Mark 8 was introduced in the Battle of New York at the end of Avengers. But then by Iron Man 3, he'd built all those crazy variants that are on display in the film, and the primary gold Iron Man armor in that film was the Mark 42. Then the Mark 43 was introduced in AoU at the beginning, 44 is Hulkbuster, and Mark 45 was the suit Iron Man wore at the end.

Surprised Marvel didn't tell the Russos the Iron Man game plan.

"So, Tony usually has what he had in the previous movie for maybe 5 minutes. Then it gets destroyed, so he builds a new one. And another one. And a backup. And a backup of that backup...

Let me check with the merchandising department...

It's been like that since I believe The Avengers. The world got it early, we Americans got it last, but in return we saw them eat Shawarma on the big screen while the rest of the world saw it on a blurry YT clip. They continued it ever since.

Can't wait to see the second after credits surprise.
 
After spending the following days just letting Civil War soak in my head, I'm left in disbelief with a strange feeling of emptiness. And no, it's not because Civil War was bad. Quite the opposite, I'm left with this feeling of emptiness because I'm not sure how Marvel can top themselves after this. The Russos (or more specially, Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely, the Captain America trilogy writers) pretty much covered every base masterfully. In terms of what I mean.
  • The New Avengers all have a role to play in this film. None of them are quick cameos put in just for set pieces. This more than applies to Black Panther &, to an extent, Spider-Man.
  • Speaking of Spider-Man
    (surprisingly-hot Aunt May aside, which Tony even points out)
    , he's pretty much the Spidey we know & love. The way he acts, fights, & quips is like something out of Spectacular Spider-Man. And seeing him geek out about the Avengers as he's kicking their asses is a sight to behold.
    There was one particular song that Peter was listening to that I really want to get, but I don't know the name of the song. It'd be interesting if they go the Star-Lord approach (to one extent) with Peter's music in his solo films.
    I should also note that the rumor about Spider-Man's prototype suit having a hoodie & goggles was real. I couldn't get a good look at the goggles themselves, but they looked pretty similar to the camera lens-esque goggles that the Russos apparently put up on Twitter. I'll have to watch it again to be sure.
    He's about as much in the film as Wonder Woman was in Batman v Superman. Long enough to have a lasting impact on the film (about 30 minutes), but not long enough to be as integral as, say, Black Panther. One reviewer put it best, in that Spider-Man was the best & most expendable part of the film.
  • Black Panther.....holy mother of god. He's straight-up comic-accurate. He carries himself like royalty, he gives fucks to nobody, cuts straight to the point with no bullshit attached, & he's a straight-up badass.
    And don't worry, Wakanda was done justice, as well.
    Not much more needs to be said about Black Panther. Get hype for his solo film (which, thanks to Ryan Coogler being attached, who apparently helped with some of T'Challa's dialogue in Civil War, has me even more hyped
  • Baron Zemo was MUCH better than I expected him to be, & played a bigger role in the film's plot than I anticipated. While granted, he wasn't exactly the comic book version in terms of design (far from it), one critic was pretty close to the mark when he said that MCU Zemo was similar to Ed Brubaker's Zemo.
    And worry not, Baron Zemo is not a one-&-done villain. Black Panther made sure of that.
  • Without delving into too much, the airport scene certainly lives up to the hype. The Russo Secret Sauce is real. I don't even think I should put stuff in spoiler tags for this, you just have to see it for yourself.
  • The final act was easily the best of the MCU up to this point, & it's not just because of the fact that it isn't a huge explosion-based finale. Let me just give a tiny little hint (which I'll put in spoiler tags just in case, even though I'm not outright revealing anything),
    something that was revealed in Winter Soldier comes back to bite Cap in the ass.
  • There quite a lot of humor in this film, & not just from Spider-Man. But the great thing is that none of them take away from the tone of the film & in some ways helps build the characters more.
  • This movie does a MUCH better job justifying Tony's point of view concerning the Registration Act/Sokovia Accords than in the comics (which ended up villainizing Tony). You can understand where Tony's coming from &, in a way, I did have second thoughts about my stance with #TeamCap.
Long story short, Captain America: Civil War does a much better adaptation of the Civil War story arc than even the comics did. It was respectful to the source material while not being afraid to blaze its own trail (which benefitted the film in the long-run). It's quite literally the best film of the MCU, & I'm not sure how the Russos can top themselves with Infinity War.

