Capcom's Deep Down 1080p HQ directfeed - welcome to nextgen

Why do people keep assuming this is Dragon's Dogma 2?

I really don't think it is.

For a start, one of the strap-lines is 'Conquer your fear' and the title Deep Down suggests something more like a survival-horror game.

And if that is really what it is - a survival horror game set under-ground in Medieval fantasy-times, I'm really, really excited.

Yep, sounds like dragon's dogma to me

That would be... fucking incredible. I really like Dragon's Dogma, but would prefer your idea!

I'm sure as hell that that isn't CGI.
It's so full of artifact that I can spot without even looking for them, and I'm not the type that analizes every frame pixel by pixel, they're just very noticeable.
So, either this is gameplay/in-engine or they went out of their way to make some really bad CGI.

The fake HUD is just stupid though, if you want people to believe that that is gameplay, just play the game.

it was but I thought I read here that other devs at the show were asked and said that WASN'T possible on the new systems, as a game, unless it was like 1 room by 1 room for the entire game. They seemed to be pretty clear that no that wasn't possible.

If they were wrong...I can't wait for the next gen systems.

Read my other post. I too have my doubts whether you will actually be able to play this in real time.

Do people SERIOUSLY think that tech hasn't advanced in the last 8 years since the release of 360 and PS3?

What did you expect? Wii U leap was not indicative of what newer tech can do, of course this was real-time and completely achievable on PS4.

Think of this as a real-time rendered cutscene like the ones in RE5, it's not direct gameplay footage but it is rendered by the hardware.

Some spots do look like they could be gameplay, when the character is running, the camera is pulled back to a more gameplay looking one. This is only the beginning, we'll see some absolutely incredible stuff in terms of visuals in the next 10 years!

Couple of specs about the video:

It's been re-encoded from a master copy in H264 with 11.2 Mbps video bitrate, 1080p at 30 FPS, and low quality 192 Kbps AAC-LC Stereo audio.

While it may be realtime footage, the encode suffers from compression and banding issues, among others. For example, take a look at the sky between the dragon's wings:

Essentially, the real deal is going to look a good bit better than this video.

Sorry ya I was agreeing with you. My fault I didn't make sense in how I quoted.
Adding in all the game bits I still don't doubt it will be all kinds of impressive in the new machines.

They're gonna pull a bait and switch.

There's no way PS4 can render that fire in real time.

It's running on a pc am 100% sure it's running on some high spec pc like all these new middle ware engine debuts (unreal4,crysis,frostbite,Unity 4,fox,luminos).

Capcom games traditionally may have the best fire effects but this just way to far of a jump for it be real.

Videogame is all about trickery... What if the fire isn't full particles, but some kind of 3d object reacting to collisions with tessellation on top of it and some particles for example ?

If next gen games don't look like that when why even bother with the investment and the technical upgrade? I don't know if I'm just spoiled by pc gaming and great image quality, but I see nothing that I don't expect from consoles which call themselves "next gen machines". I didn't find KZ4 demo very impressiv and this one neither, but it's better at least.

I love pretty graphics as must as the next person, but eventually you stare at that long enough... it becomes, ok now that's outta the way... show me something next-gen in gameplay, or new, or fun that I haven't been able to do before

I think that the latter would be computationally more expensive and harder to create than the former.

I'm really getting that vibe from the teaser.

But judging by people's reactions - IS Dragon's Dogma set in parts in underground dungeons with horror-like segments?

I don't actually know as I haven't played it!

I think some are forgetting that Capcom is almost always at the forefront of in-game fire tech. RE4, RE5, and Dragon's Dogma all had stellar looking fire effects. I don't find it hard to believe at all that they've managed to make fire that good looking on the PS4 tech.

Dragon's Dogma definitely has a few areas that are like that, one place in particular called Everfall is essentially one giant underground catacomb filled with all sorts of monsters and creatures that will properly fuck your shit up if you're unprepared/under-leveled.

I have a top of the line PC with a GTX690 and I haven't seen this level of detail or lighting fidelity in ANY game or tech demo I've tried.

My PC could handle it no doubt but no one has done anything that looks this good yet, that's why consoles are awesome. Fixed hardware means it can be pushed to the fullest!

