Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker [Wii U] announced Holiday 2014

I may sound like a broken record at this point, but this was the game I dreamed about Nintendo making after playing 3D World. Just so damn weird that it actually happened.

Well they're also working on a Mario game (in fact it's rather hard to say how many from the 3D World team are actually on this game. It's not necessarily many. There was some talk about EAD Tokyo being capable of making two full-feature games at the same time now.)

I don't think people took issue with you critizing the game. People necessarily didn't like you making assumptions what they wanted or didn't want. Many people myself included really liked those Toad sections in 3D World but I bet you know that much now.

Okay, that's a fair point.

Apologies, it's just that developers dedicating valuable development resources to quirky side projects has never really sat right with me. To this day I still bitch at EAD Tokyo for spending several years working on Jungle Beat instead of a proper Mario game.

Have you even played 3D World?

Yes?

Sorry, the comparison to 3D World is not even remotely apt. However one feels about SM3DW, it was at the very least a brand new main line Mario platformer. Captain Toad's Magical Adventures (or whatever the hell it's called) is...what? Seriously, what is this even supposed to be? Did anybody who played SM3DW think to themselves "Hey, you know what would be awesome? If someone made a full game out of the worst parts of 3DW!". Of course not! Why this game even exists is baffling to me.

Seriously, it's an utter waste of resources. A full on main line Mario platformer was barely able to sell 2 million on Wii-U. This'll be lucky to sell 2 thousand. I'm not too big on the idea of brand new IPs (at least, not compared to some here), but I'd rather have that than this weird, confusing little mini game collection.

The title is literally the title in the OP, why are you complaining for the sake of complaining. Yes plenty of people want this, as you can see by the hundreds of posts, IN THIS SAME THREAD.

This game exists because it's giving fans more of what they want, it exists because it's entertaining, because they're introducing new mechanics, because it's fun. Not everything has to be about how to maximise a companies' profits. Not everything needs to be a system seller.

By your logic, fuck it, anything that isn't Super Mario or a Wii title that'll sell millions is a waste of resources, lets have no variety whatsoever.

I've always appreciated that Nintendo doesn't consider any "tier" of game trash. They'll put the best developers in the world on the oddest little thing and as a result we get all sorts of fascinating gems.

People who consider themselves "real fans" or whatever can be really damned arrogant about what "everyone" does and doesn't want, should and shouldn't care about.

True. I don't think there's any developer on this planet that would give us a similiar project with comparable budget. Something to think about when you whine about "an utter waste of resources". Don't worry: you'll get your Mario games too. Nintendo has never really went light on them.

The new screens look gorgeous. I just can't get over how great it is that this game exists. This game kinda reminds of Galaxy 2, where the team had a lot of unused content, and just made a new game. Same scenario is likely here, where they just had too many Toad levels, but not enough space in 3DW. I love that Nintendo just greenlights stuff like this, and has complete faith in the result. Everything about this Cap'n Toad project is great, especially that we're still getting it this year.

Yes?
You're the reason games are becoming homogenized tabloids.

It's weird to see people criticising Nintendo for taking risks in quirky concepts. This is what Nintendo is about. I remember Mario Kart sounding like a weird off shoot and that bizarre Street Fighter rip off Smash something or other. Yes we got the virtual boy, but that's what makes the company so compelling. They will always take us some where new.

Same here I was literally day dreaming about it since I played 3D World. Wish it could be said for other games in my dreams. :P

Yes?

It seams that you didn't like it. Its all good.

Jesus Christ, people are presumptuous. This reminds me of when people were actually bitching that Rayman Origins became a full retail release instead of episodic digital content.

Ah man, so glad I wasn't reading GAF back then. If ever there was a platformer whose content justified its price tag....

(Great post, BTW.)

And this is wildly off topic and for that I apologize but I didn't know where else to ask.

Did we get any word on Luigi's Mansion 2 for the Wii U?

None yet!

Haha....

When I filled out my Club Nintendo survey for Super Mario 3D World, I specifically requested a game based on Captain Toad. And I'm sure many others did as well.

Sucks you're unhappy about this, but oh well. This is bound to be another great title from EAD Tokyo.

I asked for this on Miiverse a couple times, and I am damn happy Nintendo went through with this. To me, this game just felt like it would happen though. After completing a few of the levels on 3D World, I thought that a full fledged game would be made, although I assumed it would have been an eshop only release, so having it as a retail title is a real treat. What we have seen so far looks incredible, the holiday wait will be rough.

A lot of people of those who played SM3DW asked for it actually.
It's just common to turn any Nintendo game thread to crap even when most of the time we have now idea of the stuff the whine is all about, in this case price and content.

This needs to be in the OT somewhere.

EAD Tokyo has a pretty basic pattern at this point. They have some ideas, then they make a game, then they make another game with the ideas they had that they couldn't use, then so forth. Jungle Beat begot Galaxy, which begot Galaxy 2, which begot 3D Land, which begot 3D World, which begot Captain Toad.

Unless there's some evidence that this is the time they're being told to fuck off and make this game, I'm not sure I understand the line of thinking that goes "These developers are really talented, fuck what the want to do, they should make what I deem important."

Where this come from?

Tumblr, as far as I know.

Or how someone could seriously think that "nobody asked for this," when the Miiverse posts on the related levels in 3D World were literally filled with people asking for this.

I never asked for this - but only because I never thought a dedicated Toad game would get made.

