Capcom's Deep Down 1080p HQ directfeed - welcome to nextgen

Is there a good video of the blur from PS2? I keep hearing people mentioning it but haven't seen anything that demonstrates it well.

I can't wait to see what the final motion blur in KZSF looks like.
P2's motion blur is probably the only reason why people don't constantly complain about the performance issues.

That was a real time tech demo... but it was not a game yet. Proof of concept real time render is more accurate I think. 100% scripted use of the engine. Also, more then likely just running off a high end PC for now rather then an actual PS4 devkit. Much like the MGS5 stuff released last fall.

People certainly have every right to be skeptical though, after the 2005/6 era of CG tech demos being passed off as real games it's hard to take everything at face value anymore.

Mgs5 wasnt running on a high end pc.... It was running on a pc with specs comparable to ps3

Doesn't Deep Down give you a project offset vibe? Looks much, much more impressive as well. I thought nothing was going to top offset at least for a while.

Love your Avatar... What is with the influx of people who love Perfect Dark lately? I don't mind, though, the more the merrier!

Also, I only remember seeing stills of this and thinking it was going to be the new Elder Scrolls, and never actually saw that it wasn't so thank you for making me fall in love with a dead woman...

There's a good bit of aliasing in that vid, mostly with transparencies or depth of field effects. How would it be CGI?

I've got so much do want for this game.

Capcom's MT framework engine was very impressive this gen, I see no reason to think that they can't pull off something like this.

I still have hope that rare is not totally dead, even though pdz was below average.

Πάντα (Panta) actually means "always" in Greek.

Damn so it does have a connection to "Pants", even though in an incredibly marginal way.

Pantaloons (etymology):
1660s, "kind of tights" (originally a French fashion and execrated as such by late 17c. English writers), associated with Pantaloun (1580s), silly old man character in Italian comedy who wore tight trousers over his skinny legs, from Italian Pantalone, originally San Pantaleone, Christian martyr, a popular saint in Venice (Pantaleone in the comedies represents the Venetian). The name is of Greek origin and means "all-compassionate" (or, according to Klein, "entirely lion"). Applied to tight long trousers (replacing knee-breeches) by 1798; pants is a shortened form first recorded 1840.

Pantos --> Pantaleone --> Saint Pantalone --> Pantalone --> Pantaloun --> Pantaloons --> Pants.

My Wii U says it can not play this video. What gives?

Also, more then likely just running off a high end PC for now rather then an actual PS4 devkit.
More than likely not. If this was demoed on the high end PC (meaning 680 SLI or something like that) they would very likely be able to pull off even better image quality. This here was 1080p with post-proc AA and halved framebuffer for overdraw effects.

What is with the whole helicopter SFX in the background towards the end of the video. Is this like an Assassin's Creed game where you play in the future and past?

I'm pretty sure I read somewhere that a PS4 could potentially run a game that looked this good if it was confined to small spaces. Games may approach this quality but I'm skeptical that we will get there this generation.

I don't think there's any debate over this anymore but I'll just state that it seems definitely to be real time. The two things that impressed me were first and foremost the animations and then the fire modelisation.

The thing is, I'm pretty sure this is much more of a proof of concept that anything else. I'd be all over gameplay that would look and play just like this, but I am far, far from convinced this will happen. Also, the game seems to be still in early development. I hope they do not rush this just so it is available for launch.

Still, this was the only appealing thing to me during the PS4 unveiling conference software wise. I hope it turns out good.

I swear, the ridiculous reactions to this demo are so amusing. From "CGI!!!!" to "well . . . ummmm . . . not gameplay anyway . . . yeah, that's it!!!" to "actually doesn't look that good to begin with" are immensely amusing.

In any event the Panta Rhei engine looks good so far from this, so can't wait to see what they do with it
hopefully something more interesting than Resident Evil
.

Anyway, the name of the engine makes me think of nothing but this:

Wanna Panta, dontcha wanna, wanna Panta

They're trying to pull off PS4 quality though.

Its really funny because Ono said on the stage that Deep Down clip was actually running on PS4 but people didn't seem to care.

Get ready for Capcom's Assassin's Creed! Bet those other shots of that modern city that show off the engine are really from this. Deep Down in the mind etc.

Not always. GamersHell is a better place for the original, publisher provided versions.

If it's a mp4 file originally, we do not reencode the video at all since a few weeks now. It's becoming a slight issue since some codecs don't actually work at all on the PS3, so I'm thinking about having both the original and a reencoded version with more standard codecs in the future.

