I've seen Over the Garden Wall around, but I've never sat down and watchedan actual episode of the series before. Tome of the Unknown was utterly charming; I definitely have to check OtGW now.
It really surprised me how well the series came out. A really well done mini series with a lot of heart. Wish Cartoon Network would do more series like this, since it wasn't the typical style of show they do.

Action cartoons are (sadly) dead for the forseeable future. They are expensive to produce and the networks seem to hate them with the passion of 1000 hells.

Best bet? Pray IanJQ's pilot for Lakewood Plaza Turbo gets picked up. It's like DBZ...in a strip mall. It really is pretty good.

I hope it doesn't get picked up solely for the reason Ian does good work on Steven Universe :P

I've seen that pilot, wasn't really feeling it. I just really miss Young Justice. that show was so good. It deserved better.

Jammers is like if you got Beavis and Butthead, the Kanker sisters, and threw some furry in there and somehow made that combo even worse. Incredible.

ToE was of course great.

Burgess was... meh at best. It just seemed like a hodgepodge of ideas without any coherency.

Jammers felt like a distilled version of all the worst parts of CN's recent shows. The over grossness from Secret Mountain Fort Awesome, the lolrandom-ness of the worst AT/RS episodes, the bad side characters of something like Uncle Grandpa, alongside flat jokes and an overdone plot.

Forever 12 just feels like a knock-off Star VS the Forces of Evil, but could work if the villains were based more in her psyche. Nothing serious of course, but play up her fears/ dreams/wants/needs as forces to overcome.

What is it with all these crappy cartoons and their nostalgia for the 80s?

Whatever about them being crappy. But the cartoon's would usually be made by people who grew up in the 80's. A lot of older cartoons would have the same nostalgia for decades gone by from when their writers were growing up.

I actually really liked forever 12. Some of those scenes were pretty sweet. It has tons of potential.

Obviously OTGW was great. I have to sit down and watch that sometime.

So 12 forever. At first I thought it was cool. 1980's school shenaningans, some themes could be a little to similar to Regular Show, but as its some kids in school, it could feel diferent enough.
Then they went to Adventure Time Island and I lost all interest.
Then freakin' MATT BERRY appeared as a villian. Im 100% in.
More school adventures, make Matt Berry also the school principal, and im there.
The best of the new pilots bunch.

Jammers is utterly disgusting.

Bugress... I dont know. I like the cast but not the main. Although im spanish and couldnt understand the latin american guy the majority of the time, the joke is also completly lost in spanish speaking countries translations (could fly in Spain though, if they make him have a thick mexican accent, or something super exagerated like Kiko from el Chavo del 8).
The really good thing about it, even if it was a meh pilot, is that it felt different from the shows CN does now.

OTGW, I already watched and thought it was great the first time.

Its a pity theres not much like Batman TAS or Scooby Doo Mystery Inc any more. Channels need variety.

Oh Lord, 12 Forever.

Matt Berry.

I could listen to Matt Berry's voice for ever.

Same here, this is what really sold me.

What is it with all these crappy cartoons and their nostalgia for the 80s?

The creators are kids born and lived in the 80's, same as a lot of indie games creators making games that feel like nes/super nes/mega drive games. I dont know whats so hard to understand about that. We would also see more things looking like Batman TAS and the Animaniacs if the studios gave a damn about them (becuase im sure there are a bunch of cartoon creators that were big fans of those type of cartoons in their childhood), but the age of wasting a lot of money in those type of cartoons have passed and who knows if they will return.

I really liked tomb of the unknown, so cute.

The actual scenery is beautiful and the music and voice acting is great.

I'd watch that.

Tome of the Unknown is the pilot for the series Over The Garden Wall, which has already been made. I should be available on iTunes. Watch away, it's amazing!

All they have to do IMO is add more sub conscious characters rather than loladventuretime characters so that the island actually becomes interesting. Also I kind of felt when they got to the island the art just went from pretty cool looking to looking like shit except for the witch person.

