Cartoon Network or Nickelodeon (90s - early 2000's)

At the time, I preferred Nick. Now, it's Cartoon Network. I've found that the Cartoon Cartoons up to about 2000-2001 hold up quite a bit more than the Nicktoons do, especially everything after Rocko. Johnny Bravo, Dexter's Lab, PPG, Courage, EEnE, Cow and Chicken/I Am Weasel are all excellent shows and are better than every Nicktoon from the same era(1996 on), except maybe Hey Arnold!.

Kids WB
Pokemon
Batman
Superman
Static Shock
Justice League and/or Justice League Unlimited
Animaniacs
Tiny Toons
Pinky & the Brain
Men in Black
Several of these, including Animaniacs, Batman, and Tiny Toons first aired on Fox Kids. Tiny Toons actually started off in syndication(as well as Pokemon), and actually only ended up on Kids WB after the show was out of production(the last couple of seasons plus the two specials aired on Fox).
Whichever channel had the following in the 90s
Ducktales
Talespin
Aladdin
Chip & Dale Rescue Rangers
Goof Troop
Marsupalami (sp?)
Moat of these originated in syndication.

Cartoon Network all the way. It had Ed, Edd n Eddy, Courage the Cowardly Dog, Dexter's Laboratory, Dragonball and DBZ, Gundam Wing, Home Movies, Pinky And The Brain, Samurai Jack, Battle B-Daman, Batman of the Future and fucking Batman The Animated Series. Tenchi Muyo, Outlaw Star and The Big O

Man I miss the old days. CN still has some cool stuff like Adventure Time, Regular Show and even Flapjack was pretty cool. But dat Toonami block we used to get. Dat anime. My mum used to complain about the cartoons I watched back in the days but I bet she'd rather watch the stuff listed above then the stuff on now that my little brother watches.

Always get nostalgic and watch the old promo's we used to get. RIP CN and Toonami.

nickelodeon runs away with it for the adventures of pete and pete and hey arnold. cartoon network may have had a lot of good shows, but i can't think of any classics like those. i'd also say rocko's modern life and the first three seasons of spongebob squarepants were of a quality unmatched by cartoon network until adventure time.

Nick in the 90s
followed by Cartoon Network through today.

Nick never got any of its cool back except for Spongebob

avatar the last airbender mang. that was good stuff. apparently the new turtles show is pretty good too. i only watched a few episodes and it was all right.

Pretty neck and neck but Nick came out on top for me. Between Aaah Real Monsters, Ren & Stimpy, Rugrats, Hey Arnold, Doug, Rocko's Modern Life it was tough to beat. Dexter's Lab (og version is awesome though.)

i never watched it.

i'm actually surprised that Nick animated that in-house, upon looking it up. I always figured it was some second-run dubbing of some anime thing.

same with the turtles show, never watched it. Cartoon Network has too many good cartoons over the years. Love Cow and Chicken (it was like a new Ren and Stimpy). Ed, Edd, n' Eddy grew on me a lot. Dexter's Lab, Johnny Bravo (even the newer seasons when they brought it back)...

Regular Show/Adventure Time/Uncle Grandpa are my current favorites. I think the Scooby Doo stuff they're doing now is great too, but i haven't seen too much of it

Nick started out on top but the Cartoon Network slowly usurped the throne.

Pretty much this. The more shows with "real people" that Nick put on (and they came pretty quickly), the worse it got.

Of course, Cartoon Network ended up filling itself with Anime and other stuff and went downhill not too long after.

Cartoonnetwork, easily.

In the 90's was CN's biggest shining point. It was the time of it's most popular shows like Johnny Bravo, Powerpuff Girls, Ed Edd n Eddy, and Courage The Cowardly Dog. It was also the launch of Toonami, which showed DBZ, Tenchi Muyo, and Gundam.

Nickelodeon had a good time during the 90's as well. It introduced shows like Spongebob Squarepants (which during the 90's was the biggest thing ever), Doug, and Rugrats. It also had a pretty great live action lineup such as Kenan and Kel, and the Amanda Show. I didn't really enjoy most of the 90's for Nick.

