Can't decide between DQ VII and DQ VIII

30+? Isn't VII the one that's like 120 hours long or something crazy? I'm very excited to finally play it next year though! And VIII again!

Both DQ7 and 8 -each- took me between 120-130 hours to fully complete respectively(PS1/PS2 versions). That did include completing all sidequests and content(mini-medals, arenas, monster hunts, shard recovery, optional dungeons, etc...). Any playtime beyond that would have to be for purely personal satisfaction(mastering all jobs or whatever).

Mainlining the games would dramatically cut down the overall playtime to a mere fraction(DQ8 significantly less so, but DQ7 is overloaded with so much forced filler that it kind of loses the plot too often with its extra bloat).

Much preferred DQ8 personally, but it really just comes down to the details(as both are eminently enjoyable on their strengths alone). DQ7 on PS1 just had so many pacing and quality of life issues which too often pushed my motivation to the brink. With the supposed fixes in the 3DS port, it may change my opinion. (Or at least my memories of one I played 15 years ago).

This thread was a great read. I'm definitely buying both as I'm a hungry Dragon Quest newcomer (still on my first playthrough of V for DS which I adore) who hasn't played either (and thought neither, especially VII 3DS, would be brought over, definitely want to support both 100%) but it's very helpful to know the key differences. The vignettes in DQ VII have me very intrigued as I love mini character side stories. How do the Streetpass features in these games work?

While 7 is a notoriously long game and the longest non mmo game in the series (though arguably 9 has more content through its grotto system) 8 can't be slept on for its length. 6-8 are a trilogy of much longer games than the series norm.

Some people claim its all due to the battle speed/load times of the PS2 version but its not the entire story, the game is just big.
