Captain America: Civil War Review Thread

Question: Are the Russo bros big Marvel fans? I ask because they might be the dream directors for these Marvel films. They hit two home runs so far with Winter Soldier and Civil War, and barring some bullshit, Infinity Wars should be great too.

I look at the other three directors that I consider god tier superhero movie directors:

Nolan: Passionate, extremely talented, but was absolutely done after three and no one can convince him otherwise.

Raimi: Passionate, extremely talented, grew up with and has a love for the source material but the studio fucked him on the third one and he was gone at that point.

Whedon: Very talented, has a closer connection to the source material than any of the above... but got super burnout after the first Avengers, the second one felt that burnout, and now he's done until the foreseeable future.

With the Russos, we could be looking at a team that has as much passion and love for the material as the guys above, as much talent as the guys above, and are willing to make as many films as they are asked of, don't seem burned out at all from what I've heard, and Marvel seemingly lets them do their own thing (i.e no Sony/Raimi situation).

Basically, after Civil War, I trust these guys. I trust them hard. I trust them with the keys to the MCU going forward, and as long as they continue to make films with awesome storytelling, humour and some of the best fight choreography in the genre, I hope they do this for a long, long time.
They are the few directors I believe when they say that they read comics and are fans of the heroes.

It was such a disservice to the movie to try and cram in so many things in one. I kinda feel for Snyder having to deal with all that. Should have at least been spread into 2.

The reason he got to make the film is because he convinced DC he could set-up a Justice League with a Batman v Superman movie. Then he made a movie which had a first cut that was 4 hours long.

He brought it on himself.

Whedon needs more hits under his belt... replace his name with Byran Singer and bump Singer to 2nd. Nolan won't be topped until his films are topped.

While I'm not a fan of the whole Marvel vs DC nonsense, it's pretty hilarious how two conceptually similar superhero movies released only a few weeks apart got such different reactions. Some serious whiplash.

I'm trying to be careful with my words about Civil War to avoid spoilers. I'll tag it but it's not exactly a spoiler
Imo the big difference between BvS and Civil War, conceptually, is how the two sides are presented. BvS isn't balanced; Batman is the bad guy. Civil War mostly presents Cap and Tony as valid sides. In a sense, both titles are deceptive.

I've watched a lot of the press stuff for Civil War and they say they've been reading comic books their whole lives, with Spider-Man being their favorite hero.

yesssssssssssssssss

I'd like nothing more than for them to come out of the press events for Infinity War Part 2 saying "We're ready for the next one!"

Making billion dollar blockbusters that are praised by critics and fans alike, starring characters you love, characters the world loves... all while being backed by a studio that allows you a great amount of creative freedom and the ability to put your unique stamp on these mega films. That sounds pretty good to me.

Make Marvel movies forever, Russos.

The Russos are going to jump ship to Star Wars the first chance they get, and be gladly accepted.

Surprised by the reviews, isn't it the highest rated superhero movie ever ?

Well, Winter Soldier was terrible so I'm keeping my expectations low.

Its not the opinion of most people on Gaf, but yeah, i also think Winter Soldier sucked

It really left that feeling of "What´s the point?"

SHIELD defunct?
Hydra outed?
Bucky Barnes regaining his memories?
Cap feeling intense guilt over Bucky, and losing the one thing that kept him tethered to the modern world?

Singer is consistent but overrated, imo. I don't think the X-men series has evolved significantly under his care.

Vaughn is superior, even if DoFP is only marginally better than First Class. He did Kick Ass and Kingsmen, making his overall average better.

Winter Soldier was also the basis for Cap's increasing distrust for the establishment, which serves as his primary rationale for disagreeing with Tony in Civil War.

Pointless, lol.

They can do Star Wars Episode 9

then Avengers 4: World War Hulk

then Star Wars: Obi-Wan

then Avengers 5: Secret Wars

jumping back and forth like that prevents burnout :)

That's not how that works regardless of how many shitty Movie blogs post news without putting an ounce of thought into what they are posting.

Then eventually we will get: Star Wars: Avengers.

;)

In like 2050 or something like that when both series have been rebooted to hell and back.

Do you watch any trailers/footage of these things? If you didn't like Winter Soldier, there is no way in hell you should like this movie. Why would the rotten tomatoes number change that in anyway; especially if it is not so significantly different from the Winter Soldier rating?
Review ratings don't mean shit. If you didn't like a movie, then there is no way you will like a movie that looks exactly like it, has the same writers, same directors, same actors, same studio behind it, starring the same characters doing the same fucking things they did the last time.

This review rating culture thing happening makes me sad. Like what you like. Hate what you want to hate. I'm up here telling people TDK was bad, I don't give a fuck and rotten tomatoes isn't changing that any time soon.

Yeah, but what's the point? /s

Also the tv series Agents of Shield completely changed tone with the Hydra stuff after the movie and the show became good at that point.

This is a damn good trailer with some minor complaints. But man, it nails almost all the great character beats from the movie. It's such a testament to how Marvel nailed Cap as a hero and as a character. The scenes from First Avengers. Damn. Those character scenes are what was sorely missing from Warner and DC's horrendous shitting of Superman. All Man of Steel and Bat v Supes needed were scenes as good as the one with Stanley Tucci. Instead, they made Supes an ashole.

Yeah, watching Winter Soldier a month early totally fucked me because I was all-in on AOS and basically had to stop watching it

I am of the opinion (a very rare opinion apparently) that Iron Man 2, Thor: The Dark World, and Avengers: Age of Ultron are very good movies. I don't really understand a lot of the vitriol these movies receive (and when they released they didn't really get all this negativity) Hindsight and all that I suppose. Regardless, I enjoy them. Captain America: Civil War looks really fantastic and I hope it lives up to the hype. I have not disliked a Marvel Studio's movie yet. Even the lesser movies are really quite good. Here is my ranking and my review scale (I'm going to get eviscerated, oh well. They are opinions and they are mine).

Scale: A+, A, B, C, D, F (that is it, 6 classifications and C is average. A+ is for stuff like The Empire Strikes Back, Heat, The Godfather and Jaws etc.)

#12: The Incredible Hulk (C)
#11: Thor (C)
#10: Iron Man 3 (C)
#9: Captain America: The First Avenger (B)
#8: Ant Man (B)
#7: Iron Man 2 (B)
#6: Thor: The Dark World (B)
#5: Avengers: Age of Ultron (A)
#4: Guardians of the Galaxy (A)
#3: Iron Man (A)
#2: Avengers (A)
#1: Captain America: Winter Soldier (A)

Cuz they don't have clones man and how do YOU know that an anthology movie won't take up a lot of time?
Because doesnt appear so from a observer perspective and I think that its more difficult to create a entirely new chapter of the Star Wars universe then expand on something established