I did like Spongebob, Kenan and Kel, and Hey Arnold. Nothing could beat DBZ, Ed Edd n Eddy, or Johnny Bravo for me. DBZ was pretty huge just like Spongebob was for Nick.

So I liked CN more in the past.

Spongebob wasn't even big until at least 2000. I watched the show starting with it's premier in the summer of '99, and when I went back to school in the fall nobody was watching it. It wasn't until a year or so later that it really caught on.

i feel like you're misremembering. Spongebob wasn't even on until 99, so i dont know how it could be the biggest thing "during the 90s"

The Amanda Show also started in late 99.

I know it was on in 99, also that it wasn't a premiere hit. I'm just saying that the shows premiered in the 90's is all, so Nick was heading in the right direction with them. It took a year for those 2 to grab an audience like they did (I'm not sure if Amanda Show was popular, but I remember lots of people talking about it), but when they did it was pretty great for Nick.

I'm almost surprised people USED to like Doug but don't anymore, I had always disliked the show and mainly only watched because it was a cartoon, even though I preferred the other Nicktoons readily.

Anyways, I feel that it was Nickelodeon initially, then by the end Cartoon Network, but I was growing up then and was really getting into anime by the end of the 90s, nevermind that I don't think CN was even around in the early 90s. If it was I didn't have it on the cable we got until 97 or 98 anyway.

This thread is weird and you guys are hating on staples of my childhood that still hold up really well.

Early to mid 90s nick was pretty unbeatable

Their live action was unmatched (Pete and Pete is a really good show, even now. I'd say it was ahead of its time.) Not sure I saw are you afraid of the dark mentioned yet, but shame on y'all

Their cartoons were also stellar. CN probably took over as the 90s wrapped up, but by then I was a teen and didnt care

Not enough Ren and Stimpy in this thread.

I'd have to go with Nick but both were pretty great.

I want to put this on my wall.

Porque no las dos?Seriously, both channels had their shows and genres to offer and they were unique to each channel. Its no use in me trying to decide. I'm happy and very lucky to be able to say that I liked both and combined, TV couldn't have been more entertaining.

Nickelodeon by a country mile.

Doug
Rugrats
Pete and Pete
Rockos Mordern Life
All That
Keenen and Kel
Ren and Stimpy
The Secret World of Alex Mack
Real Monsters

And I'm probably missing about 20 great shows.

edit:

Clarissa Explains It All
Are You Afraid of The Dark
Round House

this is true. I distinctly remember watching Batman and Tiny Toons and the episode of Tiny Toons featuring Batman

Nick then Cartoon Network then Nick again with a bit of Cartoon Network...
(90s)-------(up to mid 00s)----------(late 00s to now)-----

i never watched it.

it looks like some sort of bad crappy american version of anime at a glance (there were a lot of lesser shows with that style around the same time) but holy god it's a fantastic show. i mean that as in it's a good show for anyone, not just kids. i highly recommend it.

When I was a little kid (before the age of 12), I preferred Nickelodeon, as there was no Cartoon Network yet.

But as soon as CN launched in 1992, I was already grown out of Nick and fully embraced that channel up until the early 00's or so.

Yea Nick had a strong grip on the cartoon game back then. Rugrats,Rocko, and Ren and Stimpy were killing it in the 90's

CN tho kind of had a strong period between 2000-03.

here is the definitive list of the war between cartoon network and nickelodeon. i am not counting toonami, adult swim or nick at nite shows here, and im only counting things that were original and not re-broadcasted from nippon:

cn of the last 5 years or so >>>>>> early/mid 90's nick >>> late 90's/early 00's cn >>>>>>> late 90's/early 00's nick >>> nick of the last 5 years or so

and here is all the good crap from those years

modern-ish CN-ish:

