Captain America: Civil War Review Thread

Pretty sure I read an interview with the director stating the Falcon scene was their idea and the studio loved it.

The Falcon scene was Rudd and McKay's idea, because they liked Winter Soldier.

And the evil corporate rival villain idea was actually Wright's, who took inspiration from Iron Man.

These are the same people who came up with the idiotic "not muh Superman" meme to disparage any criticism of MoS that unfavorably compared it to other takes on the character, something that literally every adaptation of an existing work or IP gets its share of. Best to ignore them.
Nah, the people who would be upset their favorite comic book movies are seen as failures, are most likely the same ones upset about the characters treatment in those films.
No need to bring that in here though.

Tear away the powers, abilities and egos, though, and the third Captain America movie is at its core a deep exploration of friendship and family and what sacrifices should be made to hold onto both. And while it’s not the greatest Marvel effort — that honor goes to the previous Captain America: The Winter Soldier — Civil War does pull outstanding performances from its two franchise faces, Chris Evans and Robert Downey

I always have a dramatic pause before opening these review threads for the first time. Am I going to be hit in the face with rose petals or a shit ball?

Today it smells nice.

I liked Ant-Man a lot and I really liked that they credited Edgar Wright for the film.

However the villain was terrible for me; bottom tier Marvel villain in my opinion. It's conjecture to say this - but can't help but feel Edgar Wright's vision could have elevated the movie top tier Marvel.

Edit - As someone mentioned the Falcon cameo was wank. Felt like something shoehorned into the film; not the worst offender but it wasn't great.

Personally I think Cross was probably like... a mid-tier Marvel villain if I'd have to rate him (though that's not saying much). Even though he was another evil business guy he was far more engaging than any of the previous ones we've had - mostly because him, along with Hope and even Scott all circulate back to Hank Pym being the core foundation of the plot's emotional stakes. With Cross you're dealing with someone who was rendered an outcast and just wanted to impress Pym, while the actor who plays Cross managed to depict him in a way that made him seem partially mentally unhinged but also unpredictable and kind of pitiable. Unlike all previous evil exec dudes he wasn't just looking to line his pockets. He definitely isn't amazing but as someone who's going into most of of the MCU movies these days expecting mediocre villains he definitely surprised me.

Yeah let's ignore that these movies are parts of franchises and direct sequels to other movies, referencing the plot threads of those explicitly.

I don't even know why I'm engaging you but the salt it's generating is worth it I guess :D

Whatever it all cool, I not salty and don't want to derail thread. I love both marvel and DC equally. Read almost all comics and will watch all superhero films. I'm also a huge film fan and when it comes to film criticism as you can see I have very polarising opinions on how it should be done. Obviously others don't agree but that's just my opinion as is theirs.

Can we compromise by just posting Timblr gifs?

Oh shit, can we not. We can do anything else besides that.

Second best idea you've had.

The Falcon scene was a Rudd and McKay idea; I didn't really like it.

My favorite aspects of the film, after research, looked to have stemmed from Wright's ideas - the heist idea (which felt under cooked in the movie) and the fantastic setting of the final fight.

It wasn't a movie I watched in the Cinema due to the marvel fatigue which set in with AoU, for me personally. I read somewhere that Wright's script was less, for lack of a better word, formulaic - I believe the McKay script was described as more 'American'. It may just be the biased Brit in me but I'd have loved to have seen Wright's vision for the movie come to fruition - partly for the amount of work he put into it.

Not enough Black Panther impressions.
"Captain America: Civil War features what is unquestionably the largest ensemble we’ve seen yet in a Marvel Studios movie, and while the narrative isn’t quite as strong as Captain America: The Winter Soldier, where the film makes up for it is in its tremendous character work – both in its understanding of who these pop culture figures are at their core, and having them play off of each other. There’s no better example of the former in the film than Chadwick Boseman as the newly introduced T’challa a.k.a. Black Panther, who is every bit as regal, intelligent, bold and passionate as the hero is on the page."

"Far more integral to the plot is fellow MCU newcomer Black Panther (ably played by Chadwick Boseman), who is as much a regal badass as Thor. Panther's fight scenes are very cool, his costume looks great, and his emotional arc essentially satisfies the need for an origin story in his own upcoming movie. As with Spidey, you're left wanting more of this character and it's regrettable that the inclusion of the web-slinger has stolen much of the buzz that should've accompanied Panther's film debut."

Yes, we need more.

So the general consensus seems to be that it's not as good as Winter Soldier, but better than every other Marvel movie? Not bad at all. Hopefully I feel the same as these critics when I see the film for myself.

Looking forward to seeing the two new heroes on screen, so far it seems they nailed both Spidey and Black Panther. Spidey was my favourite as a kid and Black Panther looks like a total badass.

There's a few I've seen that prefer WS, but I'd say so far this is getting the nod for the best movie Marvel have put out yet by most.

What? I saw one review that said this. Did I miss others? Or does one review now make a consensus?

It seems there's a sizable contingent that thinks this is as good as Marvel's ever been.

I can imagine a scenario where both are true for me. Simply by being consistently great all the way through, yet never reaching the heights of those first 2/3rds of Winter Soldier.

Most reviews are saying that it's the MCU's best movie yet. It's better than Winter Soldier.
