Capcom Vancouve: “We need to make changes so that there can be a Dead Rising 5,6&7"

"Steve Jobs said it best when he said: "A lot of times, people don't know what they want until you show it to them"."

That Steve Jobs quote was missing the first line, the bit where Jobs says it is hard to design products by focus groups. But Nickolls actually found focus testing useful when it came to implementing changes into a franchise that has such a dedicated group of fans.

hoo boy

Reminds me of another time Capcom defended all the changes they were making with bullshit statements...started with a D

The irony of making a game the developers say is about consumerism and yet talking about a 5th, 6th, and 7th game of more of the same. Do they have no self-awareness?!

I would prefer if they kept the cinematic, dark and brooding stuff out of this game series. I really liked the campy nature of Dead Rising 2 and wished that they would at the very least have tried emulating the first game more instead of expanding on whatever it was they were trying to do with the 3rd game.

I really hope Microsoft has some kind of ad blitz for the game...

DmC's troubled PR at least had the decency to be purposefully insulting. This interview is an all-out war against my intelligence and people involved seem to have zero self-awareness in every respect.

I'm not going to lie: this level of jackassery is so precise and mathematical that one has to wonder if this wasn't all manufactured in a laboratory in Vancouver.

I never thought I would say this, but man, do I miss Inafune right about now.

They aren't, it's going more targeted and contained than mass with this one. Tough launch window plus they haven't had massive success with their first party titles lately.

marcus taking the doo rag off again and looking at the two halves of a recently chainsawed locust like "maybe I'm the bad guy here"

Capcom Vancouver has been known as the Dead Rising studio. It was handed the franchise following the success of the first game - which was made by Capcom's Japanese team. That game became a hit in the West for its weird, campy-style, which was something the development team wasn't actually aiming for. So it decided it would be best to let a Western studio handle the series from then on in.
God, this is the most Capcom thing.

Gears 4 is loved by the fans both new and old. This new Dead Rising isn't out yet and is already divisive. Not a good comparison.

Im not sure though. Going to have to take a lot to get me back in as well as others I guess. They lost me at 2 personally since that was the last one I bought.

Dead Rising has felt like it's been on the chopping block for awhile. Feels like a series that just make it past what's needed sales wise compared to their budget.

Did they not play the first game on a series that they have been working on all this time? They made the zombie virus while experimenting how to make more beef. The old crazy professor guy even says, "DO YOU KNOW HOW MUCH BEEF AMERICANS EAT!?!?!?!" The series has been poking fun of consumerism since the inception and obviously rips of George Romero which ripped on that exact theme.

The 2nd game freaking had an American Gladiator rip off killing zombies on mass, obviously poking fun at our entertainment industry and reality shows.

"The message behind the game is around consumerism and Black Friday, and we're asking: who is the monster? The zombies running around or is it what caused everyone to fight each other and demand these products and services? I often say this is not the thinking man's game, but there are some messages in there that might make you think a little bit more than usual."

What a hilarious quote.

"Steve Jobs said it best when he said: "A lot of times, people don't know what they want until you show it to them"."

Actually, I know exactly what I want. It's pretty similar to Dead Rising 1 and nothing at all like Dead Rising 4.

G4 is down like 75% in revenue to Gears 3.

Dead Rising can either evolve, and go up... or die here

lol, make your new shitty Dead Rising all you want, but don't bash your previous 3 titles that got you there.

Every thread about this game lowers my opinion of it more and more. Way to go Capcom

Remember all those franchises that had a solid fan base built around an interesting and unique game identity, and then they successfully transitioned to attracting the Call of Duty market instead?

I don't.

It would be incredible if the 1 and 2 remasters ended up outselling Dead Rising 4. This is probably unlikely, but it would make me so happy.