Adventure Time
Regular Show
The Amazing World of Gumball
The Marvelous Misadventures of Flapjack
Chowder
Sym-Bionic Titan
Young Justice
Robotomy
Steven Universe
The Secret Saturdays
Star Wars: The Clone Wars
Scooby Doo: Mystery Incorporated

a lot of it being some of the best children's shows ever

early/mid 90's Nick:

The Adventure of Pete & Pete
Clarissa Explains It All
Rugrats
Doug
Are You Afraid of the Dark?
All That
Kenan & Kel
Ahhhhh Real Monsters
Rocko's Modern Life
Ren & Stimpy
Hey Arnold!

all good shit, many of them classics

late 90's/early 00's CN:

Dexter's Laboratory
Powerpuff Girls
Space Ghost Coast to Coast / Cartoon Planet
Courage the Cowardly Dog
Johnny Bravo
Ed, Edd, n Eddy
Samurai Jack
Whatever Happened to Robot Jones
Sheep in the Big City

a very good group of shows, some classics

late 90's/early 00's Nick:

Rugrats (still)
Hey Arnold! (still)
As Told by Ginger
The Wild Thornberries
Spongebob Squarepants
Invader Zim
The Fairly Oddparents
The Angry Beavers
Pelswick
Kenan & Kel (still)
KaBlam!

a pretty good group of shows, a letter grade or so below CN at the same time though

Modern-ish Nick-ish:

Avatar: The Last Airbender
The Legend of Korra
Spongebob Squarepants (still)
The Fairly Oddparents (still)
Sanjay & Craig
The Mighty B!

the only things worth watching here is the two avatars and sanjay & craig, with the mighty b mayyyybe being worthwhile

this is all factual evidence no one can disagree with this

Does anyone else here remember O! Canada! ? Pretty sure I only saw it a few times as a kid but I sure remember it.

Have to say, I watched mostly Cartoon Network, but Nick had its choice shows I had to watch.

I was a Nickelodeon kid in the 90's. Nick had Rugrats, Real Monsters, Doug and Rocko's Modern life. Nick also had great live action shows like Alex Mack, Clarissa explains it all, Are You Afraid of the Dark and Tales of the Hidden Temple. At that time Cartoon Network only had Scooby Doo and Looney Tunes to compete against that.

Cartoon Network ruled the early 2000s, though. The power started to shift once they started showing DBZ and other shows like Johnny Bravo, Ed Edd n' Eddy and Courage the Cowardly Dog.

Edit: Can't believe I forgot about Hey Arnold. Hey Arnold is easily the best cartoon Nick has ever aired.

Cartoon Network had Adult Swim, which gave us Home Movies (although that might have been early 2000). Home Movies dwarf even Hey Arnold!

Such a fantastic fucking show.

I enjoyed Nickelodeon in the 90s but Cartoon Network still could not be beat for cartoons. Dexter's Lab and Johnny Bravo are still 2 of my favorite animated shows. And believe it or not, Cartoon Network actually is still pretty good despite how much people shit on them.

Regular Show is the shit and I know a lot of people like Adventure Time.

My favorite CN shows were:

1. Dexter's Lab
2. Regular Show
3. Johnny Bravo
4. Foster's Home
5. Courage the Cowardly Dog

Oh and yeah, of course Adult Swim and the OG Hannah Barbera stuff I used to watch as an even younger kid.

Now, I feel like Nickelodeon was the best with live action shows.
Keenan and Kel, OG All That, and Cousin Skeeter were all the shit!

Back in the day Nickelodeon definitely had more shows that stood the test of time, but at the time I would have sided with cartoon network because I used to love the toonami block.

But in more recent years Adventure Time and Venture Bros. blow everything away IMO.

Nick. No contest.

Rewatched Salute your shorts recently. Still pretty good for early 90's cheese. Pinsky sucks, but god damn season 2 has some good moments.

I remember liking Hey dude as a kid, but the thought of revisiting it now sounds boring as hell.

I'll always pick Nick for Ren & Stimpy and Rocko, for some reason I blame Nick Cannon for the fall of All That and Nickelodeon.

Nick for me, not even close either. I disliked most of the Cartoon Network shows.