The Toad brigade in Galaxy games were adorable little cowards, full of false bravado and absurdity.

I love that their fearless leader now gets his own starring role.

Glad to see the developers not taking the safe option either. That just leads to creative... oblivion.

It isn't a minigame collection. It's a puzzle platformer, where the inability to jump, and the rotating camera combine to for challenging levels. Since you played 3D World, I don't know why you would call it as such.

Waste of resources? The game is reusing a ton of 3D world assets. If anything, it's a very efficient use of resources - creating a whole new game with parts of an old one. And Toad is a recognizable character, the game should sell ok. I don't know why that's your first concern though.

At this point, I feel like it's worth pointing out that both the Yoshi's Island series, and the Wario Land series, evolved out of mainline Mario platfromers. Both of these series are loved greatly. I would much prefer that they existed instead of a basic Mario World 2 or Mario Land 3. You may not prefer that, but I hope you can at least see why it may be a good thing to some people that Nintendo aren't just doing another 3D Mario platformer.

Right? I had the exact same reaction to Kirby and the Rainbow Curse. It's almost as if... Nintendo is listening. :O

Which makes the complainers all the more befuddling. I'm just amazed Nintendo arrived at E3 so on point considering the seeming improbability of these particular titles, and the fact that they're out this year makes it that much sweeter. I know a lot of people are griping about how everything is coming out 2015, but I'm actually more psyched about Captain Toad and Kirby than Zelda.

Captain Toad parts were a 11/10 in a 10/10 game. Great to get a full game out of them. It's one of the ideas that make you wonder why they weren't alread a standard 10 years ago. Pure puzzling bliss.

While I enjoyed the Toad levels in Super Mario 3D World, they didn't exactly stand out to me, and I certainly didn't ask for a game filled with those levels.

I was going to pass on this, but those recent pictures made it look so irresistible somehow. Maybe I'll have to reconsider.

The train picture made me want a new Paper Mario though...

So looking forward to this game as I was expecting there to be more of these levels in Super Mario 3D World.

I would be great if there was some sort of level creator with this.

Give it 30 years or so.
There are level creators in Pushmo World, Mario vs. Donkey Kong and then there will be Mario Maker, so it isn't entirely impossible. Though with it being 3D I'd expect a level creator for cube based stages like the ones in 3D World at the most.

The game isn't not even out, don't start to doubt it.

That's just show Nintendo isn't like Sony or Ms.
They do care about their games even if they're smaller titles.

That is so cool!

i have to actively distance myself from zelda. i don't think my poor heart can take the disappointment. somehow i was able to hype myself to insane levels for oot and that game surpassed my expectations. then i did it again for twilight princess, and there reached a moment where i was extremely surprised by its quality. but with this new one it sounds like everything oot was supposed to be and that idea is getting the kid in me excited again but it's still a video game so there are going to limitations and i'm an adult so i have to analyze everything and it can't be just simple fun.

but captain toad looks neat. it feels like an n64 game that was delayed a good 15 years, given that experimental puzzle games are mostly kept to handhelds these days if they release on dedicated hardware at all. i think what it reminds me of most, strangely, is klonoa.

That's a damn good gif.
I love it, it's so cute! <3

Edit: OT: I've always managed to never over hype myself for any Zelda game. All I ever expect is a fantastically designed action-adventure puzzle game, and that's what I always get. Haven't been disappointed yet, and I can't be any happier with the franchise's level of quality.

That's pretty much my situation too. Every single time i somehow have my expectations low and i'm always blown away by the finished product.
The last time was naturally ALBW and even while it was 'just a handheld game' i was shocked that i could still be pleasantly surprised by it's quality.

Now about Captain Toad. I honestly don't know what could possibly go wrong with it.
It's EAD Tokyo, it's expanding on elements introduced in SM3DW and instantly loved by the players, it brings them all on a larger scope, and just because of the level design, which is limited comparably, it will perform even better than SM3DW. I'm sure it's gonna be an amazing game.

I'm the same. I was wanting a more indepth version of the Captain Toad stuff from 3D World since before 3D World came out. It just looked to me like something that needed more of it.

I was so happy when it showed up on the Digital Event, and I still am. I was expecting a download title, but a full title is fine by me.

I've not visited this thread for a while and I'm disapointed that people are upset Nintendo is making this game and putting a good team on it. I enjoyed the Toad levels in 3DWorld and I'm excited to see what Nintendo can give us with a full title centered on those levels.

I'm always happy to see a Publisher try something new and different and this seems right up that alley. I'll definitely be picking this up!

noone is disappointed afaik :)

Hopefully nobody beat me to this as an avatar, and hopefully my leet paint skills paid the bills, and it doesn't suck.

Edit: Hm it kind of sucks. I forgot it'd resize lol. And he lost some colors what the fuck.

Woah!! WOOOOOOW!! That is amazing! Seriously just mindblowing good and cute and great and awesome and and and...wow. I love it. *-*

Edit: something with the quote went wrong and I'm on my phone and can't quote shocking albertos gif. But u all know what i'm talking about. XD

My man! When they were showing off the train level during the Treehouse stream, I actually wrote a post saying that I'd like a standalone adventure game of a similar size and scope featuring Pennington (the penguin detective). <3

This game looks awesome! The box art kinda sucks, but those screens look amazeballs. I'll get it regardless, but I am curious as to content amount and price.

judging by the book's pages, there seem to be 20 stages, hopefully it's just the first batch. Still, it's a starting point for further debate, lol
