?

It's actually a very good game and it's definitely in a playable, near complete state. It's a shame it never saw a proper release.

Nobody will post this, so I thought I would. I'm one of the Unseen64 staff and last year, I worked on preserving the cancelled sequel to Stranglehold.

I loved Midway Chicago's output under Brian Eddy's lead. We lost a really good studio in the transition to Warner Bros. Stranglehold was a lot of fun, and I still hold onto a glimmer of hope for the revival of the Psi-Ops IP. It's probably not a popular opinion, or financially feasible, but I'd much rather have that version of the studio than the Mortal Kombat churning, fighting-game-regurgitating NetherRealm.

I completely agree with you, actually!

Was really excited for this because I loved the starcraft games! I will never let it go...
Just kidding, I already forgot about it....

Almost failed my business law midterm when I discovered Propeller Arena. Such a shame that it wasn't properly released. Would have loved to have been able to play it online.

It was Midway's weird attempt to merge Stranglehold and Wheelman. The prototype for it had Vin Diesel and Chow Yun Fat in a fully co-operative shooter with lots of destructible environment tech going on. Kind of fun to play.

Why can't video games have a "so dumb it's great" type of genre and demographic

Probably wrong here but wasnt the leaked version unoptimized, and therefore not the final version?

Heard that the official strategy guide book was even on sale.

holy shit

setting reminds me of the killer too

I know there is. But 8 minutes isn't really a whole lot. Nor is 30 that some have. And most if not all were posted prior to the Xbox One's release.

Just figured that if you were prioritizing, you might want to focus on something that no one's seen before rather than something that'll get buried in the YT search.

A 360 vs One split screen comparison would be neat, though that would take a good deal of effort to produce.

It's not very high on my priority list to be honest hah, I have plenty of other stuff to go through still.

Mini Racers for the N64 is another game in this category. It's a topdown-style racing game on the N64, canned at completion because the developer was going under and Nintendo chose not to publish it (even though they originally were going to). But it's a good game, and really should have released! I'd been interested in it for years, but finally the game actually leaked finally, so now it can be played. It's always great to see games escape cancellation, particularly finished quality games like Propeller Arena or Mini Racers.

Good mentions so far.

Mine's Gauntlet for the DS. Watch Double Fine's Devs Play episode to find out more about its history straight from the horse's mouth. This game was basically a finished product and then simply not officially released. Very sad for fans of the series. It even has functioning multiplayer, which the video also demonstrates!

Has this actually publicly leaked? If so I really want to try it, I'm a big Gauntlet fan and was definitely looking forward to the DS game. At least it's preserved, though, either way (on whether it's leaked or not).

I dont think this game qualifies as one that will be lost forever :P
Are you saying it might leak someday? That'd be pretty fantastic. I hope you're not referring to Star Fox Adventures, that's really not the same thing at all.

As for N64 Rare, Twelve Tales: Conker 64 exists out there somewhere too, I'd love to see it leak publicly!

Yeah, losing most of MIdway's main studio really was a shame. Midway had made some pretty great games, and that Stranglehold sequel looks like it could have been pretty good as well. It's really too bad that everything at the main studio other than the Mortal Kombat team got shut down; I know Midway was closing, and some of those people were fired before the shutdown, but they could have brought more teams back if they'd wanted to... there clearly was talent at Midway, they just needed better direction, since Midway had lost its way after leaving the arcade game business.

I never posted it on GAF, but I did a little Midway history article last year: http://www.blackfalcongames.net/?p=105 I was a fan of Midway because of great stuff like Atari Games' titles under their leadership (Gauntlet Legends is such an amazing game, and the SF Rush series as well!), but yeah, also some of Midway's own games as well.
