Captain America: Civil War Review Thread

I will discount reviews that mention BvS in anyway. No need for that. Cheap criticism. Review film for what it is not give it points for what other's didn't do what you wanted.

the movies are quite comparable, doesn't really seem like cheap criticism to me

both movies deal with the collateral damage of superheroes and the threats they face as well as pitting hero against hero. you may as well just discount every single review.

People think that praising Marvel movies while criticizing DC movies is a fanboy/preference thing, when in actuality it is that one succeeds in what it is trying to accomplish while the other fails. The brand and imagined favoritism has little to do with it.

People always make this out to be a bigger deal than it actually was, like there was some sort of meltdown involved
Spending a year gathering quotes to serve crow over a movie you have nothing to do with, aside from your own excessive attachment as a fan, is incredibly pathetic with or without a meltdown being involved. The idea of serving crow is an idiotic concept in itself.

Yeah it isn't needed at all. It's pretty clear they're two different movies from looking at the reviews.

The BvS RT thread (not even the review thread, but the RT one) was the worst, most mean spirited, petty, childish and condescending echo chamber I've ever seen on GAF, and I've been here for years. This thread won't get close, for people enjoy more misery than happiness. Which is a shame. This deserves a collective celebration.

Yes, and in fact we should never compare anything ever.

I read it is as unconscious bias. If you go in looking to compare flaws of another movie you precive as being lesser you can always find things to make the other film look great in comparison. Anyone some comparisons can have double edged sword to them. For instance why do some deride BvS for having too many characters and shoe horning set ups for future films when Civil War has twice the number of heroes on screen with less time.

I'm not saying no to comparisons. Just no to obvious attempts to cash in on the hate bandwagon for one particular film. Compare it with age of ultron or Thor 2 while your at it. Why cherry pick the Lowest DC rated film to pile on.

Nah, you just acted as if people were making fun of your child, lashed out, and got banned over it. The only way you could say anything was mean-spirited is if you take a company you're not involved with as seriously as possible.

Going in blind, I can dig that.

this got me

in a word? execution

Is he being willfully obtuse or just ignorant? Any guesses?

Maybe you can apply context? Marvel has earned this because they've done, what, a dozen or so MCU movies so far? They've built up these characters. Whereas DC tried to do this in their second movie.

I'm guessing because the introduction to the other characters in this movie doesn't come by way of an email and a hard break in the story so that we can watch someone watch teaser trailers.

All about execution.

Perhaps it's because, according to reviews, the characters have arcs that have been built by the many movies before this and mesh together well, rather than being cameos shoehorned in

That has nothing to do with BvS's failings

Well people were literally telling me to shut up. I mean, whatever, hope such a thing never happens again.

By many accounts, it's because Civil War just does a better job of it.

Spider-Man 3 has three villains. The Dark Knight has multiple villains. Praising the latter for juggling them so well, and criticizing the former for fumbling them, is not hypocrisy or bias.

So who else liked Cap 1 more than 2? Just rewatched both recently to reaffirm this.

No! Captain America 1 thread!

I liked WS more but I definitely like Cap 1 a lot more than I often see it discussed. I watch it as a '30s-40s pulp adventure which I'm always a sucker for though.

Nah, I mean I honestly love the first Captain movie, it gives me such a Rocketeer vibe that I can't help but love it, but Winter Soldier is one of (if not THE) best of the Marvel movies IMHO.

Well, for another three weeks at least.....:D

Again, I'll write the same thing I did before.

People think that praising Marvel movies while criticizing DC movies is a fanboy/preference thing, when in actuality it is that one succeeds in what it is trying to accomplish while the other fails.

Critics think that this movie handles its characters well, gives them good motivations and fulfilling arcs. That would be true even if it wasn't comparing this movie to any other movie. It succeeds in doing what it sets out to do, and thus receives positive response.

You are of course, allowed to like different things or disagree. These are just opinions after all.

EDIT: Own point echoed by so many others. Wouldnt have continued if I wasn't quoted, ha.

me too, why do people hate CA1? Red Skull was a meh villain with zero chemistry with Cap, but whatever, the movie had lots of charm.