He continues: "Often, the people that are the most vocal are the ones that have something negative to say. It is always the way. We had some feedback from Microsoft where people thought Dead Rising 3 had a lot of sexual overtones, which they didn't really dig. They didn't want all that sex and off-colour stuff, and they challenged us as to why we painted that transgender person in a bad light. So we decided not to go that way with this game."

"that transgender person"

it was a female bodybuilder and the studio head doesn't actually know that

A December Xbox exclusive with almost no marketing.
I dunno, things aren't exactly looking up.

"that transgender person"

Yeah it's obvious that the head people working on the game didn't even bother playing the series and just asked for some highlights.

Everyone loves to shit on Inafune and then you remember he made all your favs. I keep telling people, he was the brains of this series.

The difference is Gears isn't going away. Dead Rising? This could be it.

You know, Ellie, we really are the Last of Us.

You know, Clem, we really are the Walking Dead.

You know, Frank, consumerism really is the Dead Rising.

I guarantee all three of those writers saw this interview and this quote from their boss and are currently strangling the air in front of them

Ha, made me laugh, but narrative is only one way to grow a franchise, and usually not the best way. I'm not implying this approach is the right one, just that I place value in the strategy

Oh my god, perfect.

I miss Left 4 Dead so much ):

That's not... forward-thinking at all... Adding 5th grade "deepness" into your story is anything but that

Sorry but none of this sounds good....

I don't really want a 5th, 6th, or 7th of ANY game with such a clearly defined formula as Dead Rising.

And three writers? That's not necessarily good.... especially when they're bragging about how one of them worked on the latest Deus Ex, which had frankly fucking awful writing. It was hands down the worst part of an otherwise quite good game.

Sounding like a big whiner but sometimes these companies gotta get real about what is and isn't working.

The message on consumerism is clear: nobody is going to buy this game.

" The timer... some people don't care about the timer, some people hate the fact that it's not in the game, some people hated the timer and love the fact we've got rid of it. So what do we do? Well, we put the timer in multiplayer, and then put it back in towards the end of the game, where we think it matters."
What? How does that make any sense?

No one plays a Dead Rising game for the story. They might love the characters but the story is just typical zombie shit you've seen.

Everyone loves to shit on Inafune and then you remember he made all your favs. I keep telling people, he was the brains of this series.

I know he pissed a lot of people off with his comments about Japanese development, and Mighty No. 9 speaks for itself, but he had a pretty strong guiding arm when he was the head of development at Capcom, which led to a nice variety of titles that were powered by world-class technology in the form of MT Framework. I still love the company because of Monster Hunter, but man, it's only been a decade since the beginning of that period and it feels so much longer than that.

You don't play games for story because you play them for gameplay, but there are plenty of data to suggest that a strong emotional attachment aids with retention for certain segments of the market.

If you want expanded audience consumers, creating a strong relatable narrative hook/lore around your fantasy is sometimes a good way to onboard new combats (who get turned off being introduced to new games by mechanics, modes, or features). Helps with marketing and if done well in game, retention for single player games. Which has lots of ancillary benefits.

Again, I'm not saying this is the right tactical approach specifically for DR as much as I'm saying I'm for the overall strategy to keep a franchise on the fence going

They really threw the old writer under the bus, I'd be pissed if I were them.

Seriously. Like, I laughed a number of times playing Off the Record. It's a game about a guy who sticks knives in boxing gloves and puts dinosaur mask bombs on zombies. It wasn't supposed to be The Old Man and the Sea.

It took three "real" game writers to make this game's plot and THAT is what they came up with. I never thought about it before with Dead Rising, because it clearly never asked me too. Not even a big fan of this series, but seeing the fan reaction to new frank and what not showed me why I should care after reading this as well.

Sucks for the fans who wanted the old themes. Hopefully the game itself is good and these comments are not a big deal overall...

Ha, now it's up you, consumers, to make 5, 6, and 7 happen. Even if the reviews suck, they could be lying, so you have to buy the product and see for yourself. Also, the story is about consumers and how stupid they are.