I dont know if this is considered spoiler territory. I'll tag it just in case. I've heard in the comics Civil War Tony has the
"Bleeding Edge" armor. Is that armor in this movie?
 
I don't believe Bleeding Edge will ever make it to the MCU. The concept of armor that just oozes out of Tony's skin may be a bridge too far.

He's apparently gonna have a more involved role than usual, hence Jon talking about "coming back". How he's gonna balance that alongside his Jungle Book sequel I have no idea.

Man, some of those designs look really interesting. I wish we could've gotten to see fully what XXIV and XL could do at their full potential.

I thought Iron Man 3 was a missed opportunity in that the suits that symbolized Tony's growing paranoia against any given circumstance didn't really seem too differentiated in terms of purpose. Maybe one suit had longer appendages so they smacked away some Extremis goons, or the Hulkbuster-esque one was useful for lifting, but all in all, they seemed quite limited in capability. Worse, in their showcase demonstration, they were kind of easily torn apart by the enemy. While it was a built-up, 'epic' moment with them all appearing in the third act, damn I wish he slipped into one of those black/gold suits for most of the film, it looks awesome.

Think Tony will go about this tinkering craze again when Thanos comes calling in Infinity War? Seeing these suits fend off his minions would be amazing and a nice callback.

As someone who hangs out in steam, I need a new pc and monthly pick up threads, that amount seems like a chump change for them.

I have buyers remorse all the way until I receive the figure. Then I don't give a shit anymore. It's a sunk cost and I have a badass figure on my shelf.

I LOVE how Starlord and Winter Soldier's Cap Hot Toys look on my shelf. Ditto with my Naked Snake Hot Toys. Besides, I don't have many Hot Toys. Most of my stuff are cheap Figmas and Nendoroids.

Yeah. But there's nothing better than Hot Toys.

Glad I got my Iron Man mk7 for $250 back when Avengers 1 came out.

They're typically not that much. This one happens to be $350 due to it being "Diecast" so they just jack the price up. They're usually around $220. Still expensive but they make for an awesome display.

If we're just talking heroes, I suppose that isn't a terrible listing, though each of those actors have been strong and weak in different roles.

I've pretty much held to this since Age of Ultron. Cap's "maybe cause you just haven't seen it yet" line when responding to Tony about not having a dark side is incredibly telling and one of the more unappreciated lines in that movie, if only because of what it symbolizes (alongside Steve barely being able to budge Thor's hammer which was a superb way of subtle character development by a visual comedy gag).

Chris Evans is a fantastic actor, especially considering he's gone on record saying that his role as the Human Torch in the original F4 was closer to his actual personality outside of the movies. He manages to not just embody the ideal role of what Captain America represents but simultaneously he's managed to uphold this sort of veneer of denial about his depths as a person.

If Civil War manages to actually knock Captain America down a peg it'd be somewhat interesting. Both of The First Avenger and The Winter Soldier managed to place Cap square in a situation where the lack of character building is set more onto a stage where Steve can be a subtle idealization of good-hearted morality and values among a world that's lost and in disarray. In Civil War the subtle signs of imperfections that were mostly placed in Age of Ultron seem like they might just rear their head a little more. Even though Cap has good reason not to trust the government after what happened in the world of the Avengers and even if there's no denying that he's a good person at heart, is he not in full realization of what he comes to embody by supporting a side of full autonomy? I realize what pushes him over the edge is a personal investment fueled by empathy, but the catalyst of that is of a tragically dubious position which makes his plight even more questionable. Really, Steve is put into an awkward situation no matter which way you slice it - even if all of that comes from a place of having to look for his own self worth.

Shit. I can't believe we're getting a summer blockbuster that might actually make audiences think. It seems like the first legitimate iconography vs reality question posed by a movie of this ilk (though I suppose you could make the case that The Dark Knight tackled this theme too but from a completely different perspective).
