CA's freeway system is crumbling, AKA, I hate the 405.

As someone who's relied on 95 and 495 for a few years now, how do those compare? Because I can't imagine being on anything worse than 95 on a Friday and not wanting to murder myself.

If your talking about the DC area since the interstate numbers you listed match it's typically worse here than LA. One study I recently saw showed we sit in traffic about 2 hours more than residents in LA per year.

People forget all the commuters in the NE cities that are in close proximity coming through DC especially on weekends. It's like the gateway to the north and south and the major cities going north are pretty close to each other. DC and Baltimore beltway's are not separated by much and they have studied adding a second beltway in DC. Friday's are rough since so many non local people are mixed in with regular rush hour traffic thats already bad on 95.

I was in San Diego recently and traffic actually moved. Sure there was traffic but it frequently moved and the roads were super smooth and not in bad shape at all. The roads in DC and Baltimore area are shit at the moment and winter time is only going to make them worse.. Do you even get Potholes in CA with all that mellow weather?

Glad I'm a Stonecutter.

We passed Measure M. Wich is more metro lines, and a push forward to more public transport. The new lines are a hit, even though the construction was highly criticized.
Tabris was a douche who thinks everyone should live in luxury high rises, and stuff like backyards, and kid-friendly communities, so parks, playgrounds, etc. should be abolished all in the name of space saving. Doing that in LA would be a nightmare and would absolutely kill the neighborhoods which make LA, LA.

Tabris wasn't even making that much and would spend like more than a third of his income to just appear nouveau riche.
What, really? What was he doing to save money then? Eating ramen packets everyday?

Yea coming from Baltimore the roads in CA (Bay Area at least) are fucking clouds on earth compared to the shitstain roads of Maryland

But Florida roads though are smoother than butter

Whoa, are you me? I live in the Baltimore area and the roads are terrible, but when I visit the Bay Area the roads are like heaven, so smooth.

Though I do feel like they're pretty well laid out here. My only beef is that it's kind of a pain for me to get to the West Side quickly (Los Feliz).

I live in Los Feliz, learning to ride and buying a motorcycle is a life hack.

California sounds like a pretty shit place at the moment. All I hear about is insane housing prices, bums shitting on sidewalks, all the trees dying and now roads in disrepair.
I drive this everyday. California is an amazing place to live.

I commute from LB to Costa Mesa and if I didn't get to set my own hours I'd commit seppuku. Going in at 6 and out by 3 let's me avoid most of that shit. It still sucks though

I always wondered this about traffic and rush hour. Are the people stuck in traffic regulars or someone just caught in a bad traffic? Like do some people just say fuck it and wade through shitty traffic day in and day out? I would die at the thought of doing so. Whenever I get caught in a crawl, it is usually unplanned. I never make it a point to make it through the shittyness of a slow moving traffic.

Yes. Traffic is a part of life in Southern California. Even on the weekends.

A friend of mine does that, it takes her like 45min on the carpool lane.

Come down to LA for a week.

Pretend you have work, and head on the 405 or 5 or any freeway at 7-10am or 3-8pm. It's just life.

SD is a lot different than OC or LA. Yeah, the traffic can be bad at times, but it's nothing like those other counties. I work downtown SD and I never really have that much problem. However, I don't go during rush hour so that helps.

I lived in the central valley most of my life but now live in Humboldt county, and man it's like heaven. All the freeway up there is smoothly paved, must be because its less traffic.

Yeah, even as a non-Californian, I try to avoid rush-hour traffic times (8A/5P) as much as I can to avoid stop-and-go traffic.

I seriously don't know how LA can fix it's traffic issues, though. I do think Tabris has a point in that a bunch of cities/towns need to restructure their sprawl and repurpose old/dead places. Not necessarily high-rises, but maybe 3-5 story buildings so locals have stores and services in a short-walk/bike area.

Though, I'm thinking the problem with that (and that includes LA) would be the burder of semi's having to traffic to way more stores and impacting the roads due to their weight. Not sure of the cost/benefit ratio on that.

California can do like Georgia and tax hybrid/electric vehicles. At first it feels like BS. But then again, they are getting the benefits of the road while paying little to nothing to maintain the roads because there is less gas tax being collected.

Sure it would not solve everything, but it's probably something that has to be at least considered.

im pretty sure people already pay taxes on the electric bill so now the solution is to add another layer? fuck that.

So you punish people who are making a difference in our environment with higher taxes?

There is a reason electric and hybrid cars get a tax kickback.

Fuck that. We should be encouraging people to drive them.
If anything tax commercial vehicles. They tear the shit out of our roads for far more benefit to the owners.

But either way, more usage equals more wear. Doesn't matter if the vehicle is hybrid, electric, or conventional ICE.

Like I said, it sucks. I would like to see increased taxes go towards building out competent mass transit options - long distance, regional, and local rail, though. But I feel that would get even less support because USA.

Edit: Taxes from the electric company do not go towards roads. Cars and other vehicle wear down roads directly.

they should jack up the taxes on vehicles with V6+ engines and look to other areas of possible funding before they put the burden on electric vehicles.

What are the taxes on the electric bill? There is an energy resources surcharge but that is used for energy programs (not transportation related).

The vehicles with gas-guzzling engines already pay more for road repair because they buy more gas and each gallon of gas pays 30 cents + 2.25% to fund transportation.

The majority of funding for transportation comes from gas taxes. If all cars are switched to electric vehicles, where should the funding come from? They could switch to implementing tolls, which would do the same thing as taxing electric cars.

Those type of engines/vehicles use more gas and thus pay more in taxes. While electric vehicles are a great positive, they're still physically on the road. And therefore is still causing ware on the infrastructure.

And even in the most popular of car segments like compacts and subcompacts, they're more efficient than ever. So even in non-electric/hybrid vehicles, gas tax revenues are likely going down.
