Capcom Vancouve: “We need to make changes so that there can be a Dead Rising 5,6&7"

Having played all the trade demo's I really think this is the first game that almost scraps the skeleton - the core DNA from the franchise. I just don't see this as Dead Rising as much anymore.

It feels more like a Chop Till You Drop style spin off. But with a more open world.

It's very strange actually thay the scale has been brought back from DR3s sprawling city to DR4s tamer Willamette

Who's the monster, the zombies or the Black Friday shoppers? Deep, man. So deep. Glad they hired so many quality writers to really give us that thinking man's narrative.

Hahah, so true. I can't be the only one that thought of this Futurama moment when reading the OP:

As an aside, I really hate it when writers (or people in general) try to be deep far beyond their writing (or thinking) skills.

Most games don't need, or benefit from, fake intellectual depth, particularly aimed at such a safe target as consumerism. But of course nobody would risk writing an AAA game with a truly controversial topic, so that's what we get.

I re-read the OP to find something that would warrant most of the over the top mean spirited reaction here, but I still don't see it. I guess it's pretentious to make an effort to improve the quality of the writing in their games, and therefore fuck them for giving a shit?

As far as my post goes, they talked about elevating video game writing by using a zombie trope from the 70's.

This is exactly what I thought. So, they're just regurgitating Romero's message and pretending it's new.

Pretty much yeah. It's not enough to not do much to evolve zombie writing, but to actually claim that reuse of decades-old tropes is bold and compelling.

This rheodoric feels very very similar to what was being said before Lost Planet 3 came out...

But they fucking substantially succeeded with LP3, even though they had no right to

Game has one of the best narratives of last gen and was woefully underrated in that regard :(

I didn't think it was possible to be any more disinterested in this title. Also not a fan of how they slighted their previous writer.

?? DMC is a great game. I know is not the same character but if the game's good who cares.

A lot of people, believe it or not. Point is, people get pissed when other people come in and change things that don't need to be changed, especially when they proclaim themselves the saviours of the franchise. If I see one article blaming consumers of killing the Dead Rising franchise because they didn't buy this, I'm going to... Well, I won't do much, but I'll be quietly pissed off at that person until the end of time.

If I was one of the current or previous writer I would be pretty offended by this interview. They got "real videogame writers" this time. Really nice for the previous people. Then come along the explanation of the deep and compelling plot about consumerism and Black Friday. Poor writers.

I like how they took the worst approach to everything. Bring back fan's favorite Frank West but make sure he doesn't look and sound like the original. Don't bring back the timer and let's add regenerating health because we want people bad at the original to play even if it means alienating long time fans. Let's remove the coop newer wanted and put it instead in that extra dumb multiplayer mode.

Willl the series come back to Capcom Production Studio 1 if Vancouver's DR4 flop hard?

I don't think Capcom Japan has any interest. If DR4 flops then they'll either reboot the next game or they'll send the series to the Capcom storage shed.

Look at the other franchises last gen that Capcom had western developers work on like Lost Planet, Devil May Cry, and Bionic Commando. None of these have had new entries yet and the only one that I think has a chance is DMC (mainly cuz Itsuno still works at Capcom). As for these other franchises, I'm just not sure they have people in Japan that wanna work on them.

Ah god just thinking about Dead Rising 5, 6 and 7 makes me feel tired.
Always find it funny when people say this as especially Capcom used to shove out sequels much, much more frequently during PS1 and PS2 days.

I used to like DR but it just became too bloated. Was never a fan of the custom weapon creation.

I think a big problem of the series is that DR1 basically was the absolute perfection of the invented formula. It was obvious that they had to make it bigger for the sequels but that watered down everything.

I may check out DR4 now that they've scaled it back again, however I don't have much hopes for it. Will wait for reviews.

I'm gonna say it will be more divisive. Also expecting this to bomb.

I don't think it'll bomb, but who knows how much Capcom is expecting? I think it'll sell more or less like DR3, maybe a bit less because DR3 was a launch title and had less competition. DR4 seems like a very safe game, so people that just want another zombie killing action game will get it and like it.
