Capcom was Sega's biggest hardware supporter

Cyberbots, Vampire Saviour, SFZ 1-3, MMX 3&4, Pocket Fighters...

I want my Saturn era Capcom back... T_T

Yeah, geez going over these titles, it really highlights how much things have dwindled. Every studio seems to release less these days per generation.

Got folks waiting 2 gens for a FF7 port when we used to get 3 entries per gen + spinoffs like Tactics.
 
One could argue Activision was Sega's biggest hardware supporter. They were on Master System, Genesis, Sega CD, 32X, Saturn, and Dreamcast. And they licensed games to Sega on SG-1000.
 
NAOMI meant easy arcade ports, and lots of them. That said, they also ported stuff that ran on CPS2, like the sublime Mars Matrix.

I never gave a fuck for sega until the DC. Then all of my friends own at least one thanks to me and capcpom excellent arcade ports. MAHVEL BAYBEE indeed.
 
Resident Evil 1 didn't get released on the Saturn until 1.5 years after it released on PS1. RE: Director's Cut released on PS1 1 month after the original RE1 release on Saturn!

No RE2 on Saturn really sucked as well, although you can't put that one on Capcom.

Capcom didn't support the Saturn or the Dreamcast with their main selling games really. I also say Atlus was just as good if not better on the Saturn myself.

I loved Atlus stuff on the Saturn
 
Also Sega treated 2d arcade console ports like premium products.

Sony snubbed those games and only published them later as collections.
 
As already answered Sega consoles after Mega Drive were ideal for 2D games in an age in which 2D was phasing out and for arcade games both kind of games that were still being produced by Capcom in the late '90s.

Thinking back to Saturn and Dreamcast, I can't think of any other 3rd party that supported these consoles more than Capcom did. Is there a particular reason why? I can't recall their games selling like gangbusters on those systems.

Because the saturn was a 2D powerhouse and most of capcom's arcade output was 2D.

I also heard that relations between Sega and Capcom soured after the Dreamcast. Is this true?

lol, what kind of relationship would you expect them to have? Not like Sega had any platforms for Capcom to produce games for anymore at that point.

It's really not all that hard to answer. All the genres they excelled in went out of style. Aracde-driven action games, fighting games, character driven action-platformers. Suddenly there was no room in the world for the likes of Mars Matrix, Street Fighter, and Mega Man. Their downfall was pretty much the same as Sega's.

Resident Evil was popular, but they pushed survival horror to its breaking point with so many sequels and sidestories. Devil May Cry was superb but couldn't really pick up the slack for so many other genres that were considered passe.
