Card Games / RPGs with Card Battle Systems

So I have a desire to play a card based computer game for some reason, not looking for an endless money sink though (so none of the ones where you purchase cards with real money or need to use physical cards to play).

To be clear I'm looking for something like the old Yu-Gi-Oh games (where you got cards as you progressed / bought them with in game currency) or something like a stand alone Arcomage or Triple Triad.

Any recommendations ?

Baten kaitos origins have a card battle system but i am not sure if it is what you really want.

Its still one of the most underrated RPG so just play it if you have access to the game and a Wii/ Game cube. Baten kaitos is good too but origins have a better and faster battle system.

Lost kingdoms by from is kind is lounge you are talking about. Also baten kaitos as well. Both are GameCube games.

Your title mentions RPGs with card based battle systems so...

- Baten Kaitos
- Baten Kaitos: Origins (JP+NA only, no European release :( )

Both are GameCube exclusive.

The first is one of my favourite games ever. Super corny voice acting though, but if you can get over that it's a very solid RPG. I haven't played Origins yet so I can't comment on that, although I heard good things about it.

Hearthstone. Yes, you can pay real money, but you don't have to. It's free, so even if you did buy a few packs, it'd still be cheaper than buying a real game. I've been playing for 2 months, and have probably spent less than $10, and could have easily have spent 0, but I like the game so I wanted to drop a few bucks.

And the Lost Kingdoms games are another. The Gamecube sure was the console for RPG/Card game hybrids. There was also that Phantasy Star Online Card Revolution game.

Baten Kaitos implements a card system to 'traditional' JRPG combat, and is really a pleasure to play.

Looking for more something where the card game is the battle system (though I wouldn't mind fancy effects when the cards are played rather than a computerized card rame) rather than an RPG battle system that uses cards (which I believe is more what Baten Kaitos is) but recommendations for those are still welcome (I actually have a bunch of GameCube games in my back log which include the Baten Kaitos games).

Was thinking about this but I'm waiting for the Android release, so I can mess around with it when I'm away from my computer.

Baten Kaitos/BK Origins and Kingdom Hearts:Chain of Memories are the two that come to mind. They aren't straight card-batteling games, but they fuse card collecting and deck building with different combat systems (BK in a more traditional style, and Chain of Memories in a more action RPG style). Having a well planned out deck is the key to success in these games.

Card Hunter is a F2P browser game that is like a single player DnD with a card battle system. I played with no money and had a good time.

If you're looking for just something like the yugioh GBA games, though, I'm not sure those exist outside of those games and the old (great) Pokemon Card games. The MegaMan BN GBA games have a deck building component, I guess.

Very hard to find, but Culdcept Saga on 360.

If you want something on Steam , look up Faeria when it comes out. That game is so good.

You could try Megaman Battle Network for a really cool spin on the card battle formula. Great music as well.

Xenogears has one. Forget the name but the object is to throw down a card one number higher than your opponent until you're out of cards

Or something like thaf

This looks awesome and pretty much exactly what I was looking for, but my 360 is an Australian one and that game never got a PAL region release.

There's a PS2 one as well, though I don't know if it was released in PAL territories either.

The Magic games released through Steam/XBLA/PSN/mobile scratch that itch pretty well too.

Culdcept for sure. Monster Monpiece on the Vita just came out and despite the aesthetic, the card battles are legit fun.

There's a game on Steam I just noticed called 100% Orange Juice that seems like a low budget Culdcept (board game style card battles).

I'll check out Faria, thanks!

100% Orange Juice isn't really Culdcept, it's a very casual dice game. Fun though, I play it on occasion. Worth picking up.

As for Faeria, don't expect it for several months, it's a small team and they're being very careful, as they believe they have to nail the Steam launch perfectly. I did do the alpha and the core gameplay is really fun.

Region isn't a problem for me for any console but the Xbox and 360. There's just never been enough titles on them in the genres I play for me to bother owning the first or getting the second modded and there's no working emulators. I probably really should get a modded 360 and import those few games before they disappear forever.

I have a pretty decent collection of NTSC Gamecube/Wii/PS2 titles that I've imported.

Play cardhunter!

it's a free browser game with some iap but you don't need to spend any money to beat the campaign

Xenosaga has a card game 'mini-game'.

IMO, it's one of the few mini-games in a JRPG to be actually enjoyable (far better than those Final Fantasy card games). And it's actually more enjoyable then the main game itself!

Once I had unlocked most of the cards, I stopped caring about the RPG, and probably put another 100 hours into the card game.

If you can find a copy of the PSX game Monster Rancher: Battle Card, you might like it. Very unique trading card game. I wish they'd make an updated version, or at least a blatant rip off.

There was also a gameboy version.

Where's my Yugioh PS Vita game ? :'(

Are they still making Yugioh games?

Seems like the market would still be there, at least on the 3DS and Vita. Kids are still watching the cartoons, after all.

And for those of you who have access to a NeoGeo Pocket, I also recommend "Card Fighter's Clash: SNK Vs. Capcom". It's been ages since I played it, but I remember it being highly addictive.

I think they are, problem is they are JPN only PSP releases.

Last I heard they brought out Yugioh Millenium but it only realeased on PS3 :/

I used to play the shit outta the yugioh games on PS but I'd really like a proper EU vita version!

For games based on physical TCGs, try the Pokémon TCG Game Boy game and Magic: Duels of the Planeswalkers. The Pokémon one is especially great.

I liked PSO Ep 3 well enough.

SNK vs Capcom Card Fighters Clash was great too. Well worth the price of a Neo Geo Pocket!

Etherlords 2 for the PC if you can find it .
The first one is a strategy game but the second one is what you are looking for.

Etherlords 2 (1 is also great but it also has turn based strategy elements). You can find it on GOG for pretty cheap.

Pokemon TCG for the gameboy

Etherlords 2 for the PC if you can find it .
The first one is a strategy game but the second one is what you are looking for.

It's available on Steam and gog.com
Thanks for the info though Might get Etherlords 2 when it goes on sale.
