Captain America: Civil War Review Thread

I just saw a movie critic roll by in his brand new Lexus. He was eating steak and lobster while talking on his Marvel phone.

True story.
 
Thor 2 gets too much hate but I don't think it's a good movie. It's not a bad movie either, but it's very...competent. There are more than a handful of good scenes but nothing that leaves a major impression. And as much as I love the Star Wars feel of the attack on Asgard, the movie felt too sci fi and not enough epic fantasy.

Still, there are much worse ways to spend an evening. I don't regret seeing it in theaters and I've rewatched it a handful of times.

Malekith's assault on the castle and Frigga's funeral are good scenes.

The movie isn't horrible, but it's not in my top MCU films.

I'll still watch it once in a while though.
 
Just listened to the Collider crew give their brief, pre-embargo thoughts on the film. Campea and Schnepp, like me, rank Avengers 1 as their #1 MCU film, and think this film rivals it in quality. Which is nuts. My hype is way too high right now.

I'm going to go fucking HAM tomorrow as soon as I get back from the screening. Look forward to a 2000+ word write up, one spoiler free and one with spoilers.

For now, I'm going to give my final ranking of the MCU films as I go into tomorrow. If your list looks dramatically different from mine... you probably shouldn't take my review seriously! We have different tastes ;)

GOD TIER:

Avengers
for what it's worth, the only other comic book movies I place into this elite tier are Spider-Man 2 and Dark Knight

Great Tier:

Winter Soldier
Iron Man 1
Guardians of the Galaxy

Good Tier:

Iron Man 3
Cap 1
Ant-Man

Average Tier:

Thor
Thor 2
Iron Man 2
Age of Ultron

Bad Tier:

Hulk

From what I can gather just reading GAF:

-I like Avengers 1 more than most (many rank TWS and GOTG above it)
-I like Thor 2 and Iron Man 2 more than most (many call them absolute shit, I still enjoy watching both)
-I like Age of Ultron less than most (mostly had to do with huge expectations going in, I think. It super under-delivered.)

I go into Civil War with the highest expectations for a MCU film since Avengers. The Cap series and the Russo Bros are coming off the incredible Winter Soldier, and in January of 2015, my ultimate dream scenario became a reality: Spider-Man, my favorite comic book character, joined the MCU. He makes his debut in this film. To say I have high expectations and ridiculous excitement is an understatement. In fact, I'm having trouble sleeping right now!

Will Civil War meet or exceed expectations like these early reviews and impressions would imply? I'll find out tomorrow. Remember GAF, you can trust me and no one else.
 
Question. Is there every been a more consistent movie studio then Marvel? From the amount of movies they put out a year, regardless of how you feel about their movies most are like 70 and up it's crazy.
 
Nothing but excellency. There was a brief period where I was definitely feeling fatigued on all of the superhero movies, but the undeniably high quality of Marvel's work makes it exciting again to watch a hero flick. Fantastic reviews.

Back in early Singer X-Men days, I was only happy they exist.

In the past, I would say Pixar has been for a decade or so at a higher level. Disney animation themselves have been getting consistently good lately and under the same kind of management I would guess Lucasfilm would be similar. Across the board, thinking about how Disney is pushing out a combo of Zootopolis, The Jungle Book and Civil War within a couple of months, two of which people thought might fail and get 90+ RT scores is a pretty good sign of the success of their current approach.

Sure, but Loki being the best thing about the movie this many times in a row becomes less praise-worthy, and instead makes you go "Man, they're really doing fuck all with Thor..." I mean outside of that ending stinger, there's really nothing else of note that happens in that movie.

I generally like the MCU and am hyped for this but love for the Avengers bemuses me. It felt lazy and cheap for what it was, both stylistically and narratively. AoU felt like it had more of the style, but was very much lumped with the same problems. I'm really hyped if CW can, as is implied, do a better job of getting the 'feel' of an Avengers film right in terms of balance.

But then again I include the polarising Iron Man 3 in my top tier MCU films, alongside Winter Soldier, GOTG and Iron Man 1 so my view isnt probably widely shared.

I would put AoU on the great category and Ant-man on the average. Haven't seen the Hulk yet. Agree on all the rest.

The best ones are the ones who claim Rotten Tomatoes itself is biased towards Marvel-movies, while owned by Warner Bros......

how about we play this game the other way: guess how many reviews will there be, before it drops below 100%
 
How am I gonna hold for two weeks for this?!
Letting reviews out so early is a great show of confidence but now we have to resist spoilers for two weeks and well, wait.