Because that's what this obviously is. They won't want all that huge effort they put into Dragon's Dogma go to waste, so they are trying again. Maybe it'll be (as the name implies) more about dungeon crawling to deep caves with horrible monsters and less traversing in the open, but I'm fairly certain this will be an open-world action RPG like DD.

Well you could argue that the nighttime effects were handled in a way to breed a bit of terror. And Dragons Dogma 2: Deep Down isn't a bad name. Also though there was some underground sections I felt that there wasn't as much as I expected so it could really be an interesting take.

Fighting a dragon where the fire behaves exactly (or very closely) to real fire?

Yeah thats a first and someone nobody has "been able to do before."

Sure some games have "good" fire but with these advanced systems you can actually have it behave just like real fire. Same goes for water, etc.

I'm telling everyone now, the real advancements we're going to see in gameplay will be driven by:

- Scale (size of game worlds, number of NPC's or players, imagine the next Deus Ex with 1000 npc's wandering the city and hundreds of cars and futuristic vehicles)

- Physics (imagine blowing up the support struts of a skyscraper in GTA 6 and watching it topple into other buildings. Imagine a map in the first true next gen CALL OF DUTY where you're in an Aquarium and as bullets hit the tanks they begin to splinter and flood into the level ultra realistically. Sharks swimming around, etc.)

In my opinion, the above is where the true next gen innovations in gameplay will come from.

Capcom has been amazing with engines, I agree. But I can't take any sizzle reel footage as proof. I need to see it being played.

Yeah, this and Agni's Philosophy tech demos show visuals quite a notch above anything currently on PC, including Crysis 3. It's because noone, not even Crytek are specifically targetting the highest end gpus only

Best looking thing out of the show in terms of games. I really hope they hit their target render.

More importantly, I really hope Capcom continues to support the PC.

Because... fucking Christ, imagine this game in the Bullshots thread.

Sounds Delicious

There were parts in the trailer where you can clearly tell the diff between the gameplay graphics, versus the cutscene graphics that don't involve just the scrolling item HUD... they were both most likely rendered still in-game with the engine, but there is a subtle loss in fidelity when you were having to actually run around and interact with shit versus having a lovely CG movie in yer face.

The sci-fi elements that are hinted at in the trailer will surely come into play. I doubt this is a cut and dry DD sequel, the title probably has deeper meaning too.

Deep down into your subconscious or something. The ending hints at social aspects too, we'll see what it ends up being but I'm VERY excited to see more.

Capcom has been really hit and miss these days but I always get excited when I see this kind of stuff from them!

Capcpom is about to own next-gen engines just like they did this gen. A DMC 5 would look amazing in that.

And this level of graphical fidelity or something very similar is absolutely possible on the PS4 as like someone has said - the environments look very closed-boxed compared to nearly everything else out there.

Of course, this was just a glimpse and we have no idea what scale is presented throughout the majority of the game.

But I just have this fantasy of a game like this...you are on your own travelling deeper and deeper into dark and claustrophobic caves.

Ya agreed and even with a normal downgrade after adding in normal game bits I would love to check this out.
Strangely I am not as impressed with the big fire bits as I am with the faces and animation of the elf guy when he moves, grabs the torch. Sadly thats in a cutscene but hopefully built on the same programming as the real time would be.

A true next gen game set almost all underground in a fantasy world could rock. Underground cities, huge mushroom forests with the spoor floating around like mist, frozen lakes, lava, true environmental stuff. Like lava physics, water physics and so forth. All kinds of things exist that would look amazing next gen and in a smaller underground environment would allow for some epic effects.

The thing that gets me about this game is that it reminds me of The Hulk from 2003. The CG on The Hulk made him look like he was made of play-doh or something. So yeah, the graphics look great, but everything looks too soft and almost blurry, like it's made of play-doh.

When I first saw it and they were in the tunnel I was thinking of an Elder Scrolls game with this fidelty.
I got a bit too excited for my own good lol

This is awesome. I was a bit saddened to be brought back to earth after the conference and what other devs said about it. But still even close to that...WOW.
What did they say about it? They confirmed it was a cutscene / engine demo, is that what you mean?

I think people are so used to current generation dung they're unable to comprehend games actually looking like this. Yes people, technology has advanced rapidly in the past 8 years. I expect a lot of games to look this good in a couple years.