Between this and Agni's Philosophy, JRPGs had a pretty decent showing already on the tech front. Can't wait!

Looks insane. Dragon's Dogma was amazing, and I'm sure this is going to blow that away.

Imo, jRPG with such quality will be so rare in the future. Just look at Square output on PS3.

I don't doubt that this runs on PS4 but I think this is more of a tech demo thing and people are setting themselves up for disappointment if they expect this to be what the final game will look like.

Looks really great, but its not "OMGWTFSUPERDUPERHYPEDNEXTGENGRAFFIX!!!" It looks better than the best games out there but not that much
I think "OMGWTFSUPERDUPERHYPEDNEXTGENGRAFFIX!!!" describes it pretty well. The image quality is a bit iffy at points, and the environment still a bit polygonal, but other than that the asset detail and effect quality are extremely impressive.

This is also true. It could be a deliberately chosen low IQ offline rendering, but that just seems exceedingly unlikely.

PS3 has been rough for them. But at the same time, look at how fast they can edit features in Agni's Philosophy on Luminous. The closer they get to being able to utilize their Visual Works studios assets, the farther ahead they'll be since not everyone has that kind of resource like they do, and now they can use that in their actual gameplay engines.

I think the Cell architecture crippled them, and Crystal Tools. I think their output next gen will actually go up, and they'll make games faster. Not to mention they've had a bit of internal management restructuring, purchased Eidos and integrated some of their tech into theirs, and PS4 is far more developer friendly. Even without all that, they started outsourcing some bits and got XIII-2 and LR done in less than 2 years each. They also rebuilt XIV from scratch in 2 years and it looks great on PC (and that's about what we can expect on PS4).

I think there's some reason to be optimistic about the future. Even Konami seems to have their next gen engine lined up and ready to go, with MGS and Zone of the Enders in the pipleline (not JRPGs, I know). JRPGs at this level will be relatively rare though. Pretty much just SQEX and Capcom can do it. From Software will probably put out some gorgeous stuff on Unreal 4 after a while, but the production values won't be at this level in my opinion. Still pretty damn great though I'm sure. Atlus can't do it. Namco's Tales of games can't do it.

I'm still doubtful. Also because we will have just Square Enix that might afford to develop such a high-quality grahpics. Can you see Atlus, Level-5, Konami, Sega develop something in line with Agni's Philosophy in the near future, given how shrinking the genre is outside Japan?

Atlus, never. Konami, no, but they could if they wanted to (they don't). Level-5, they'll probably put out something neat but it won't be at this level.

Sega I think will probably put out at least one fantastic JRPG. Skies of Arcadia last gen, Phantasy Star Universe and Valkyria Chronicles this gen. That team will probably make another new IP. They have great custom engines too. CANVAS in Valkyria Chronicles still blows me away. Binary Domain and Yakuza look amazing too.

But yeah, I pretty much said it's just SQEX and Capcom (and From Software, and 1 game from Sega, and maybe 1 from Level 5). Tri-Ace also has a next gen engine I think but we haven't seen it for a few years. They'll put out something neat, but not at Agni's/Deep Down's level.

[EDIT] And Monolift Soft on the Wii-U. Definitely not next gen, but still good. Mistwalker? Who even knows ....

The misinformed comments in this thread actually made it physically painful to read. People making statements without any supporting facts are killing these forums.

Yeah, all we have to go on at this stage is:

A. It was an in engine demonstration of their new engine and the tech powering their new IP.
B. He said it was running off PS4.

Not confirmed but exceedingly likely

C. It in now way showed any gameplay, HUD was overlain for demonstration purposes. It was just a highly intense cutscene with inengine assets and a highly cinematic direction.

Very impressive looking, did its job.

Kill it with fire.

CG is still terrible I see.

As for Deep Down, from the stream, it looked kind of bullshit to me. The random HUD didn't help. There was only the bit when he's running that looked like a game, but seeing the direct feed, I think it looks totally possible. It's a tiny little cave. Reminds me that the MGS3 level in the small cave was probably the most impressive thing on PS2.

One thing I think is interesting about this video, and the Final Fantasy girl video, Epic feel like they're being completely outclassed to me. The UE4 trailer looked pretty crap compared to other things at the show. I think SE and Capcom did better work than Epic this generation too, so you could say it's not surprising at all, but I did expect more from them.

I actually think Knack is still the most impressive thing they showed, if it's all real-time, which I still doubt.

Epic is selling tech, not art. I don't think the actual techniques used are all that different.
