Fanboy? That's a pretty harsh label...I mean, these are probably just people who got preview tickets and the movie didn't click with them...

nothing 'fanboy' about any of that...

The Batman shirt really gives the reviewer a sense of impartiality.

AoU would be better than Avengers if all the action wasn't such a mess. A pretty big problem for what is primarily an action movie. So many great scenes punctuated by poorly edited fighting and weightless looking CG. Horrible piss filter doesn't help the look of the movie either.

i can't even fathom how someone could rank aou over avengers

Avengers 1 is definitely better but I'd rank them pretty closely.

AoU could have been SOOOOO much better if someone could have told Whedon is fuck off with making Ultron into a quiping machine.

Alright, so I asked this a few pages back and didn't get a response to it so i'll ask again: How is Frank Grillo as Crossbones?

I agree slightly because there's less setup in getting the team together-and more just seeing them interact in their "status quo" mode.

I have to go with AoU too. It tries to say something (muddles it, but it tries) meaningful, and Ultron comes across as more dangerous than Loki. That and the Hawkeye farm scene, while out of place and plot-stalling, is some really good shit for a blockbuster.

Allow me! I have seen both in the past two days, so all of it is very fresh in my head.

For the record: first time seeing in theaters, Avengers>>>AoU. But on rewatch it's the opposite.

  • The opening scene, up to the title "Avengers" is so boring that every time I want to watch that movie and I remember this part it gives me pause. I don't know what it is about that car chase but it is boring as all hell.
  • The recruitment phase (especially Hulk) just isn't any fun to watch anymore.
  • Why is Thor a complete idiot when we are first introduced to him? He acts like a complete fool. Culminating in him trying to murder Captain America when he attempts to make Thor their ally.
  • Thor overall in this movie is pretty damn bad.
  • Thor v Iron Man and Thor v Hulk just aren't nearly as exciting as the first time.
  • The entire Hellicarrier part is pretty lame with a few good quips thrown in.
  • Captain Americas suit.
  • They still didn't know that Captain America could be cool, so they have him in an insanely lame gunfight and still make it so he can't hit anyone.
  • The New York fight is fun but the battle droid way they all go down at the end is lame.

Ultron on the other hand, has gotten better the more I watch.

Really one of the things I like most about Ultron, is one of the main complaints people had when they saw it. It feels like it's part of a bigger story. I don't mean a 5 minute bath to set up Ragnarok. I mean that this really feels like a comic book universe in a movie, rather than the normal world with some heroes thrown in. I can't really describe it, but it's the feeling I get when I watch the movie. The MCU has finally gotten to the point where there is enough to make it feel like a full on comic book movie.

Other good things:

  • I know people love Loki but Ultron>>>>> imo
  • Vision is amazing.
  • I like the way the team fights together.
  • I love Cap vs Ultron in Hong Kong(?)
  • I love the scene where they are all in Tony's house just chumming it up.
  • Scarlet Witch is pretty cool.
  • Cap has a good suit, and is FAR more badass than the last Avengers.
  • I don't care what you say, Hulkbuster v Hulk is awesome
  • This armor:
  • latest

Now obviously Ultron isn't that good (Widow/Banner is awful) and Avengers isn't that bad. I rate them fairly closely. And as I said Avengers was much better the first time around. But if you asked me which one i'd rather watch right now, it's not really that close. I've watched Ultron 4 times since I bought it a couple months ago. I find it an extremely rewatchable and enjoyable movie. Avengers just hasn't aged as well. Even though it was exactly what it needed to be at the time it came out.

Damn straight. I own this shirt:

Veronica vs Hulk is one of the highlights in the MCU catalog no matter how you feel about Age of Ultron.

I too am in the AoU > Avengers camp. Granted its been a while since I've seen Avengers but ever since I saw AoU I thought it had alot more good moments done alot better. Plus it didnt job Cap nearly as much as in Avengers. The only thing that gets a bit annoying are the constant quips but I can live with it.

Yes that ironman suit looked amazing with its more humanoid design. Too bad we saw so little of it; they never even showed the upgrade.

AoU's depiction of Nat (plus the Nat + Bruce relationship) greatly reduced my enjoyment of AoU, especially after Winter Soldier, which gave her some solid depth and agency.

I didn't mind Natasha's love stuff but it felt like I had missed a movie where that was setup because in AoU it cames out of nowhere.

Yep. I liked how we got some of Natasha's origin story in AoU and how she felt that Banner was a kindred spirit, clinging onto someone who might accept her ugly "monster" side. The idea was sweet. However, it came between a pair who had shown zero chemistry before AoU and, truth be told, little chemistry within the movie.

Black Widow is one of the more compelling characters to me but I don't think they'll show much more of her.

While rewatching some MCU films in prep for CW I do found myself enjoying AoU significantly more than my first two times (which were in cinema). I already thought it was good, but some of it's problems are less glaring to me in hindsight. Avengers 1 is best out of the two though, for me.

I liked that Iron man suit design, but the CG was pretty bad on it a lot of the time

I think that the quality of the cgi effects in general took a nosedive after The Avengers. With the exception of a few scenes that were well done, like the Hulkbuster fight, the rest of the cgi work was rather bad for such an expensive production.

Action is better in Avengers. Performances and writing and cinematography and pacing are all better in AoU.

I would like to dispute that. In The Avengers every member of the team had a unique personality. In AoU Whedon turned everybody into Tony Stark. I love that Marvel movies are more fun and light-hearted but Whedon clearly went overboard. The tone went from fun to ridiculous.

What?? Can you explain what you mean here, because as someone who's watched it a couple times I have no clue what you're talking about.

Yeah, no.

Yup that's how it's been with me. I love AoU the more I rewatch it and the reverse watching The Avengers.

I'm hoping CW is the best one.

Veronica vs. Hulk fight is fucking amazing.

I agree absolutely with Vault Dweller's post, it really feels like a comic book movie universe as opposed to other movies.

But that was never a Tony Stark exclusive. Think you might be overstating that. And it feels like some folks are suddenly uber sensitive to quips period now. If it was only Tony it'd still be a giant issue..not sure when that became a thing.

Maybe, but I saw The Avengers very recently and I found the balance between serious and humorous dialogue much better in that film.

I don't really remember Avengers that well, but AoU was pretty damn bad. Zero involvement with the characters on that one.

More or less. I recall really enjoying the hell out of the party scene though. Not a good series of movies so far. I trust the russo guys will put out something better though.

Quipphobia is definitely fandom's saddest development.

There is a War on Fun.

Cap's treatment in Avengers is fucking criminal. It's clear Whedon both doesn't like him and doesn't know what to do with him.

The only thing I could believe about those rants is the score being shit. Ant-man was the only marvel movie with a solid score, the others have very generic themes.