I really don't feel any of them, safe for Tome of the Unknown.
The other three are too "random for the sake of randomness" for me.

EDIT: Wait, Elijah Wood was the main guy? Awesome.

None of this impress me besides the Over the Wall pilot. 'Jammers' was like a huge troll to the viewers and to CN for giving the creator money to make that troll pilot, '12 Forever' main lead is like Finn in the way she talks but with ADHD, a bit annoying honestly also the show is a bit much like Star Vs. Burgess was kinda okay but the side characters were a bit crappy.Lots of retooling needed for whatever pilot gets picked up.

They need to change the island design a lot. It looked too much like candy land adventure time style, instead of, FUCK YEAH 80's!
Im really bored of the color blops passing as secondary character dessign in this type of cartoons. Like, dont make the 80's muscleman dudes color blops FFS.

Hmm maybe take my sub conscious characters that are like the witch and give them their own islands then, that would provide a lot of variety.

The cast in the actual show is even better. Christopher Lloyd, John Cleese, Tim Curry, Melanie Lynskey, among others.

Just watched 12 Forever. Twelve herself is quite an enjoyable. Shane is necessary for that straight man stuff I guess. Art style is cool, but yeah, feels pretty random.

Twelve Forever

Jammers

Ridin' with Burgess

Tome of the Unknown (Over the Garden Wall's Pilot)

Haven't check them out yet. Hopefully they're good.

We all know Over the Garden Wall is good.

The rest is an unmitigated trainwreck. I mean, it's great that shows like Adventure Time and Regular Show inspired so many to creators to put themselves out there, but CN really shouldn't have accepted their first attempts at aping their successful properties so blatantly. Strike gold once and let the copycats flood in trying to fill the niche. It's embarrassing.

"Jammers" was undoubtedly the worst. If you're going to shamelessly ape Regular Show's aesthetic, at least make your characters visually appealing. No idea what I'm looking at when several characters have horizontal slits for pupils - it's a stylistic choice that isn't evocative of anything. On top of that it's the same kind of "lol sooooooo random" humor that only appeals to 12-year-olds and made Problem Solverz such an ordeal.

I knew I recognized that marvelous voice.

Why is it that every Cartoon these days seems to have a similar aesthetic and tone. Maybe I'm just too old and I'm gassed on 90's nostalgia, but none of this stuff hits the right notes for me.

Lots of twenty-thirty somethings sitting in the director's chair want to appeal to people who grew up when they did.

You know CN though, if something worked once, keep kicking the horse til it's dead.

You've nailed it, I mean, honestly. It all looking like it was aping The Regular Show and Adventure Time, which are the only shows of this type I genuinely enjoy. Jammers especially looked like it was trying way too hard. Yikes.

EDIT: Saw your post above and agree with the whole "oh sooo random" comedy route being boring. It's crept its way into too many cartoons over the last 3-4 years.

The worst thing about jammers is theres nothing to any of the characters beyond one trait. The susies are mean, the main girl likes gross stuff, that one guy can turn into things, and i dont know what jeremys deal is the dude felt exteaneous the whole time. Say what you will about uncle grandpa, at least you can easily get a sense of who the characters are. Even if youre inclined towards that style of humor theres nothing in jammers to latch onto.

I miss Cartoon Cartoons/Whatta Cartoon. Those showed real wit and imagination
What a cartoon still had jammers-tier clunkers from time to time, i cant think of a pilots focused show that didnt have misses.

12 and Over the Garden were the best among the 4. Jammers was just indecent and creep where Burgess was insufferable. The characters really suck, the accents annoyed me, Burgess annoyed me. It's like a over exaggerated Regular Show. Regular Show is much better in my opinion.

Easily my favorite piece of media from last year. It's funny and sad and deeply human. Every bit of it is on point, and it's short enough to not overstay it's welcome. Well worth your time.
